Aby-a-Day – 24 November 2020: Izaak Bar Sinister (Cartoon Tuesday)

This is one of those ideas that seemed better in my head. I was going to work on my Dashiell as Hamilton piece, but the meme of Rudy Giuliani looking like villian Simon Bar Sinister from the old Underdog cartoons…and I had an idea.

I thought I’d try to draw Izaak as Simon, adding the whatever it was that was dripping down the side of Giuliani’s head last week…but meh. Not sure I like how it turned out. I think I need to go back to the late 1700’s.

  1. Giuliani as a scientist doesn’t work for me, but mad he is. I think you have perfectly captured Giuliani’s eyes, but the drip comes off as more of a wayward stripe on Izaak. Perhaps a Jack Nichols in The Shining would work better?

    1. Yeah, see my reply to Summer…it’s one of those things that was better in my head than on (virtual) paper. But I spent so much time on it (okay, an hour, ninety mintues tops), and I didn’t have anything else to post, so…here we are.

      1. Celebrate the things that don’t quite work so you can learn from them. Otherwise, I’d never have anything of my own to celebrate.

I think Freddy would make a great Top Cat, btw.

  2. Yeah, don’t turk Zak into that horrible man (Giuliani, not Bar Sinister, I mean).

There was an L.A. Goth club called Bar Sinister, my human says.

    1. Yeah…it was a bad idea, but I’ll own it. There are two takes on “Bar Sinister”: One is that it’s Jewish naming convention: Simon son of Sinister. The other is that it’s a heraldic device, with a slanted band going from the lower left to the upper right corner (like a “No” sign), which was used in medieval times as a symbol of bastardy. Still…it was an interesting challenge outside my comfort zone. So there’s that, I guess.
