Aby-a-Day – 8 Juni: Double play! (Cat Show Saturday)

Today we are at our first cat show since Örebro in January – four and a half months is a long time to not go to a cat show! We were supposed to go to a show in Falköping last month…but someone missed some kittens’ vaccination boosters, so we couldn’t go. So here we are in Gislaved at the DackeKatten show.

rorydackekatt_7214

And what a great show it is! Lorelai was first up, and the first thing that happened when she got onto the table was…another judge brought a cat over to our judge’s table for a second opinion on the cat’s colour.

rorydackekatt_7211

Even though a strange cat was just inches away from her, Rory didn’t even notice. This is why Jacoby didn’t like FIFe…he didn’t like having to see other cats. Being close to them was right out. But that happens in FIFe. Luckily, Rory and Izaak, having grown up in FIFe, don’t mind being held out in the open with other cats.

rorydackekatt_7217

Rory’s judge today was Alexey Shchukin from the Netherlands.

rorydackekatt_7221

He had a judge-in-training, Hannah Jensen, with him, so he spent a lot of time explaining what he was doing as he went along.

rorydackekatt_7227

rorydackekatt_7233

He explained what he saw in Rory as she listened intently.

rorydackekatt_7240

Then Hannah looked at Rory herself, trying to see what Alexey saw.

rorydackekatt_7223

rorydackekatt_7225

During her judging, Rory decided Alexey need a hug. He kept explaining things to Hannah despite the schmoozing.

rorydackekatt_7242

Rory supervised as Alexey wrote down his judging notes.

zakdackekatt_7279

Then it was Zak’s turn on the judge’s table.

zakdackekatt_7265

His judge was Thea Friskovec, from Switzerland.

zakdackekatt_121725

zakdackekatt_7271

I didn’t know it until the end of the day, but she actually breeds Singapuras herself.

zakdackekatt_7277

Zak sat nicely whilst Thea wrote her notes on the judging sheet.

stellanChi_7258

hansoveChi_7254

Our friends Stellan and Hans Owe from S*Kustens were at the show, too, with their two girls, SW GIC S*Kustens Chi Sarà Con Te and IC S*Kustens Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. We’ve seen these two girls at shows many times before.

hansoweLucyzakdackekatt_7285

Because there were three Singapuras in the show, we got to compete for Best in Variety (BIV).

stellanChi_7282

It was a very close competition. Stellan and Hans Owe breed amazing Singas. But, to our shock…

zakBIVdackekatt_7290

Our Zak was named BIV!

roryNOMdackekatt_7245

And whilst I was watching that happen…Lorelai got a Nomination in her class (Unspayed Females)!

zakdackekatt_7292

Then Zak was up for his Nomination, and his competition was stiff: He was up against a sweet Egyptian Mau and a stunning Bengal.

roryzakNOM-BIVdackekatt_7318

But the Singapura was the one Nominated to the panel! Both Rory and Zak have gotten one Nom each…but this is the first time both our cats were Nommed in the same show.

rorychampiondackekatt_7371

Not only that…but Rory became a Champion today.

roryPANELdackekatt_7325

After lunch, it was time for the panels. Rory went up first.

roryPANELdackekatt_7336<

For Best in Show, Category 4, Unspayed Female, Rory was up against a very nice Cornish Rex.

roryBISdackekatt_7340

And she won!

roryBISdackekatt_7341

This is Rory’s very first Best in Show win.

zakPANELdackekatt_7345

Next up was Zak.

zakPANELdackekatt_7347

I mean, we were still over the moon about Zak getting his BIV. And now he was going to the panel!

zakPANELdackekatt_152338

Zak was up against a very nice Burmilla in Category 3 Unneutered Males.

zakPANELdackekatt_152355

And the judges’ choice was…

zakBISdackekatt_7363

Our Zak!

awardsdackekatt_174515

Both of our cats were Nominated, and both were named Best in Show. AND one got BIV! We were stunned…

zakroryawardsdackekatt_7367

We had a really good day at the show today…probably the best since we showed Jake.

Aby-a-Day – 2 Juni: An announcement (Cat Show Sunday)

This is Anubis Dashiell Hammett. My friend Meg took him to his first cat show today. It was a small, one-day CFF show in Worcester today. He won two Best Kitten Shorthair Specialty, and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best Allbreed Kitten. Not bad for his first show!

But more than that, Meg will be going with Russell to a CFA show in Finland in August. And Björn and I will meet up with her…and we’ll take Dash home with us! He is related to both Jacoby and Taz, and Meg wanted me to have him. We’ll register him in FIFe and show him along with Izaak and Lorelai.

I can’t wait to see how he fits in with our little clan!

Other People’s Abys – Kudos to Cousin Taz!

Remember Cousin Taz? Once upon a time, he had retired from the cat show circuit. But this year, he’s come back with a vengeance!

The CFA show season ended on 30 April, and it’s official! Taz is Best Abyssinian in Premiership in all of CFA, the 2nd Best Cat in Premiership in the North Atlantic Region 1, and the 15th Best Cat in Premiership in all of CFA.

Taz is a year younger than Jacoby, and to win these honours at the age of eight is incredible. You go, Taz!

Aby-a-Day – 18 January: Jacoby’s CFA big wins

You may recall that in 2016, Jacoby was the 21st Best Cat in Premiership in Region 1 and 8th Best Abyssinian in Premiership for that show season. I even made a silly sketch of his Regional win.

jakeNARtrophyIMG_5101 1

For his 21st Best Premier in Region 1 (the Northeast), he got this lovely trophy.

jakesawardC09853

We keep it on the kitchen windowsill.

jake-NARcatalogIMG_5103

He also had his photo printed in the program.

jakeNARcerterrorIMG_5102

And he received this certificate. Which…yeah. Besides my name being misspelled…who is Helena?

jake_correctRWaward

I did get a corrected certificate, eventually.

jakeNARrosetteIMG_7765

Back in 2013, I tried like hell to get Jake a breed win. He was 10th Best Abyssinian in Premiership in CFA for most of the spring, and we went to Stamford, CT to solidify his position. Sadly, in the last week, he was displaced and ended up being 11th.

jakeNARrosetteIMG_7759

Three years later, he was 8th Best Abyssinian in Premiership. Eighth. Best. And it was a complete susprise! We weren’t trying, like we were in 2013…but three years later, it happened.

jakeNARrosetteIMG_7764

Jake could not be prouder of his accomplishments. And, even better: Jake went to only two CFA shows last season (2016-2017)…and he was still 10th Best Abyssinian in Premiership! I am so proud of my boy.

Aby-a-Day – 12 May: Show Season Surprise!

Yesterday I got this email from Meg:

Which…OMG! Jacoby is a Top Ten Abyssinian in Premiership for the 2015-16 Show Season! Which means that, last year, along with being the 21st Best Cat in Premiership in the North Atlantic Region (Region 1) among all breeds, he’s also the 8th Best Abyssinian in Premiership throughout the CFA worldwide! It’s also ironic because, three years ago, Meg and I tried to get Jake to hold onto his 10th Best ranking, only to have him lose it the last weekend of the season. He was 11th Best Abyssinian in Premiership for 2012-13…but there’s no ribbon for that.

jakesmugIMG_4166

Do you think Jake’s newfound fame will go to his head?

jakesmugIMG_4165

Yeah, right.

jakesmugIMG_4163

And…goodnight.

Aby-a-Day – 3 May: Winner, winner, chicken dinner! (Cartoon Tuesday)

1 May is the “new year” for many organisations I’ve been involved with over the years. One is the Society for Creative Anachronism, which is currently celebrating its 50th year. Another is the CFA, which starts its new show season on 1 May.

As a part of CFA’s new year’s festivities, they announce their National and Regional award winners, which include the best of the breeds and the top 25 cats in the Kitten, Championship, Premier and HHP classes. And this year there was a huge surprise: Jacoby is one of the 21st Best Cat in Premiership in the North Atlantic Region!

jake21

This was completely unexpected, as we didn’t even go to that many shows this past year…but the shows we did go to he did pretty well, apparently! And now, he will get to add some more letters to his name; he will now be GP, RW Pellburn Jacoby Stealin’ Home! And even funnier…last year our friend Linda’s Somali, Pippi was 21st Best Cat in Premiership in the North Atlantic Region last year…so they have that in common along with their costume prowess!

A double surprise from Westchester

I’ve been waiting for the points from the Westchester cat show to show up on TICA‘s TDS Online system so that I could apply for Jacoby’s Grand Champion Alter Title. If you recall, he had enough finals to Grand, but enough points to Double Grand after the second day of the show.

Or so I thought. He earned his Champion Alter Title at his first TICA show, the Salty Cats show in Providence in March, 2012.

However, according to TICA, Jake earned his Grand Champion Alter title on Saturday at Westchester.

And on Sunday, he DID earn his Double Grand! I must have miscalculated somewhere (not hard to do: it involves math), or misread the rules or something, but I’m just happy that he did earn his Double Grand. I have to admit, it was a little discouraging to go to a two-day, 14 ring show last year and not make one. Single. Final. ALL weekend…I’m pretty psyched about this, to say the least.

That’s the one interesting thing about TICA as compared to CFA: once a cat becomes a Grand Champion (or Grand Champion Alter), he can continue collecting points to become a Double, Triple, or Quadruple Grand Champion, and from there, the highest title of Supreme Grand Champion (Alter). You can see where I got confused:

Champion Requirements for Titles:
CH/CHA: 150 points from 2 different judges, plus one final
GRC/GCA: 500 points with 3 finals, 1 in Top 5 Specialty or Top 10 Allbreed
DGC/DGCA: 1000 points plus 1 final in Top 5 Specialty or Top 10 Allbreed
TGC/TGCA: 1500 points plus 1 final in Top 5 Specialty or Top 10 Allbreed
QGC/QGCA: 2000 points plus 1 final in Top 5 Specialty or Top 10 Allbreed
SGC/SGCA: 3000 points plus 1 Best Cat as a QGC/QGCA/QGM

The points and the finals are cumulative, so the 3 finals and the 500 points include the 150 points and the final you earned to get the Championship. I think that may be where I messed up my math in tracking Jake’s points and finals. In any event, I trust TICA’s computer, so if they say he’s a Double Grand, who am I to disagree?

westchestergrandIMG_3053

Congratulations to Jake though…Grand Premier, Double Grand Champion Alter, and Therapy Cat!
