Aby-a-Day – 6 Maj: Cat Scanner app (Thursday Things)

Yesterday in one of my Facebook cat groups, someone posted about an app, Cat Scanner, that claims to identify what breed your cat is from a photograph. So of course I had to try it out.

rorycatscan_E6725

freddycatscan_6730

It worked great with the Abyssinians.

angelcatscan_6727

It even identified Angel correctly.

markiscatscan_6726

And it got Markis pretty well, too.

tessiecatscan_6729

I was disappointed with how it did with Tessie. I was expecting perhaps a Burmilla…but I guess at least it could tell she’s a tortie?

zakcatscan_E6722

And then…there was Izaak. Complete and utter fail. I was expecting a Singapura to be a fairly easy ID…at worst, maybe a Burmese or Aby…but a Bengal!? Seriously? Well, you know I clicked that “Am I right?” link to tell them they weren’t. And the explanation was…the app only really works with FIFe-recognised breeds.

zakcatscan_E6723<

Um….what!? Singas have been recognised in FIFe since 2014…SEVEN YEARS!

zakcatscan_E6724

Which, naturally, I felt the need to tell them. Haven’t gotten a response yet, but I can’t wait to see what they say.

Aby-a-Day – 4 Maj: Isle of Dogs WIP (Cartoon Tuesday)

Last weekend, we watched an amazing movie called Isle of Dogs. It’s a Wes Anderson film, which I find rather hit-or-miss, but I did like his first stop-motion animated feature, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and it looked intriguing, so we gave it a shot. And, oh, was it worth it!

For a movie with the word “dog” in the title, it was actually, surprisingly, quite focused on cats. It’s an interesting Japanese pastiche in which the cat-loving Mayor Kobayashi has banished all dogs to Trash Island. In the introduction to the film this is all explained with some beautiful illustrations and scenes. My favourite, which is only seen for a minute or so, is the incredibly elaborate Cat Temple (seriously, look at that link; they did an incredible amount of work to create something that’s basically only one scene)! Of course, I instantly noticed the five cat statues to the right of the temple doors…one large, one tiny, two medium-sized and one small. I had to pause it and point out how the five cats matched our own five!

IOD-templeSketch

And then…I had to draw it. This is the sketch…

IOD-templeInk

And here’s the ink. Covid aftereffects have really been kicking my butt this week, so it took me a while. I know where I want to go with this, and how I want the colouring to look, but it’s taking me longer to actually do it than I planned.

Aby-a-Day – 26 Mars: Running with the cheetahs (Photoshop Friday)

I added the cats to the Cheetas at Boräs Djurparken. Of course, Lorelai running in their enclosure was a no-brainer.

zakfreddyboråscheetahs

Of course, when we saw the Cheetahs, they weren’t running at all…they were mostly just lounging around. Which Alfred, in particular, excels at.

Aby-a-Day – 22 Mars: It’s kind of springy (Hipstamatic Monday)

Today it was a balmy 10°C (50°F), so I thought I would take the cats out. Lorelai was on a leash again, but I attached Alfred’s leash to hers, so it was twice as long.

hipstaoutsidezakdash1

I managed to get Dashiell to come out with us too. He’s gotten so little exposure to things: trains, buses, cat shows…and just being outside because of the pandemic. I do the best I can to get him outside, though.

hipstaoutsiderory2

Rory, of course, was eager to run down the hill, but the leash sort of put a damper on that plan.

hipstaoutsiderory3

Maybe next time I’ll attach a third leash so she can go farther.

hipstaoutsidefreddyrory4

Freddy came galloping down to join Rory.

hipstaoutsidezak5

Izaak came swaggering over, too.

hipstaoutsidefreddyrorydash6

hipstaoutsidefreddyroryzak7

Look at them. The Three Musketeers.

hipstaoutsidedash8

hipstaoutsidedash9

Dash did pretty well outside. At least, he had a happy tail.

hipstaoutsidedashrory10

hipstaoutsidedashrory11

Dash and Rory have a sort of bond, being the two youngest cats.

hipstaoutsidefreddy12

hipstaoutsidefreddy13

Freddy had an awesome time running around. At over 5 kg (11 lbs)…he needs to run a bit.

hipstaoutsiderory14

It’s nice to go outside with the cats. It’s kind of nice to go anywhere with them, to be honest.

Aby-a-Day – 15 Mars: No means no! (Medical Monday)

As I mentioned , Lorelai’s most recent “boyfriend” has been neutered…but she’s in heat again. And we don’t have a new boy for her arranged yet.

roryfreddytable2

So Rory has been accosting…erm…Alfred, for some reason. Björn captured this the other day.

roryfreddytable3

Rory, who weighs 2.6 kg (barely six lbs), decided to tackle Freddy, who weighs 5.2 kg (11½ lbs of not entirely muscle).

roryfreddytable4

And she got him in a pretty decent headlock, too. Do not underestimate the power of a female.

roryfreddytable5

When he tried to escape, Rory bit him in the back leg.

roryfreddytable6

Rory..? Maybe try hitting on the one boy who isn’t permanently castrated?

Aby-a-Day – 1 Mars: “That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run” (Hipstamatic Monday)

I barely caught these two photos of Alfred running when we went outside yesterday. I saw him out of the corner of my eye, and caught him in the corner of the frame.

hipstafreddyrun2

They turned out okay when I cropped them, but I thought that they worked better as Hipstamatic snaps. So here you have Freddy running for no particular reason.

Aby-a-Day – 28 Februari: Me and my shadow (Swedish Sunday)

I took the cats outside this afternoon because it was such a lovely day. I even dragged Dashiell out with us.

dashfreddyoutside_6360

He stuck close to Alfred for a lot of the time he was out. It was sunset, so they cast some interesting shadows on the wall.

dashfreddyzakoutside_6370

Izaak trotted up to join them.

roryzakoutside_6373

Lorelai had to be on a leash today, because when we went out last week, she refused to come back in the house and ran laps around our building. Hopefully she’s learned her lesson.

dashoutside_6375

I just wish Dash would enjoy going outside more…

Aby-a-Day – 26 Februari: Where there’s food, there’s Freddy (Photoshop Friday)

Apparently, posting about the big cats at Borås Djurparken inspires me with Photoshop ideas. I woke up this morning with this idea, based on the time Alfred climbed up a tree. Because of course Freddy would fight a Lynx for food.

Aby-a-Day – 24 Februari: Wordless Wednesday (We’re willing to wait for it)

Aby-a-Day – 22 Februari: An outdoor adventure (Hipstamatic Monday)

It was a balmy 10°C (50°F) today, so Lorelai, Alfred; Izaak and I went outside for a little bit. This was the first time we’d been out for a few weeks, and I think we all needed it. I also wanted to check out the new “pond” at the bottom of the hill. I wonder how long it will last?

hipstaoutsideFreddyzak2

Freddy and Zak checked out their dustbowl tree, but it was too muddy for rolling.

hipstaoutsideZak3

hipstaoutsideFreddyrory4

The ground was kind of muddy and slushy, but they had fun reacquainting themselves with the outside.

hipstaoutsideFreddyrory5

Freddy and Rory investigated a metal drain cover. Freddy tried to roll on it, but I didn’t manage to catch it with my camera.

hipstaoutsideRoryzak6

hipstaoutsideFreddy7

Then they had to check out the back of the building.

hipstaoutsideMagpie8

There’s still ice on the lake, but I think it’ll melt soon. I also managed to include a magpie in the photo.

hipstaoutsideRory9

Rory noticed it when it flew away.

hipstaoutsideFreddybulbplant10

There’s definitely signs that spring is coming. The bulb plants are starting to sprout.

hipstaoutsideRory11

We do still have a pile of snow. Which, of course, Rory had to climb it.

hipstaoutsideRory12

The only thing they do about snow here is throw gravel on it (I really miss the snow melting stuff they used in Boston because gravelly snow is really hard to walk on). I think Rory got a piece of gravel caught in her paw pads.

hipstaoutsideRoryzak13

Since Rory was checking out the snow pile, Zak had to check it out as well.

hipstaoutsideRory14

Finally, we all went back inside…but Rory still wanted to explore. She was the last one to go back into our apartment.

Aby-a-Day – 20 Februari: Special Viewing Unit (Swedish Saturday)

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been on the air for 22 years, and I have been watching it since the very first episode. Since moving to Sweden, it’s been hard to keep up with the latest episodes, but I manage.

everyoneSVU1

New episodes air Thursday nights at 9pm Eastern time, which is 3am here, so I watch my SVU every Friday morning (good lord, I sound like my mom). And I rarely watch it alone.

everyoneSVU2

Björn snapped these photos of everyone watching the show with me. This is what our life in quarantine looks like. I can’t believe it’s been almost a year of this.

Aby-a-Day – 7 Februari: Alfred and Logan play in the tube (Cinema Sunday)

This is part of the backlog of photos I have; these were taken 27 June 2017. This was before we had fixed up the balcony; Alfred had been with us three weeks and Logan had been with us just over two weeks. Already the “brothers from another mother” were fast friends.

freddylogantubeC03455

Freddy grew up with a bigger version of the IKEA tube with his littermates, so this was especially fun for him.

freddylogantubeC03468

Logan loved it, too.

freddylogantubeC03475

He pretty much loved anything Freddy did.

freddylogantubeC03481

That tube was a lot of fun, but they eventually outgrew it. Maybe when we get more kittens, it’ll come out again.

I also took a little movie of them playing. It’s so cute.

Aby-a-Day – 6 Februari: Photobombing Freddy (Silly Saturday)

When I did Alfred’s birthday photoshoot, I started out by myself (Kalle came and helped me later), so I was trying to manage the cake in one hand and the camera in the other…all whilst trying to keep Freddy from eating it before I could get the candles lit. This was an accidental shot, but I thought it was so cute the way Angel was patiently waiting for her snack, so I kept it.

freddy4thBday_6121close

Don’t worry, Angel. You’ll get some, too.

Aby-a-Day – 4 Februari: Happy 4th Birthday, Alfred! (Thursday Things)

Today is Alfred’s fourth birthday! I can’t believe he’s four already. He was very excited about his “cake,” too.

freddy4thBday_6127

The candles, however, gave him pause.

freddy4thBday_6128

For about fifteen seconds.

freddy4thBday_6133

Freddy seemed about ready to eat his cake despite the flames, so I blew them out.

freddy4thBday_6137

Then he really tucked in. At least this year, no candles were eaten on Freddy’s birthday.

Aby-a-Day 29 Januari: Meow to the Chief (Photoshop Friday)

There’s a famous photo of Socks Clinton sitting at the Resolute Desk. After four long years of no pets in the White House, the Bidens have brought their two dogs to live with them. They are also bringing Winston the cat.

freddyovaloffice

Apparently, Winston hasn’t moved in yet, so I thought Alfred could keep his seat warm for him.

Aby-a-Day – 17 Januari: Let’s go outside! (Swedish Cinema Sunday)

We went outside with the cats today. Lorelai was the most eager, as usual…

rorysnow_5874

rorysnow_5875

She has zero fat and thin, sleek fur, but she doesn’t seem to feel the cold at all.

boyssnow_5849

The boys, on the other hand, kind of hovered by the door.

boyssnow_5852

Finally, Alfred decided to explore. Seeing as he’s got the most insulation, he should do…

freddysnow_5854

Our upstairs neighbours were outside sledding. Oksana is always happy to see Freddy.

freddyrorysnow_5858

He and Rory explored their sleds.

everyonesnow_5846

everyonesnow_5883

Eventually, everyone decided they had had enough snow and wanted to go back inside.

I also made a little video of our outing. Enjoy!

Aby-a-Day – 16 Januari: Sometimes, you just need a partner to nap with (Swedish Saturday)

It’s been a busy week…and I got to today and couldn’t think of anything to post.

freddyzaknap_5830

So, here are Alfred and Izaak, the nap partners.

Aby-a-Day – 14 Januari: More snow, more fun (Thursday Things)

Since I posted last week, we’ve had a bit more snow here. I took the cats outside again on Tuesday; it was actually rather warm and the snow was perfect and not too wet or icy.

rorysnow_5810

Lorelai, of course, went pelting off into the whiteness.

boyssnow_5793

The boys, however, were less enthusiastic (and yes, I made Dashiell come out with us).

freddysnow_5811

freddysnow_5812

Eventually, Alfred stretched his legs.

dashsnow_5797

dashsnow_5798

Dash even took a little walk around the building.

zaksnow_5818

Izaak…was displeased.

rorysnow_5802

rorysnow_5804

Rory, on the other hand, was playing with the snow.

rorysnow_5823

She was having so much fun out there.

haresnow_5814

haresnow_5815

haresnow_5816

One cool thing happened, though. Watching Rory run, I saw some movement in the background. At first I thought it was Freddy, but it was a hare! I wish one of the cats had seen it, though. I’d love to see what their reaction would be!

Aby-a-Day – 7 Januari: Snow day! (Thursday Things)

So, as you saw yesterday, we finally got a little bit of snow.

freddysnow_5731

Alfred, along with Lorelai and Izaak (who haven’t been outside in forever) were eager to get out, even if there was snow on the ground.

rorysnow_5735

Rory, of course, burst out the door. She never seems to feel the cold at all.

zaksnow_5742

zaksnow_5743

Zak was happy to be outside, but he wasn’t happy about the cold. He mostly stuck close to the building.

roryzaksnow_5748

You can see the difference in their happiness about being out.

zakfreddysnow_5749

roryfreddysnow_5752

Freddy immediately went around back to check out his bush. There wasn’t much to check out.

roryfreddysnow_5754

At one point, Rory couldn’t hold it in anymore, and she burst off in her signature flying joyful bound.

rorysnow_5755

Look at her go! It doesn’t matter if it’s cold and snow-covered or the hottest day of summer…she loves to run outside.

rorysnow_5760

Eventually, she came trotting back to the shelter of the building.

zakrorysnow_5761

“Well? Was it fun?”

freddyzaksnow_5765

Freddy also took off in his goofy gallop, and Zak followed behind him.

zakrorysnow_5767

We didn’t stay outside for very long, because it was breezy and felt colder than the -2°C that it actually was.

markissnow_5770

Markis was also outside enjoying the snow.

markissnow_5771

As were the neighbourhood children. Despite there being barely enough snow to cover the grass, they were all out there sliding down our hill.

Aby-a-Day – 6 Januari: Wordless Wednesday (It finally snowed…kind of)
