Whilst Sweden celebrates two weeks later, today is Mother’s day in North America. To celebrate, here is everyone with their mother. First we have Alfred with his brother Bertil with their mother, S*Truly Cosmic Nailah.
Here we have Lorelai with her brothers and sister and their mother, S*Primuz-Zezam Kajza.
Here is Logan with his Boston-born mum, Sopan Naina-of-Melur.
Here is Izaak being taught to scratch properly by his mum in Poland, Angelina Minimali*PL.
Jacoby, his sister and brother, and their mother, Instincts Catalina of Pellburn.
And finally, one of my favourite family photos of all time…Gun-Hee with his brother and sisters and their mom, Marica’s Bright Amber of Pellburn. I am grateful to the breeders who took all the above photos except the one of Freddy and his mum…it means so much to be able to see them with their littermates when you can’t always see them all together in person. I wish I had a kitten photo of Angel…with her mother or without. But at least I think I know who Angel’s mother is, so that’s something.
As I have posted before, Lorelai loves to climb trees.
Unlike Izaak, she can actually shimmy up the on her own without human intervention.
She also seems to feel very comfortable in trees. She routinely naps on the top of our floor-to-ceiling indoor cat tree, and she walks up the side of it without a second thought, so that makes sense.
Not only does she feel at home in the branches…
…she seems quite eager to see if she can go higher!
Oh, wait…what does she see now?
You may remember last year when I bundled everyone up in the Strollercat stroller and got professional photos taken of everybody. Well, they had another photo shoot last month, so I took everyone back in for another round of photos.
I mainly wanted to get photos of Angel and Alfred, because they don’t go to shows, and we don’t have as many opportunities to have them photographed. Angel actually did really well, considering she doesn’t get out much.
Lorelai, of course, is a natural.
She’s been getting professional photos taken since she was 11 weeks old!
Still, even a seasoned poser can take an slightly awkward photo every once in a while.
Izaak is pretty good at the posing thing, too.
*Sigh* At least, when he isn’t throwing the Singapura Stink-Eye around.
And then there’s Freddy. He is an excellent poser.
Except…when he isn’t. It’s really hit or miss with this silly boy! Still, I would rather have goofy photos of them than no photos at all. It’s funny…the last time we got the photos done, we had just four cats (because Zak hadn’t joined us yet)…and this time, we also had only four cats. SOMEday I hope we’ll be able to a photo of the whole family of five.
Unlike Lorelai, Izaak doesn’t seem to be able to climb trees on his own. He tries…oh, how he tries. He runs up to the trees at full speed, but where Rory uses that momentum to go up the side of the tree…Zak just stops short.
So, I decided to help him out.
I put Zak up in the tree.
He really loved being in the tree. It was as if his every wish had been granted.
He may not be able to get up in the tree on his own…but once he’s up there, he knows what to do.
Second: Try to climb higher.
Third: Pose some more.
In case you were worried, Zak wasn’t that high up…and Björn and I were right there in case anything went sideways.
Yesterday, not even a month after Jacoby died just before his tenth birthday, Molly posted this on Facebook: “He’s gone, my beloved Mosey. Sweetest cat in 30+ years of Abys. Damn kidney disease! At age eight, one sad Vet, two crying Vet Techs and I walked him to the Rainbow Bridge. Lisa Kaelin I owe you the world for breeding my favorite cat of all time. Farewell, Ch. Red Fern Moses2 of Tigerflower. It hurts so much…”
Longtime readers may remember that Jake and I met Rosey Mosey at a cat show when he was a kitten. At the time, he was third best kitten in CFA! We also met Mosey’s son, Nikolai, at another show.
Mosey was such a sweet, lovable boy. I can’t believe he is also gone so young. My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend has stopped running today. Sleep well in Tuonela, dear, sweet Mosey.
Yesterday, I got the loveliest condolence card from Meg. The cover was a cat in stars…
…and the inside was just as lovely.
Jacoby and Taz were a team. We showed together, shared hotel rooms, and travelled all over the Northeast. Meg and I said that if they portrayed by human actors, Taz would be Ryan Seacrest, and Jake would be Ice T.
I did a few cartoons of the two of them together, as you may remember, but my favourite drawing of them that I did was this one, with Jake as Psy and Taz as the Elevator Guy in the Gangnam Style video.
I really miss those days.
Just another average day Chez Hellqvist. As usual, I woke up with at least one cat on me.
Lorelai hung out in her favourite spot.
She loves to be on the top of the floor-to-ceiling cat tree.
Angel spent most of the afternoon in her brown cave bed.
I don’t think a day goes by that she doesn’t nap in there.
Alfred spent most of the day doing what he does best…
—looking for food. I swear, it’s like having a raccoon in the house!
Freddy! Get out of the cabinet!
Zak basically followed me around whilst I did my everyday things and photographed the other cats.
He really is my little shadow.
Most adorable shadow ever!
One year ago today, Björn and I took a day trip to Stockholm to meet and collect the amazing Lorelai (SE*Backilandets Mercedes von Ekorntorp).
She was five days shy of three months old, and she was such a curious little thing. She immediately decided that we were her humans, and never seemed to miss her mother or littermates for a moment. Of course, she might have been distracted by my Salmon Poké Yama bowl…
Rory was just the happiest kitten I’ve ever seen.
She didn’t even mind me holding her on her back and cuddling her.
She was so tiny, she didn’t fit in the kitten harness I had bought for her, so Björn fashioned one for her out of some cord he had in his bag. Like everything else that day, it didn’t faze her a bit.
Okay, little Rory…get some rest! You thought it’s been a busy day so far…just wait until we get home and you meet the rest of your family!
Lorelai envisions herself a mighty bird hunter. Whenever she sees one, she chatters and starts to stalk it. I have even seen her run after a low-flying jackdaw or pigeon, eyes locked on the feathered prize.
When she sees one up a tree, she stares up at it.
I am not sure what she thinks is going to happen.
Maybe she’s hoping it will just fall off its branch and into her waiting claws..?
In the States, Taco Tuesday is a thing. But here in Sweden, it’s Taco Friday.
Because of Jacoby’s namesake, tacos always remind me of Jake.
When he was a kitten, I had to get him some catnip taco toys.
He loved those things! I wish I knew whatever happened to them. These photos were taken just a couple weeks after he joined our family.
He even had a little taco charm that he used to wear on his collar with his tag. You can see it in this photo.
A few years later, I found Jake a taco costume.
Which he wore with his usual aplomb. Look at him! It might as well be a silk tuxedo the way he’s modelling it!
Jake was always so chill when it came to wearing his outfits. People always used to ask me how I got him to wear his costumes. I would always kind of shrug and say, “I just ask him to, and he does it, because we’re partners.”
Damn. Now I really miss Jake…and I am dying for some tacos!
Love it or hate it, Facebook is a reality. It’s annoying as hell, but it’s also a great way to stay in touch with friends and family (like friends from second grade and several of my cousins in Canada). And then there’s the “Memories” it likes to show you.
This photo was today’s memory, four years ago. Jacoby and I were on our way to the Seacoast show in New Hampshire, one of our favourites. We’re riding the T on our way to meet the friend I was staying with. Interestingly enough, I never included this photo in a blog post about the show (and I made several posts about it, too)!
So bittersweet…a happy memory, to be sure, but I miss that way he gazed at me.
