Aby-a-Day – Day 216 of 365

During my half of the Pet Partner training, one thing that was recommended as a great way to train Jacoby to be a therapy cat was to take him to places like Petco and Petsmart and just wander around and interact with people and other animals. So we’ve been doing that, and it’s a ton of fun.

Our first “official” Petco practice run was to the store in Quincy, because it’s the easiest to get to on the T.

Jacoby had to check out the cat food selection first.

That’s a lot of food for a little cat!

Then we checked out the cat beds. Someone had left a bunch of them on the floor.

Of course, Jake needed to check out the fresh cat beds.

Let it never be said that Jake isn’t in touch with this feminine side.

After the cat beds, we moved on to the cat trees…

…which, of course, Jake also had to thoroughly test.

Finally, we went full circle and looked at the cat treats mice. While we were there, we met some children; one little boy who was about 3 years old built a little wall around Jake using the little tubs of loose cat toys. I was filming video at the time, and I haven’t had a chance to edit it yet, but it was really cute.

Every time we go out together, we have an interesting time. He enjoys it as much as I do.

  1. Training! Let me tell you about training! I am so excited.

My husband was on the toilet this morning and Louis was there observing. After my husband finished, Louis hopped up on the toilet and went pee! Totally unprompted, no training, not even an inkling from us that this is something we wanted him to do. Isn’t that amazing? I need to figure out a way to keep this going, because I would give my right arm to get rid of the litterbox.

I need to do what you are doing with Jake – Louis needs some adventure.

    1. OMG that is so awesome! I am so envious. I want to try the Litter Kwitter, but I don’t think all four cats would use it; Jake definitely, but I’m not sure which of the girls would be that adaptable. It’s hard to tell…Angel might, but she’s still so skittish and scared of the bathroom (thank you for that, Miss Kylie!)

Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, in her book Tribe of Tiger, tells the story of Ruby, a leashed domesticated cougar in who, on the way to a lecture in a school, insists on going into first the ladies’ room and then into a stall. Thomas thought the cat was thirsty and wanted to drink from the toilet…but no, she wanted to pee! Cats learn by observation (as I so often say), and they know what we’re doing when we go to the bathroom – and StarClan knows they watch us going to the bathroom often enough! I think most of them just prefer to use their boxes, and must think we’re retarded for using water for our litterbox, but a few must see the advantages in doing it the way we do.

See if you can get a photo, if he does it again – I would love to see it (and show it to Jake LOL)!
