Congratulations to Cat Scout of the Week Wren!

Speaking of Cat Scouts, Abyfriend Wren is the Cat Scout of the week!

Congratulations, Wren! We need more Abys in the Cat Scouts!

Aby-a-Day – November 17: The Cat Scouts Cardwood Derby

The Cat Scouts is having their very first event – the Cardwood Derby! Each Cat Scout has to build their own Cardwood Derby race car. There were some rules, of course, such as at least 80% of the car must be constructed from a cardboard box, a video of the Cat Scout showing off your driving skills scores extra points, kits are not expressly prohibited, but since the entries will be judged on originality and craftsmanship, they will likely decrease the chances of winning, and the car need not roll, per se.

So, since kits were allowed – and the car didn’t necessarily have to be a car, Angel entered the fighter plane.

Like any good pilot, she examined her craft before takeoff.

It’s important to make sure everything is in good working order while you’re still on the ground.

Granted, Angel’s entry in the Cardwood Derby wasn’t made from scratch…but it is the only plane entered.

Jacoby, of course, wanted his car built from scratch. He picked out the main box himself.

And he also wanted it to really roll.

But the only wheels I could find were kind of bulky. I couldn’t really do much to incorporate them into a sleek-looking race car.

It’s actually more of a tank.

But it’s Boston Strong!

And Jake liked it, which is the most important thing.

When it was all finished, we took it out to the hallway to let her go.

I attached Jake’s leash to the front and we ran it up and down the long carpeted corridor.

Jake’s car was a bit wobbly, but it worked.

We even ran into a neighbour while we were racing.

She was very impressed with Jake’s car…and his Scouts uniform.

Check out Jake’s car in action! I don’t know who will win – there are some truly awesome entries – but it was a lot of fun. Building a Cardwood car isn’t as easy as it looks!

Aby-a-Day – November 16: “Neat” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Neat.”

Jacoby is a very neat cat.

And by “neat,” I don’t mean “cool” or “awesome,” I mean “tidy.”

Two kitties in our family, who shall remain nameless (*cough*Angel*cough*Tessie*cough*) do not bury their business after using the litter box. Then, when Jake comes along to use it, he has to clean up after them!

Both before he even goes in, and then before he can use it himself once he’s in there.

It drives him nuts, too, you can just tell by the look on his face.

“Seriously, you guys? You can’t just bury that yourselves? Really?”

Unfortunately, Jake’s fastidiousness doesn’t carry over into the kitchen. SOMEONE knocked over this dispenser filled with the delicious meat powder we sprinkle on the cats’ food. We don’t actually know who this SOMEONE was, but a certain boycat in our house refused to let me take his photo with the spillage…and he never refuses to let me take his photo! He was also suspiciously not hungry the rest of the day…

Aby-a-Day – November 15: Gun-Hee in the kitchen (Friday Flashback)

We used to call Gun-Hee the KMD…”Kitten of Mass Distruction.”

That’s because he did things like this. See that rice pot? It’s meant to be on the kitchen counter, not hanging upside-down by its cord!

At least the inner pot that holds the rice landed upright!

And there was absolutely no question who was responsible for this mayhem.

Gun-Hee was so proud of himself! Just look at him! He’s petting himself on that stepstool while he basks in the glory of his mess. Jacoby has knocked his share of things off of that same kitchen counter…but he’s never done this!

(This was discovered first thing in the morning on 27 September 2007)

Abys in Need: Juniper in Brooklyn, NY

The listing says he’s an “Abyssinian mix” but he looks all Aby to me. He also looks young

“Animal ID : 21436207
Breed : Abyssinian/Mix
Age : 1 year
Gender : Male
Color : Taupe
Spayed/Neutered : Yes
Declawed : No”

Juniper is at A Tail at a Time, a no-kill shelter on 238 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, NY. They are “committed to finding permanent, loving, safe homes for domesticated animals that have either been abandoned on the streets of New York City or who end up in the New York City animal shelters (ACC). We are a no-kill rescue organization that believes that a domesticated animal living outside is not safe and deserves the warmth and comfort of a its own home. Animals that reside in the city animal shelters deserve the right to live out their natural life expectancy. We initially place the animals in foster homes or in adoption centers while we find loving adoptive homes for them. We also engage in activities that strive to educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets and in the humane treatment of animals. While we don’t believe in anthropomorphizing animals, we have observed that they are capable of experiencing grief, loss and depression when abandoned.”

If you are interested in adopting Juniper, you can call them at (347) 683-1221 or email them at

Other People’s Abys: Vote for Frodo!

AbyFriend Bernd posted this ADORABLE photo of little Frodo and he needs your vote…I’m not sure what he wins, because the website is in German, but cute is panlingual! (The voting button is the one with the heart that says “Abstimmen.”)

“Sie ist die süßeste Versuchung der Welt. Wer kann diesem Blick schon wiederstehen??”
(She is the sweetest temptations of the world. Who can resist this view already?)

It says “Freya” on the website, but the photo is actually of her brother Frodo.

Aby-a-Day – November 14: Cat houses

The first time we went to Sturbridge, it was during a blizzard. We noticed this little New England village on the hotel grounds, but it looked liked this:

So when we went back for the NEMO show last month, Jacoby and I just had to explore the little village.

It’s actually a miniature golf course, but I don’t think it’s used very much for golfing.

The little houses were just so adorably cat-sized!

Jake had a great time checking out all the windows on this white house.

He really wanted to go inside this brown house!

He also liked sitting on the houses.

Aby-a-Day – November 12: “A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid” (Cartoon Tuesday)

All cats like boxes. That’s a pretty established fact, just ask the internet.

But while normal cats do things, well…normally…Abys always take it up a notch.

Aby-a-Day – November 11: In Flander’s Field (Hipstamatic Monday)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae, 1915

Aby-a-Day – November 10: Two sides of the same stump

Sometimes you just see something, and you instantly think “Ooohh…I have GOT to take photos of that!”

So, when we were on our way to our hotel room at the NEMO show last month in Sturbridge, I couldn’t wait to get some photos of Jacoby on this big tree stump.

And Jake being Jake, he was perfectly willing to oblige me and pose on it.

It was a gorgeous autumn afternoon.

And it was a wonderfully huge tree stump.

And Jake was pleased as punch to be up on top of that big stump, too.

“I am ABY!”

“Hear me ROAR!”

My dad always told me not to shoot photos into the sun, but sometimes, it works to your advantage and gives you some dramatic shots.

You know, the “pensive looking into the distance” kind of shot.

Jake’s really good at that.

I think he was really enjoying that tree stump. When he was on it, he was taller than I am, and cats always love to be as high as they can be. Plus, he’s always happy when he’s getting his photo taken…no matter where we are.

Aby-a-Day – November 9: “Sale” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Sale.”

I found this cute little dress with a plaid skirt on sale at Petco a while back.

Not only was it on sale – for only a dollar! – but it was actually designed for cats! I’m not sure which impressed me most, the fact that it was only a buck or the fact that it was actually meant to be worn by a feline.

I know they always say that redheads shouldn’t wear red, but don’t you think it suits Angel?

She seems to really like it.

She definitely seems to know how cute she is in it!

You would think that bratty little brothers would respect other people’s photo shoots, wouldn’t you?

Aby-a-Day – November 8: The last time the Red Sox won the World Series… (Friday Flashback)

Everyone compares the most recent Red Sox World Series win to their 2004 victory, but nobody seems to talk about the 2007 World Series. That was Gun-Hee’s World Series.

Gun-Hee loved watching baseball on television, and I think he got more interested in the playoffs because we were so interested in them.

He decided to get a closer look during the first inning of Game 1.

Gun-Hee knows where the ball is!

Not Big Papi’s best side.

Getting up-close and personal with Dice-K.

There’s only one October!

He got interested again after the Red Sox won the World Series on Sunday night…

Posing with the starting pitchers.

He seemed to be rather taken with Papelbon.

Even though Paps wasn’t dancing this time!

This was, you may recall, the series where Jacoby Ellsbury was the first player to steal a base and won everyone in the States a free Taco Bell taco…this may also have been the genesis of “Jacoby” as a name for an Aby.

Aby-a-Day – November 7: Just chillin’

It seems like the last week or so has been super busy, with therapy visits, Halloween and the whole Red Sox thing…

…time to just take a few moments and relax.

Abys are Everywhere: The internet is made of cats…

So there I am, minding my own business, and all of a sudden this appears in my Facebook notifications:

He was posted on the Abyssinian Cat Club on Facebook, apparently as publicity for a Latvian flight school. But look at him with his captain’s hat! He smiles and poses just like Jacoby!!

I mean, seriously…look at them!

But then I check my email, and I’ve got a message from Kickstarter

…with this familiar Icelandic Aby:

I swear, they’re everywhere! And they’re all wearing clothes and smiling!

Aby-a-Day – November 6: Wordless Wednesday (Therapy)

Abys are Everywhere: Blanket ID’s Member of the Month

Guess who is Blanket ID‘s member of the month for November?

Yep! None other than our very own Jacoby! He will grace Blanket ID’s Facebook page all this month!

If you have been following my blog for any length of time, you know I love Blanket ID’s tags. All of our cats have them, along with their microchips. They also make wonderful holiday gifts (because you know what comes after November), especially when paired with one of HiTide Creations’ collars.

Hurrah for Jake!

Aby-a-Day – November 5: “In the catbird seat” (Cartoon Tuesday)

Did you seriously think I would let the World Series happen and NOT do a cartoon about it?

All the photos in this cartoon were taken by me: Wally at Fenway, Fenway Park at sunset (from the Budweiser right field roof deck) and the confetti and the sign from the parade. And yeah, I’ve been waiting a while to use that photo of Wally.
(Click cartoon to embiggen, or you can view all cartoons in Slideshow mode on Flickr.)

Aby-a-Day – November 4: Dona Nobis Pacem (Hipstamatic Monday)

“If there were to be a universal sound depicting peace, I would surely vote for the purr” ~ Barbara L. Diamond

Here’s how you can participate in the annual blog blast for peace.

Abys are Everywhere – Kara the Aby who loved a bunny

Found this adorable story via the Abyssinian Cat Club on Facebook:

Rescue Cat Finds Friendship With Rescue Rabbit

“When Kara a rescue Abyssinian cat met Melba an unwanted rabbit who had had a hard time finding a permanent home, the cat took to the rabbit and offered some love and snuggles. It was then, they became each other’s best friend.
“They both came unwanted from previous owners. The rabbit had been adopted and returned multiple times; she wasn’t litter box trained so that could have been related. Within a week she was trained.

The Aby had open sores from scratching due to food allergies that her previous owner didn’t brother to deal with. The matter was quickly addressed,” said Liz H.
“During the early months of 2011 out of the corner of my eye I started to see Kara and Melba with their heads nestled together but as soon as I would turn my head to look, they’d move away from each other. It kept happening and they were very guarded about letting me observe them.

One day after seeing them together one second and apart the next, I sat down and had a talk with them and told them I knew they were friends and that it was okay. I’m sure they didn’t understand a word I said and it was probably just a coincidence that they slowly started being more open about their friendship,” Liz added.
They were both older adoptions and adopted separately. When they found each other, it didn’t matter what they are, friendship has no boundaries.”

Sadly, Kara passed away on 29 July 2013. She was 11 years old, and her friend Melba was there at the end.

Melba misses Kara…but at least she has other Abys, like Rudy, who also love to cuddle with her!

(There are many, many more photos of Melba with her Aby friends Kara, Rudy and Sunny – and other cats and bunnies, too – on Liz H’s Flickr.)
