Aby-a-Day – November 29: Boxing match (Silly Sunday)

A couple of weeks ago, I ordered something from Amazon that came in a really big box.

jakeboxIMG_1038

Jacoby was all over that action.

jakeboxIMG_1039

Still, uneasy rests the head of the cat that owns the box.

jakekylieboxIMG_1042

You can’t help but feel that there are other cats out there who would like nothing better than to steal your box out from under you.

jakekylieboxIMG_1043

“I feel like I’m being watched…”

jakekylieboxIMG_1047

“…Kylie..?”

jakeboxIMG_1048

“Must have been my imagination…”

jakekylieboxIMG_1049

“Still, I can’t seem to shake this feeling.”

jakeboxIMG_1050

“Ahhh…I’m just being paranoid.”

jakekylieboxIMG_1052

Or…not.

jakeboxIMG_1054

Always trust your gut, Jake!

Aby-a-Day – October 8: The cat’s in the bag

So Roche Bros. opened a store in Downtown Crossing. This instantly became the easiest place to buy groceries, because it’s only two T stops from our building.

jakerochebrosC03631

The last time I went, I forgot to bring any bag with me.

jakerochebrosC03630

So I picked up this cool, folding, box-bag thing. I think it’s meant for the trunks of people’s cars. Jacoby clearly thought it was for him.

jakerochebrosC03637

So I gave him a little ride in his box-bag.

jakerochebrosC03638

As you can see, he hated that.

jakerochebrosC03639

Jake just loves to go for rides in things.

jakerochebrosC03641

He seemed a little disappointed when I set the box-bag down on the floor and went to put away the groceries I’d bought.

Aby-a-Day – October 7: Wordless Wednesday (It’s a box! It’s a bag! It’s both in one!)

Aby-a-Day – October 3: “Crimson” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Crimson.”

jakebeer

So here is Jacoby sitting on a Heineken box with a big crimson star on it.

(HA! I bet you thought I was going to do something about Harvard, didn’t you?)

Aby-a-Day – October 6: Morning Stretch (Hipstamatic Monday)

Lately Jacoby has taken to sleeping inside a big box as his preferred napping spot.

hipstajakeangelstretch1

I haven’t been able to get a good shot of him in his box yet. But here he is stretching upon awakening and exiting his box.

hipstajakeangelstretch2

Oddly, Angel didn’t hiss at him when he walked right past her, and that I did manage to capture on digital film.

Aby-a-Day – July 17: It’s so perfect, it’s hard to believe it wasn’t meant for cats!

We have this awesome little cloth basket/box.

angelclothboxIMG_4893

It was originally a gift basket filled with cheese, crackers and wine that my boss got for his birthday.

angelclothboxIMG_4892

When he emptied the contents, he asked me if I wanted it.

angelclothboxIMG_4889

angelclothboxIMG_4890

I saw its potential instantly and, of course, snapped it up and brought it home. I put it on one of the window seats.

jakebasketE_0917

As it happens, one of my friend Kate’s Big Daddy catnip pads fits perfectly inside. And it’s not the only thing that fits perfectly inside, either.

jakebasketE_0918

This basket is perfectly cat shaped.

jakebasketE_0919

I call it the “cat loaf pan.”

Aby-a-Day – July 13: Boxception

So we were finally doing some unpacking, and we had a load of boxes to take out to the recycling bin on the first floor. We logically put the smaller boxes inside the larger ones to make it easier to carry them all in one go.

jakeboxesE_0920

As I posted a few months ago, Jacoby is a little obsessed with our trips to take out recycling.

jakeboxesE_0921

jakeboxesE_0922

So it should not have surprised me when this happened.

jakeboxesE_0924

jakeboxesE_0925

Jake was so proud of himself.

jakeboxesE_0926

And it was pretty impressive the way he managed to worm his way into the exact centre of all the boxes.

jakeboxesE_0927

He did NOT want to come out of there, either.

jakeboxesE_0929

Nope.

jakeboxesE_0928

Not at all.

Aby-a-Day – June 19: Thinking outside the box

Today is a cat holiday: International Box Day!

angelcableIMG_4767

However, there’s another kind of box that’s beloved and celebrated in our household. The cable box!

jakecableboxE_0356

It’s a highly coveted spot, too. For some reason, they are not at all interested in the cable box in the living room, but the one in the art room is apparently quite awesome.

jakecableboxE_0358

And when one cat has it, he or she will sit there until they have to go to another box or until they hear food.

jakecableboxE_0361

Oddly, they don’t really fight over it, and they don’t try to share. But when someone wants it and someone else is on it, they’ll keep coming back to check if it’s empty. And when it’s not, you can hear the loud, frustrated sigh.

jakecableboxE_0362

I know it’s warm, but it doesn’t look at all comfortable. And yet it’s one of the most popular napping spots in the house.

Aby-a-Day – April 8: “Let sleeping cats lie” (Cartoon Tuesday)

Now I know some non-Abys love kitty beds, and some Abys hate them, but by and large this is what I’ve seen happen:

abycartoon119

Tessie really would rather be in a box than in a posh bed. Here’s a random real-life example taken a couple of days ago, so you tell me:

jaketessiewindow

And yes, the two Abys in this cartoon are Jacoby’s Uncle Clancy and his Cousin Seamus, each in their own little beds as seen in last Saturday’s “Family” post!

Aby-a-Day – March 10: I like to move it, move it, move it (Hipstamatic Monday)

One thing about moving is that it involves a lot of boxes.

hipstajakemoving1

hipstajakemoving2

hipstajakemoving3

And you know how cats are about boxes!

hipstajakemoving4

hipstajakemoving5

hipstajakemoving6

We had them stacked up pretty high and Jacoby in particular was having a blast sitting on all the new perches.

hipstajakeangelmoving1

I mean, the boxes were at least as high as the cat trees! If not higher!

hipstajakeangelmoving2

I think Angel was a little jealous.

hipstajakeangelmoving3

hipstajakeangelmoving5

Of course, she could have jumped up on the boxes, too, but she feels really safe on the cat tree. It’s her sanctuary.

hipstajakeangelmoving6

Jake’s such a good time Charlie, his sanctuary is wherever he wants it to be.

hipstajakeangelmoving7

hipstajakeangelmoving8

Even something as temporary and ephemeral as a stack of moving boxes.

Aby-a-Day – January 21: “The trouble with boxing is that too often it ends in sadness” (Cartoon Tuesday)

I always wonder what that cats think about moving.

abycartoon108

I mean, it must be exciting, with all these new boxes coming in, right?

Aby-a-Day – December 22: Weruva, Jake’s new BFF

The other day, Jacoby got a box in the mail.

jakeweruvaE_7762

jakeweruvaE_7757

jakeweruvaE_7755

jakeweruvaE_7760

He knew it was for him as soon as I brought it into the apartment, too. Of course, it said “For the Cat of the Year” on it, but I didn’t know Jake could read.

weruvafoodE_7806

weruvaE_7817

The box was full of Weruva Cat Food and treats!

weruvaE_7830

Weruva is based in Natick, MA, and they also make Best Feline Friend cat food. I love that the company is named after three cats: WEbster, RUdi and VAnessa. I also love that there is a cat named Vanessa.

jakeweruvaE_7809

jakeweruvaE_7818

This was part of Jake’s “Cat of the Year” award from the Westchester show last month. I didn’t know Jake was getting food as part of his honours and was very surprised when the Weruva rep announced it during the ceremony.

jakeweruvaE_7821

Jake inspected the contents of his box thoroughly.

jakeweruvaE_7823

Very thoroughly.

jakeweruvaE_7825

jakeweruvaE_7826

Very very thoroughly!

jakeweruvaE_7827

He was much more interested in the treat canisters than he was in the food packets. Typical.

jakeweruvaE_7833

Weruva food prides itself on not being “mystery mush.” As they explain on their website: “We do not blend our ingredients into the meatloaf-style pate. We instead flake our protein cuts off the bone, and they are then hand placed into cans along with other food ingredients that may be in the formula. Our philosophy is ‘what you see is what you get.’ We want you to see and identify the quality of the ingredients that we list on the ingredient statement.” I do have to say, some of their food looks (and smells!) pretty good to me…and the cats love it, too.

jakeweruvaE_7807

jakeweruvaE_7808

Since I wasn’t opening any of the packets or tubes of food, the box took on a more immediate interest to Jake.

jakeweruvaE_7835

jakeweruvaE_7837

He really fell in love with this box, too. I guess Webster, Rudi and Vanessa gave it some extra good smells before they sent it off. Natick is only about 20 miles from Boston, so the box didn’t have to travel far.

jakeweruvaE_7838

It isn’t like we don’t have any other boxes lying about the place, but this box was special.

jakeweruvaE_7841

And the fact that it came with a food supply (which Jake diligently monitored, just in case they spontaneously burst open) only made it that much more attractive.

jakeangelweruvaE_7839

Perhaps a little too attractive.

jakeangelweruvaE_7840

Look at Jake’s face! I think he’s more concerned that Angel’s going to try to take away his box than he is about her taking the food!

angeljakeweruvaE_7836

“I didn’t want your stupid old box anyway,” Angel says as she stalks away.

jakeweruvaE_7846

angelweruvaE_7843

angelweruvaE_7844

Of course, we had to try some of the grain-free, all-meat treats…as you can see, they earned the Aby Housekeeping Seal of Approval!

Aby-a-Day – November 17: The Cat Scouts Cardwood Derby

The Cat Scouts is having their very first event – the Cardwood Derby! Each Cat Scout has to build their own Cardwood Derby race car. There were some rules, of course, such as at least 80% of the car must be constructed from a cardboard box, a video of the Cat Scout showing off your driving skills scores extra points, kits are not expressly prohibited, but since the entries will be judged on originality and craftsmanship, they will likely decrease the chances of winning, and the car need not roll, per se.

angelN4478

So, since kits were allowed – and the car didn’t necessarily have to be a car, Angel entered the fighter plane.

angelN4479

angelN4480

Like any good pilot, she examined her craft before takeoff.

angelN4484

It’s important to make sure everything is in good working order while you’re still on the ground.

angelN4486

angelN4487

Granted, Angel’s entry in the Cardwood Derby wasn’t made from scratch…but it is the only plane entered.

jakecardwoodderbyE_7426

jakecardwoodderbyE_7427

Jacoby, of course, wanted his car built from scratch. He picked out the main box himself.

cardwoodderbyE_7438

And he also wanted it to really roll.

cardwoodderbyE_7436

But the only wheels I could find were kind of bulky. I couldn’t really do much to incorporate them into a sleek-looking race car.

cardwoodderbyE_7440

It’s actually more of a tank.

cardwoodderbyE_7441

But it’s Boston Strong!

jakecardwoodderbyE_7446

And Jake liked it, which is the most important thing.

jakecardwoodderbyE_7448

When it was all finished, we took it out to the hallway to let her go.

jakecardwoodderbyE_7509

I attached Jake’s leash to the front and we ran it up and down the long carpeted corridor.

jakecardwoodderbyE_7517

Jake’s car was a bit wobbly, but it worked.

jakecardwoodderbyE_7451

We even ran into a neighbour while we were racing.

jakecardwoodderbyE_7453

She was very impressed with Jake’s car…and his Scouts uniform.

Check out Jake’s car in action! I don’t know who will win – there are some truly awesome entries – but it was a lot of fun. Building a Cardwood car isn’t as easy as it looks!

Aby-a-Day – November 12: “A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid” (Cartoon Tuesday)

All cats like boxes. That’s a pretty established fact, just ask the internet.

abycartoon98

But while normal cats do things, well…normally…Abys always take it up a notch.

(Click cartoon to embiggen, or you can view all cartoons in Slideshow mode on Flickr.)

Aby-a-Day – August 6: I could have been someone! (Cartoon Tuesday)

There’s one thing Maru has that other cats don’t.

abycartoon84

A human who keeps her video camera handy. My bad. Sorry, Jacoby.

Aby-a-Day – July 18: Pouncing Playground Bungalow

We went to Petco the other day and saw this cute Planet Petco Pouncing Playground Bungalow.

boxlabel_5309

It’s basically a fancy cardboard box with a scratcher.

boxlabel_5311

Except it has catnip and cute stickers to decorate it!

tessieboxtoy_5312

Tessie was the first to come check it out.

jaketessieboxtoy_5316

Jacoby read the instructions for me and made sure the catnip was fresh.

jakeboxtoy_5317

Then, it was time to start building!

jakeboxtoy_5320

Yes, Jake…of course you can help!

jakeboxtoy_5325

First, we built the base and put in the scratch pads…

jakeboxtoy_5326

…which Jake immediately tested to make sure they were up to code.

jakeangelboxtoy_5328

Okay, Jake. I think we’re good.

jakeangelboxtoy_5329

No, seriously, Jake. I think we’ve got this.

jakeboxtoy_5332

Next, we added the catnip to the scratch pads.

jaketessiieboxtoy_5333

jaketessiieboxtoy_5334

Jake and Tessie were responsible for making sure it was evenly distributed.

jaketessiieboxtoy_5337

They were very thorough.

jaketessiieboxtoy_5338

Jake even made sure the scratching still worked once the catnip was applied.

jaketessiieboxtoy_5341

Then the walls went up!

jakekylieboxtoy_5344

There’s still a little porch to scratch on outside the house.

jakeboxtoy_5345

Jake checked out the front door.

jakeboxtoy_5346

Yep, the scratchers still work. Good job, Jake!

jaketessiieboxtoy_5349

jakeboxtoy_5351

The bungalow was carefully inspected both inside and out.

jakeboxtoy_5353

Then the roof was raised!

angelboxtoy_5373

jakeboxtoy_5360

tessieboxtoyE_5359

jakekylietessboxtoy_5363

Everyone helped with decorating the little house with the stickers.

jakeboxtoy_5377

jakeboxtoy_5376

Jake tested out the scratcher on the porch again, just to make sure.

jaketessieboxtoyE_5391

It’s also good for just sitting on, as it turns out.

jakeangelboxtoyE_5399

jakeangelboxtoyE_5400

The bungalow isn’t perfect. The roof comes off a little too easily for my liking.

jakeangelboxtoyE_5402

jakeangelboxtoyE_5404

Angel didn’t seem to mind, though.

jakeangelboxtoyE_5406

Fire lazors! Yes, overall, I’d say this little house was a big hit. And I have to admit, it was a lot of fun to build!

Petco makes a castle and a skyscraper, too, and they even have a YouTube video about the set.
