Aby-a-Day – 29 Juni: Don’t worry Mom…I got your back (Singapura Saturday)

Björn took these photos while I was sleeping…

zakcocosleep_044255

These were actually taken after we rushed Jacoby to the hospital…but never brought him home.

zakcocosleep_044252

Izaak was sleeping on me exactly the way Jake used to do.

zakcocosleep_044248

It’s almost like Zak knew what was going to happen before the rest of us did.

Aby-a-Day – 30 Mars: There’s more than one way to use a duvet (Silly Singapura Saturday)

One day I discovered Izaak sleeping in our bed. Not at all unusual, but…

zakduvet_6453

…he was literally sleeping in the duvet. Now, Zak loves to sleep under the covers, but for whatever reason…

zakduvet_6454

…he found the open bottom and burrowed inside.

zakduvet_6455

He was so cute in his little nest that I just couldn’t make the bed all day. I mean, how could I?

Aby-a-Day – 7 Mars: Strange bedfellows (Thursday Things)

In my 50+ year association with cats, I have noticed several things. One of them is the fact that they have fads. Suddenly, a toy will become the best thing ever, food goes in and out of style, and sleeping places go from ignored to fought over.

The last couple of months, the favoured sleeping spot has been our bed when we’re not in it. Because of course, when we’re in the bed, everyone congregates there. Jacoby and Izaak especially have to sleep either on or next to me.

jakezakrorybed_6168

Lorelai joined Zak and Jake for a cuddle last week. Jake can get…resentful…of the younger cats.

jakezakrorybed_6166

I don’t know…maybe Jake is actually enjoying cuddling with kittens. Or maybe he just likes them better when they – and he – are asleep.

zakjakebed_6283

It’s usually Zak sleeping with Jake…

jakerorybed_6411

…but yesterday I came across this. Lorelai with Jake but without Zak is a rarity. Actually, this may be the first time I’ve seen them napping together. Okay, they aren’t exactly cuddling, but they are sleeping together!

jakerorybed_6412

Even back in Boston, Jake liked to burrow under the comforter in the winter. In Sweden, instead of one big comforter, we use two small ones (one for each person). It’s actually quite brilliant; it’s easier to put on the duvet covers, and there’s never a fight over who gets the covers.

It’s also easier for cats to burrow under the covers and sleep in the middle of the bed. I think I’m not the only person who appreciates Scandinavian sleeping.

Aby-a-Day – 3 Mars: Laser strike (Cinema Sunday)

Last year at a cat show, we won a blue laser pointer in one of the raffles.

rorylaserC05604

I’ve always thought blue and green laser pointers were better for cats than red ones because cats see blues and greens much better than they see reds.

roryzaklaserC05605

Lorelai loves the laser pointer, regardless of colour. She really loves the green one, which is also Jacoby’s favourite. She loves it so much that she assumes her pounce position in the hallway, stares at us (Björn, mostly) and meows at us to “make the light go!” We run it up and down the hallway, into the kitchen, and into our bedroom.

The lighting in our bedroom isn’t great, so we tried capturing her with the flash on. Flash photos didn’t capture her frenzy very well, so we tried without the flash.

That didn’t really work, either…so here’s a video of Rory playing on the bed with the green laser pointer.

rorylaserC05591

Our hallway is even less well-lit than our bedroom, but I had to show her other trick.

rorylaserC05598

She gets going so fast when the laser pointer goes up the door…

rorylaserC05599

…that she leaps higher than the door handle!

rorylaserC05642

rorylaserC05643

She runs so fast when she’s chasing the laser pointer, and her run includes these little “flying leaps” in the middle of her gallop. It’s amazing to watch her.

We tried to capture it in the video above, but I am not sure that it really captures the way she runs. But what it does capture is something more unusual and rare: Angel playing with Rory and Izaak!

Aby-a-Day – 16 August: “Scars are simply modern battle wounds. Sometimes the enemy happens to be inside us.”

As you saw from yesterday’s post, Jacoby came home from his exploratory surgery with no problems.

When I came to collect him, the first thing that happened was that I was handed a folder with Jake’s aftercare instructions.

They were detailed, but completely manageable.

However, as you saw yesterday, AniCura sent him home with a hard plastic “Cone of Shame*.” Nobody wants to wear that, least of all our Jake. So on our way back to the bus stop, we stopped off at a conveniently located pet shop, but they didn’t have any soft cones, so I ended up buying him a Trixie Surgery Suit. We dressed him at the shop, but, sadly, I didn’t take any photos when we tried the onesie on Jake.

jakepostopIMG_4329

But, as you saw yesterday, Jake had zero issues with wearing his onesie. In fact, he probably had fewer issues with it than he would have had with the hard cone!

jakezakreddydayafterIMG_4338

This morning, I woke up to…this. Jake was in a cuddle puddle on our bed with Alfred and Izaak!

jakezakreddydayafterIMG_4352

I think Jake was as surprised about that as I was. I blame his (prescribed) post-op opioid painkillers.

jakezakreddyangeldayafterIMG_4346

But it wasn’t just Freddy and Zak. Angel was on the bed, too!

angeltoocloseIMG_4343

She didn’t join the boys’ cuddle puddle, but she clearly approved of it.

angeltoocloseIMG_4344

Okay, Angel. Back off…

rorytoocloseIMG_4342

Meanwhile, on my stomach…we had Lorelai. Which means all five cats were on our bed at the same time!

jakezakreddydayafterIMG_4339

It may be Jake’s medication, but I’m taking it as a solid win!

* Or “Cone of Courage,” as one friend called it.
