Aby-a-Day – 4 Juli 2020: A holiday I don’t much feel like celebrating

My dad’s birthday is the 4th of July, so I have always thought of today as that first, and then the holiday celebrating the independence of the United States. My dad is 91 today, which is amazing. I haven’t seen him since 2007. I was planning a trip back to visit him…but then Trump was elected. So, lately…I don’t see very much to celebrate, quite honestly.

Boston has cancelled their world-renowned Boston Pops Concert and Fireworks Spectacular, which is amazing to me. It’s broadcast coast to coast, and it’s such a July 4th tradition. Maybe now people will take this pandemic seriously.

  1. I feel that I should be celebrating at a deeper level than the news of today. I could cite many examples of things in the news that ARE horribly depressing but I’m going to choose to believe my county’s ingenuity and form of government can overcome the reign of some current loser. Naive? Maybe, but happier.

By the way, 9/11 is our wedding anniversary and we were driving home from a lovely, isolated retreat when we saw signs that led us to turn on our car radio. So we found out about the Sept 11 attacks about 10 hours later than most people. We didn’t feel like celebrating for years after.

  2. Ugh. Everyone’s answer to cancelled public fireworks seems to be getting their own illegal ones and going nuts! Everybody I know is complaining about it, and lots of dogs and cats are freaking out. Glad things are calm here.
