Aby-a-Day – 20 Mars 2020: Toothy Towels (Fashion Friday)

This was back in 2017, but Björn found the cutest embroidered towels in the That’s Sew Creative shop on Etsy.

Just look at these cute designs…and don’t they look like Abys? We had been using my Yoga Cat towel on the tub, but the minute I saw these, I knew we had to have them.

AbytowelBjorn

I had only two requirements…we had to have dark grey towels, and her machine needed to be able to make the Ö in Björn. Which, as you can see, she could do.

AbytowelKoshka

Here’s mine. I love the bow on the tail. They make me smile every time I go into the bathroom.

freddybathroom

But are they Abyssinians?

freddybathroomC06102

Alfred seems to think so.

Aby-a-Day – 21 Mars: Bathroom mystery (Thursday Things)

Alfred, it seems, is always up to something.

freddybathroomC06099

This is his newest thing. He sits in our bathroom. He’s not sleeping, he’s not grooming…

freddybathroomC06101

…He’s just sitting there on the rug.

freddybathroomC06102

I have no idea what he’s doing. Probably plotting how to take over the world. Or how to break into the cabinet where the food is kept. One of those.

And in case you’re wondering about those towels, Björn found them in this Etsy seller’s shop a couple of years ago. We thought they looked like Abys…so of course we ordered a set!

Aby-a-Day – 15 Mars: Remembering Logan in Finland (Friday Flashback)

I have been thinking a lot about Logan recently. I suppose it’s only natural; his birthday was last Saturday, and this is the month before we found out about his FIP. I guess March is going to be hard for a while. But this is a memory that always makes me smile.

loganbathroomC06973

When we took Logan to Finland for a show, Logan discovered the heated bathroom floor.

loganbathroomC06975

He loved it!

loganbathroomC06994

He was always a little less stocky than Izaak is.

loganbathroomC06995

It was so funny to watch him rolling on the warm, but hard, floor. He was like, “What is this sorcery!?”

loganbathroomC06996

Have you ever seen a happier little cat?

loganbathroomC06998

He really loved it.

loganbathroomC07004

When we couldn’t find Logan anywhere else in the room, we knew he had to be there on the bathroom floor. He even slept in there instead of on the bed or the chair!

loganbathroomC07007

We haven’t stayed in a hotel with heated floor since then with any cat. I was looking forward to seeing what Logan would do when we encountered one again; now I’m just wondering if Lorelai and Zak will have the same reaction.

Aby-a-Day – 8 April: “I would rather sleep in a bathroom than in another hotel” (Silly Cinema Cat Show Sunday)

Back in November, Björn and I went to a show in Finland with Logan. A lot happened on that trip, about which I will post more later, but the funniest thing was Logan’s reaction to the hotel bathroom in Helsinki.

loganbathroomC06973

Specifically, the heated bathroom floor.

loganbathroomC06975

He loved it!

loganbathroomC06994

loganbathroomC06995

He could not believe the floor was warm. He rolled and rolled on it endlessly.

loganbathroomC06996

loganbathroomC06998

Best thing ever!

loganbathroomC07004

When we couldn’t find Logan anywhere else in the room, we knew he had to be there on the bathroom floor. He even slept in there instead of on the bed or the chair!

loganbathroomC07007

Oops, time for a groom!

loganhelsinkibathIMG_0022

And here are a couple of videos I took of Logan enjoying the bathroom as well (just click on them to view them in a new window).

loganhelsinkibathIMG_0023

We haven’t been to a hotel with a heated floor again since then, but it’s always the first thing Logan looks for when we go to a new hotel.

Aby-a-Day – 21 April: Good to the last drop

As you saw yesterday, Jacoby and Björn shared a chicken salad sandwich when we went to visit the cats yesterday.

jakesandwichIMG_4021 1

And by “share,” I mean “Jake demanded to have some and wasn’t about to take no for an answer.”

jakesandwichIMG_4022 1

Semantics, I know.

jakesandwichIMG_4024

But even after the sandwich was eaten, Jake refused to believe it was really gone.

jakesandwichIMG_4027

I mean, he really played the denial card to the utmost.

jakesandwichIMG_4030 1

Jake was determined not to miss a morsel.

jakesandwichIMG_4032 1

It’s kind of interesting how well designed those plastic sandwich holders are. It’s like they were designed with the Abyssinian head in mind…

jakesandwichIMG_4033

It’s almost as though the sandwich box makers thought to themselves, “We need to make a box that securely holds a sandwich…and also fits an Aby’s head without any undue bending of the ears. Yeah, I’m sure that was their primary consideration.

Aby-a-Day – 20 April: Wordless Wednesday (“Is that a sandwich? Can I have it?”)

Aby-a-Day – 11 February: Angel’s spa day

On Sunday, I decided to give Angel a bath.

angelbathC04558

The second I shut the bathroom door with her inside, she knew something was up.

angelbathC04554

She hasn’t had a bath in a very long time…at least two years (and probably more like four or five). Her fur was starting to look and feel a little greasy in a way that Jacoby’s fur never does.

angelbathC04548

Angel’s spa day started off with a mani-pedi, and then a good Furmination. I actually got this Furminator with an “eject button” as a free gift from Blog Paws, and I have to say, it’s much better than the non-ejecting model.

angelbathC04542

Don’t worry, Angel. Your hair won’t go to waste. I have plans to make Jake a Trump wig out of it. It’s just the right colour!

angelbathC04566

Then, I put her into the tub…she wasn’t thrilled with that. I have to say, though, having sliding glass doors on the bathtub really makes bathing cats a lot easier!

angelbathC04586

See? She can’t escape!

angelbathC04570

No matter how hard she tries…

angelbathC04572

…she can’t get the doors open.

angelbathC04579

It really makes a difference. I can bathe a cat without any help. It’s nice. When we move, we’ll be back to shower curtains…but we’ll also have a hand-held shower head, so rinsing will be easier. It’s a trade-off I can accept.

angelbathC04594

Finally it was time to dry off.

angelbathC04605

I usually blow-dry Jake, but if I tried that with Angel she would freak out.

angelbathC04619

So with her, it’s towel dry, lick, and shake.

angelbathC04642

Angel, doesn’t it feel good to be all clean and sparkly?

angelbathC04633

Er…I’ll ask you again once you’re all dry.

Aby-a-Day – December 14: Getting Ready (Miniature Monday)

Mini-Jake loves to help me get ready in the morning!

minijakebjdbathroom1

He comes into the bathroom with me and helps me put on my make up.

minijakebjdbathroom4

The nicest thing about his help is…he doesn’t actually get in my way and knock things over the way the real Jacoby does!

Aby-a-Day – August 24: Giants in the land of miniatures (Miniature Monday)

Thanks, tangentially, to the very missed Catsparella, I’ve fallen in love with Tony Moly beauty products.

minijakebjdbathroom2

A lot of their products are packaged in cute little fruit-shaped packages. I thought it would be fun to pose the Russian ball-jointed Jacoby doll with some of my favourites. Here he is with my Apple Hand Cream and my Peach Lip Balm.

minijakebjdbathroom3

Here’s the Jake doll on my Tangerine Hand Cream. Cats may hate citrus, but…well, this is an exception.

Aby-a-Day – July 5: Togetherness

I’m never alone in the bathroom. Ever.

jakemorningIMG_8243

One reason, at least in the morning, is that Jacoby has suddenly decided that he doesn’t want to eat in his house the way he’s been doing for years.

jakemorningIMG_8244

Nope, now he wants to eat with me.

jakemorningIMG_8246

In the bathroom.

jakemorningIMG_8247

While I’m getting ready for work.

jakemorningIMG_8249

And of course, I don’t mind the company but…when Jake isn’t eating, he’s a little bit…oh, what’s the word?

jakemorningIMG_8250

Clingy? Needy? No…that’s not quite it. Let’s just say he’s extremely “interactive” and leave it at that.

jakemorningIMG_8251

He’s actually acquired a new nickname lately: Rivningskula, which is Swedish for “wrecking ball.” He seems to be perfecting his skill of knocking things off counters with a vengeance.

jakemorningIMG_8256

I guess it’s my own fault…I should have been telling him to “stop that, Jake” and not, “Jake…knock it off!”

Aby-a-Day – June 19: Layover (Flashback Friday)

When I adopted Angel from Purebreds Plus, I had to fly out to Northern California to collect her. This wasn’t a problem at all for me since, despite living in New England, I grew up in Northern California, and my mother lives in Davis…8 miles away from Purebreds Plus’ headquarters in Dixon, CA.

angel-airport1

So while it wasn’t a problem for me, I did worry about Angel’s trip home to Boston. The flight had had a layover and we had to change planes in Denver. Because Angel hadn’t ever really travelled, and she had never worn a harness, I got her a MetPet Soft-Sided Security Harness. This turned out to not be such a great idea as she managed to wrestle out of it inside her carrier.

angel-airport2

I also prepared her a makeshift litter box using a folding shirt box and a Ziploc bag full of litter. She was having none of that, either. The next time I need to take a long flight with an Aby, I think I’ll skip the litter box attempts and just make sure I have a supply of pee pads instead.

Aby-a-Day – June 16: When Angel first came to our house… (Cartoon Tuesday)

More shameless filler, I’m afraid, before we return to our regularly scheduled cartoons…

angel attack

Back when we only had three cats, Tessie and Kylie would kind of gang up on Angel when she was in the litterbox. Kylie has always loved to sneak attack anyone coming out of the bathroom (humans included). Tessie would use this to her advantage; she’d sit outside the box and herd Angel towards Kylie’s ambush.

This happened in July 2009, but I didn’t have a camera around to capture it. So, I drew it instead.

abycartoon59

I did another cartoon about it back in 2013. This got a lot better when Jacoby arrived. I am a firm believer that cats work better in even numbers than in odd ones.

Aby-a-Day – April 30: Bathing beauty

You may recall a couple of years ago when provided photographic evidence that I can bathe Jacoby with one hand. Well, as easy as it was to bathe him in our old apartment…

jakebathC08765

jakebathC08768

…It’s about 100 times easier in our new apartment!

jakebathC08795

jakebathC08796

The secret is the sliding glass doors.

jakebathC08801

Which Jake cannot open.

jakebathC08808

jakebathC08812

So I don’t need to hold onto him at all, unlike when we only had a shower curtain.

jakebathC08832

jakebathC08837

jakebathC08841

This is so awesome. The only thing that would make bathing him even easier would be if we had a Shower Massage or some other kind of sprayer. Unfortunately, our building has some crazy Euro-fixtures and nothing we can buy will fit.

jakebathC08816

jakebathC08817

So I have to rinse him under the faucet, or with cups.

jakebathC08870

jakebathC08879

Having a door that shuts, though, makes a huge difference. I almost look forward to our pre-catshow bath, now.

jakebathC08863

jakebathC08865

Can’t exactly say the same for Jake, though.

Aby-a-Day – February 14: “Cherished” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Cherished.”

jakecherishIMG_6911

No question who is cherished in our house.

jakecherishIMG_6912

I do believe it’s a two-way street, though. I think Jacoby cherishes me, too. He’s always by my side, helping.

jakecherishIMG_6913

A recent article in The Huffington Post about the way felines and humans interact says, among other things, that the dynamics of cat-human relationships are very much like human-human bonds.

jakecherishIMG_6914

“Researchers concluded cats do indeed attach to humans — especially women — as social partners, and not just because they want to keep their food bowls full.”

jakecherishIMG_6915

One part of the article I really liked: “The researchers established that cats and their owners heavily influence one another, often to the extent that they control each other’s behaviors. Extroverted women with young, active cats seem to be the most in tune with each other. The kitties in these pairings only have to give subtle cues – for example, a single upright movement of the tail — to let their owners know they’re looking for friendly attention…cats also seem to remember human kindness and return the favor later. If an owner fulfills her feline’s wish to interact, the cat will often comply with the owner’s desire for contact at other times.”

jakecherishIMG_6916

This right here, I believe, is why Jake is so good-natured about dressing up and posing for photos. I always tell people he does these things “because I ask him to” and, apparently, I was dead-on correct. He’s indulging me because I indulge him. Quid pro quo.

jakecherishIMG_6918

I’ve always thought that interacting with a cat was like interacting with a small, non-verbal human. Seems I was onto something.

jakecherishIMG_6921

We already know that cats recognise certain words (my Siamese Harri knew “Go on the bed and lie down” among other things), and that they invented meowing as a way to try to communicate with us on our terms.

jakecherishIMG_6922

Cats also chose to live with us as opposed to humans deciding to domesticate them. Cats alone of all domesticated animals, researchers think, chose to enter into a partnership with humans.

jakecherishIMG_6920

Dogs may be man’s best friend, but man is cat’s best friend.

Aby-a-Day – February 9: Awkward Bathroom Selfies (Hipstamatic Monday)

It’s amazing the fun you can have with just a mirror and a camera.

hipstajakecoco1

I was getting ready for work the other day and Jacoby joined me in the bathroom to “help.”

hipstajakecoco2

So I scooped him up and took some silly photos of the two of us.

hipstajakecoco3

I was actually thinking of those “awkward bathroom cat selfies” you see on the internet.

hipstajakecoco4

Jake just can’t be awkward in front of a camera, no matter how hard I try, I guess.

hipstajakecoco5

By the way, you’ll notice that I am wearing my Winston “Adopt” T-shirt that I posted about last year.

Aby-a-Day – November 30: Scenes from the World Show – Bathroom Buddies

I have a lot of photos from the World Show to share, which I will post on this blog over the next few days and weeks.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC01953

But I wanted to start with these, because I think they’re just so cute.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC01955

When Meg and I go to a show together, we share a hotel room. Depending on what cat Meg is showing, this can be an interesting situation. We have had to keep one Aby in a show tent all night.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC01961

Jacoby and Garçon, however, get along really well. They may not sleep cuddled up together, but they do sleep on the same bed when they’re at a show together.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC01968

They also share the same bathroom.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC01972

We had two litterboxes in there, one for each boy…but at the end of the weekend, when we were cleaning up, only one of the boxes had been used. That’s pretty impressive, really, for two cats who don’t regularly live together.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC01973

Garçon loves me for some reason. The first time I met him, he stole my scarf so he could cuddle with it.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC02001

I’m sure Jake knows that Garçon has a crush on me.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC01974

I’m not sure he likes it.

WS-jakegarconbathroomC01975

Don’t worry, Jakey! You’ll always be my boy!

Aby-a-Day – November 3: Morning Routine (Hipstamatic Monday)

Jacoby just loves to help me get ready in the morning.

hipstajakemorning12

hipstajakemorning15

See? He’s combing his own chin on the Furminator! Such a helpful boy!

hipstajakemorning13

“Oh, wait. Are those treats?”

hipstajakemorning10

“I need to step back and examine this situation.”

hipstajakemorning14

“Oh look! Flowers!”

hipstajakemorning16

“Come on, Jake – focus! Do you remember getting treats out of this container before?”

hipstajakemorning17

“Yes! This is definitely the Bathroom Treat Container.”

hipstajakemorning21

“And…yeah. I can’t open it. I remember that, too.”

hipstajakemorning20

“Hey, Mom…a little help? Since you’re standing right there, I’m pretty sure I can’t try the “knocking-it-off-the-counter-and-see-if-it-opens” trick…so be a love and use those thumbs for something other than putting on make-up? You look great, by the way…”

Aby-a-Day – October 27: I’m so happy you’re awake! (Hipstamatic Monday)

My husband feeds the cats in the morning, so usually when I’m getting ready in the morning, Jacoby is in his house eating. He doesn’t get to come out until the girls are finished eating.

hipstajakemorning6

Some mornings, though, everyone eats faster than usual, so Jake gets an early discharge.

hipstajakemorning9

When that happens, he comes into my bathroom to help me get dressed for work.

hipstajakemorning8

Jake is always sooooo happy to be able to see me in the morning.

hipstajakemorning7

I love to spend time with him in the morning, too.

hipstajakemorning3

Although, maybe it’s a good thing for my attendance record at work that he doesn’t always get to see me in the morning! Between Jake’s attention and my taking his photo, I’d be late every day!

Aby-a-Day – July 31: Taking Naughtiness to New Heights

Jacoby has developed a new habit.

jakebathroomIMG_5152

He likes to sit on top of the cabinet in the front bathroom and oversee people going about their bathroom business.

jakebathroomIMG_5153

jakebathroomIMG_5154

As you can see, he’s quite proud of his achievement.

jakebathroomIMG_5155

“This is mine!”

jakebathroomIMG_5156

I’m not sure why he likes it up there so much. He’s quite tall, and there’s not enough room for him to stand comfortably.

jakebathroomIMG_5158

He can’t really sit up, either.

jakebathroomIMG_5159

Come on down from there, Jakey-boy.

tessiebathroomIMG_5161

Of course, now Tessie wants to try to get up there, too.
