Aby-a-Day – Day 210 of 365

I’m really not sure why, but for some reason when Jacoby rides the T, he gets the uncontrollable urge to lick his chops.

It even hits him before he actually gets on the train!

  1. I don’t think that’s it…he seems to be fine otherwise. Cats licking their lips may indicate anxiety or anticipation depending on what is happening, so I think that’s what’s happening in Jake’s case: he knows that when he’s on the T, he’s going someplace new and different, so he’s excited. He also knows that the train isn’t the end of whatever we’re doing – it’s just a step towards it.

It’s funny how they learn what things mean and do. He knows the subway takes him places, and he knows when the train comes and what the doors opening and closing mean. He understands the elevator, too. Cats learn by observation, so when he comes along with me, he sees how things work and learns things like, when the voice on the train says, “Next stop, Broadway,” and my posture and body language changes from relaxed to anticipatory, we’re going to be doing something; over time, he learns that when the voice says “Broadway,” we’re going home.

It’s funny if I decide to go to another station and we stay on the train through Broadway station; he gets agitated and meows and looks from me to the door. He knows it’s “wrong” not to get off at “our” stop and he’s trying to figure out why we’re not following our usual routine.
