Aby-a-Day – 25 Juni: Another Singapura family portrait (Photoshop Friday)

Ever since I did a family portrait of Izaak and his brothers Paulo and Keiko, I have wanted to do another one of the three.

brothersbrooklynbridge

I really wanted to do an old-timey Victorian-era type portrait, but I couldn’t find any backgrounds I liked…until I found this old photo of the Brooklyn Bridge when it was new.

brothersbrooklynbridgetexture

I added some texture and lighting effects…

brothersbrooklynbridgePNG

…merged the layers, added a little more texture, and here we are: the brothers in Brooklyn.

Aby-a-Day – 4 Juni: Paulo and some ‘Shop requests (Photoshop Friday)

Our friend Kinsey posted this photo to the “This Cat is PHOTOSHOPPED” facebook group and asked to have Paulo wearing a mask.

paulomask

Welp. That was easy. Then I had an idea.

paulomaskcovid

LOL why not, right?

paulosingamask

But then I got the idea to put my Singapura mask on Paulo.

paulosingamaskclose

Pretty cute, eh? Then…Kinsey asked for Paulo to be dressed up in a tux for prom.

paulotux

Considering I already have the perfect cat-sized tuxedo bib and tie, top hat, and cuffs with cufflinks…not a hard ask.

paulotuxclose

The shadows are already perfect, too. This was fun.

Aby-a-Day – 28 Maj: Family portrait (Photoshop Friday)

Our friend Kinsey shared some professional photos that were taken of Izaak’s brothers, Paulo and Keiko. I instantly knew what had to be done.

polishbrothers

A family portrait, of course! Since all three boys came from Poland, I chose a Polish flag as my background.

family portrait copy

Then I decided to set the scene…literally.

family portrait_framed

Finally, every portrait needs a frame, right? Can you tell who is who?

Aby-a-Day – 29 Oktober 2020: Dashiell’s family (Thursday Things)

This week, Meg sent me a bunch of photos of Dashiell and his littermates, along with photos of his mother, Anubis Evita Loca. Meg said, “She has never been shown; she is far too squirrely. However, she makes beautiful babies.” Okay…that squirrellyness might explain why Dash is so skittish!

babyEvita9216_n

The top photo is Evita as a kitten. This photo is a photo of her a week or two later.

babyEvita3545_n

I love the way baby Abys have that tuft of sticky-up hair between their ears at a certain age.

babyEvita5679_n

Here’s Evita at a few months old.

And here she is as a young adult. Dash does look a bit like her, don’t you think?

This is Dash and his littermates, Rami, brother, and Junie Purr (now GC, RW Anubis Junie Purr). They are one week old in this photo.

Meg didn’t send me any current photos of Junie, but here are a couple of her as a kitten.

Here we have Dash and his brother Rami. Rami is on the left and Dash is on the right.

Here’s Rami at one of his first vet visits.

And here he is as an adult.

Rami actually goes outside, too, on a leash.

Rami_7097_n

Isn’t he handsome?

Here is Dash as a teeny tiny kitten.

youngerDash_8231_n

He’s a bit older here.

youngDash_6656_n

And here, he’s a bit older still.

dashbedroom_2120

Finally, here is Dash today. I wish we could go to actual shows. Especially CFA shows (which are rare in this part of Europe). Evita needs just one more of her children to become a Grand to earn a Distinguished Merit title.

dashbedroom_2121

If I could show him, I am sure he would do wonderfully.

Aby-a-Day – 25 September 2020: Licking leads to biting (Friday Flashback)

Facebook has been reminding me a lot about Alfred and Logan lately. This one came up today.

logannap_0188

Look at little Logan, sleeping peacefully on the IKEA cat bed.

loganfreddy_0191

Suddenly, a wild Freddy appears!

loganfreddy_0194

Freddy uses licking.

loganfreddy_0195

It’s super effective!

loganfreddy_0196

Although, to his credit, Logan did get a pretty good chomp in on Freddy’s ear.

loganfreddy_0198

I also made a little video of the encounter; click on the image to watch it on Flickr.

Aby-a-Day – 21 Juni 2020: Izaak and his family (Singapura Sunday)

Today on Facebook, Anna (Izaak’s breeder) posted a photo of her newest litter of kittens.

Turns out, these kittens are Zak’s full siblings! Their father is Tinytoy Rus Mafoj*PL
and their mother is Angelina Minimali*PL.

Zak also has two older, famous brothers. Paolo and Keiko, five years older than Zak, are famous for their adventures. And they had another adventure (of sorts) today: Paolo and Keiko got neutered!

p+kcones

It wasn’t long before they escaped their Cones of Shame, but their human Kinsey sent me this video of them. Just click on the image to watch the video in another tab on Flickr.

It’s so cool to be part of such an illustrious family!

Aby-a-Day – 27 Juli: Izaak the brave (Singapura Saturday)

Izaak has two brave brothers and a daring neice, so he has bravery running through his veins.

zakAsbilC09039

And Zak is brave! The other day when we were outside, our upstairs neighbours were unpacking their car…and Zak just hopped right into Bruno’s doggy pen in the back! If ate dry food, he probably would have eaten that, too.

Aby-a-Day – 10 Mars: Alfred and Logan playing (Cinema Sunday)

I posted a few of the photos from this series back when I rebooted this blog, but in looking for photos to commemorate Logan’s birthday, I finished editing the rest of them.

freddytunnelC01673

These photos were taken three days after Logan came to live with us.

freddylogantunnelC01677

freddylogantunnelC01680

freddylogantunnelC01684

Alfred, coming from a litter of five, was excited to see a cat his age in our house. The adult cats mostly just hissed at him.

freddylogantunnelC01686

Logan was…less thrilled to meet Freddy.

freddylogantunnelC01687

He even managed to chase him off, despite being a month younger and tiny.

freddylogantunnelC01690

But then Logan attacked Freddy!

freddylogantunnelC01692

freddylogantunnelC01694

And Freddy was so excited! A playmate at last!

freddylogantunnelC01695

But Logan proved to be a tough adversary.

Oh, wait.

Looking just at these photos, you would never know they’d end up being so closely bonded.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take videos of this play session, but I got this one of Logan playing with Kalle and a wand toy.

And this one of Freddy and Logan playing in the spare bedroom, aka the “kitten room.” Both videos were made the first few days Logan came to live with us.

Aby-a-Day – 22 Februari: Brothers from another mother…and the little step brother who could (Friday Flashback)

I always think about Alfred and his “Brother from Another Mother,” Logan.

loganfreddycuddleC03834

These photos are from July 2017, a month after we introduced Logan to Freddy.

loganfreddycuddleC03839

They bonded after only a couple of days.

loganfreddycuddleC03843

loganfreddycuddleC03846

loganfreddycuddleC03849

But their bond was deep. I called them “Brothers from Another Mother.” But they really were.

loganfreddycuddleC03857

loganfreddycuddleC03859

loganfreddycuddleC03861

I mean, just look at them!

loganfreddycuddleC03864

Logan and Freddy were so attached to each other.

loganfreddycuddleC03878

loganfreddycuddleC03881

loganfreddycuddleC03884

loganfreddycuddleC03891

They were so in sync with each other, too. You can see how bonded they were from these photos, taken only a month after we introduced them.

loganfreddycuddleC03906

loganfreddycuddleC03909

One thing Freddy liked to do was hold Logan down to groom him.

zakfreddycuddleC05457

Whilst Izaak is not Logan, and it’s taken Freddy some time to accept Zak…

zakfreddycuddleC05462

…it seems that Freddy needs a Singapura brother to take care of and look after.

zakfreddycuddleC05468

It’s not the extreme “brothers from another mother” love that Freddy had with Logan, but…

zakfreddycuddleC05471

zakfreddycuddleC05473

zakfreddycuddleC05475

zakfreddycuddleC05476

…Zak seems to be an acceptable surrogate for Freddy’s Singapura fixation.

zakfreddycuddleC05479

At least, until Zak has had enough of Freddy’s “brotherly” love.

zakfreddycuddleC05483

I guess that’s the difference between Logan and Zak…Logan grew up with Big Brother Freddy, and Zak…didn’t. But he tolerates Freddy’s attention well. Enough.

Aby-a-Day – 29 December: Logan and Izaak (Singapura Saturday)

Logan and Izaak look very much alike in photos, and often I can’t tell who is who unless I look at the date the photo was taken.

loganfreddyjakenapC08453

These first two photos were taken 28 December 2017…so, this is Logan napping with Alfred and Jacoby.

zakfreddynap_5664

These next two, however…

zakfreddynap_5669

…these two were taken on 13 December 2018, so this is Zak and Freddy.

zakfreddyjakenap_5674

So…without looking at the Flickr details linked to the photos, can you tell how is who? Is this one Zak or Logan?

loganfreddynapC08510

How about this one?

zakfreddynap_5666

I know Freddy knows that Zak isn’t his “Brother from another Mother,” but he does seem to like having him as a cuddle buddy.

zakjakenapC04236

In some ways, Logan and Zak could not be more different. Logan was very agile and could often be found up high, on the tops of bookshelves and doors. He was like a little old man, soft-voiced but constantly muttering to himself. He wasn’t terribly food-oriented, and he wasn’t afraid of the big cats’ hisses and growls. And he was extremely fastidious, constantly grooming himself. Zak, on the other hand, can barely haul himself onto the kitchen counter (and often doesn’t make it). He meows at the top of his voice when he wants something or if I am in the bathroom with the door closed, and he is incredibly focused on food. He tries to sleep with the big cats, same as Logan did, but if they hiss or growl, he backs off and goes somewhere else. And while he keeps himself tidy, he isn’t constantly grooming himself the way Logan did. One of Logan’s “things” was to furiously lick his tailtip if you held it for him. Zak isn’t as concerned about his tail tip.

It just so funny how two cats can look so alike and have such different personalities.

Aby-a-Day – 9 December: A surprise encounter at the show (Cat Show Sunday)

chiädelkatten_5530

chiädelkatten_105208

On Saturday, there were four Singapuras entered in the show. Izaak is now old enough to start earning titles, and he was up against three of Stellan’s cats. He wasn’t nominated, but he was up against a Singa who won at the Scandinavian Winners Show last spring! Little SW IC S*Kustens Chi Sarà Con Te was the BIV (Best in Variety) Singa and nominated both days. She was even Best in Show on Saturday!

mistleädelkatten_5569

But on Sunday, a fifth Singapura was entered in the show! And not just any Singa, either…SE*Melur’s Mistle, Logan’s half brother and another kitten from Naina, the Singa Björn brought back to Sweden with him in 2016!

zakmistelädelkatten_111107

Of course, Zak and I had to go meet him and his human, Charlotte! Mistel lives in Norway now.

mistleädelkatten_5574

Even more interesting, Charlotte breeds Maine Coons. So it’s a cattery full of Maine Coons…

mistleädelkatten_5577

…and one Singapura. The smallest cat breed living with a pack of the largest cat breed. Apparently, Mistle holds his own. I am not surprised.

mistleädelkatten_112448

Mistel and Zak are both in Class 9, the Open class for unneutered cats over 10 months old. Mistel is about a month older than Zak, so he was judged first.

zakädelkatten_112543

zakcocoädelkatten_112534

Zak and I watched whilst we waited our turn.

zakädelkatten_112911

zakädelkatten_112936

When he got on the table, Zak really turned on the charm.

zakädelkatten_112940

I mean, he really turned it on!

He also made sure that the judge wrote only nice things about him.

zakädelkatten_5591

zakädelkatten_5593

He was quite helpful, as you can see.

zakädelkatten_5589

Because there were two Singas in the same class, only one could get the certificate. And, on Sunday, it was Zak who won the CAC (Certificat d’Aptitude au Championnat de Beauté). Mistel was Ex1. Yesterday, Zak had no Singa in his class, so he got his CAC by default. When he gets one more, he will be a Champion.

roryädelkatten_093246

Meanwhile, Lorelai was the only blue Aby in the show. She is still in the Junior class (she turns 10 months old tomorrow), so she still only got EX1s. Our next show in Örebro in January, she will also be competing as an adult.

roryädelkatten_092734

Rory wasn’t up for the nomination on Saturday at all, but on Sunday she really enchanted her judge.

rorybjornädelkatten_5603

She was up for the nomination with two adorable Devon Rexes.

devonädelkatten_5621

A little blue-silver and white tabby girl…

rorybjornädelkatten_5607

And a copper-eyed white girl.

rorybjornädelkatten_5604

The judge, Glenn Sjöbom, was truly torn. I swear, he took at least ten minutes to decide which of these girls to nominate. In the end, it was the white Devon…but he said that this was the hardest decision he’d had to make all weekend.

roryzakädelkatten_144127

All in all, despite not getting nominated, it was a fun weekend. Our friend Anna and Peter’s Aby Bonk earned his Supreme, and it was great seeing all our friends. And that’s really the point of the whole thing, isn’t it?

Other People’s Singas: Noodle the paddle boarder, Paolo the Brave and his brother, Keiko

This really awesome video of a Singapura paddle boarding with her human in the UK popped up on Facebook yesterday. Noodle and her human, Nigel, go paddle boarding regularly on rivers in Essex and Sussex. They even have an Instagram page.

But as cool as this story is, it gets cooler. Noodle (Singaneko Artemis) comes from a British cattery, and her father is Bakardi Minimali*PL (“Keiko”). Kinsey, the breeder, has also written two children’s books about Keiko and his littermate brother Paolo (Bolt Minimali*PL). I discovered – and bought – these books last year after we got Logan, delighted to find any books starring Singas.

zakmousieC00604

Of course, you know that our Izaak also comes from Minimali*PL. But if you look at Paolo’s, Keiko’s and Zak’s pedigrees, you’ll find that all three boys’ parents are Tinytoy Rus Mafoj*PL (father) and Angelina Minimali*PL (mother)…so Zak is Paolo and Keiko’s full brother, and Noodle is his neice! Paolo and Keiko are three years older than Zak…but how amazing is it to discover that Zak’s brothers are children’s book stars!? And his neice is a famous paddle boarder!? I guess Zak has a lot to live up to.

Aby-a-Day – 2 September: “Everyone knows that if you’ve got a brother, you’re going to fight” (Cinema Sunday)

While Alfred and Izaak will never have the relationship that Alfred and Logan had, they are still the two youngest male cats in the house. They may not be brothers from another mother…but they are brothers, nonetheless.

zakfreddywrassleC00774

And then, five minutes later…we had this. Boys.

Other People’s Singas: Izaak’s brother Joop the victorious (Super Singas)

While we were with Lorelai at her first show in Sweden, Izaak’s brother Joop was at the Wystawa Kotów Rasowych in Sopot, Poland.

I’m not sure exactly how the awards translate, but he did very well indeed, and I think this was his very first show, too. You can see him in action on the judging table

here.

Unlike CFA, when you win a Best in Show you get not only a rosette but also prizes – usually food and cat accessories.

Here is Joop and all his winnings. That trophy is bigger than he is!

And if you are wondering why we didn’t take Zak along with Rory to the show this past weekend, well, that’s because while he is registered in FIFe, he is registered as a Polish cat, not a Swedish cat. He needs to have his details entered into Sverak‘s database as my cat before I can enter him. So as soon as that happens…we’ll see if he can do as well as his littermate!

Aby-a-Day – 2 June: Logan’s last cat bed (Swedish Saturday)

When pets are cremated in Sweden, it seems the pet crematoriums return the ashes to you in a simple, pine box. This is how Björn received the ashes of first Olivia and then Pyret, and that’s how we got Logan back from the vet as well.

rorylogansashesC04934

Lorelai came to see what was left of the brother and show companion she will never get to meet.

rorylogansashesC04943

Bittersweet photo, isn’t it? Hang one, more where that came from.

rorylogansashesC04948

To my surprise, when I opened the box Logan’s ashes came in, they were just loose inside! Back in the States, you would get the ashes in a box, sure, but the ashes inside the box were in a plastic bag of some sort.

freddyrorylogansashesC04959

Alfred also came to investigate Logan’s loose ashes. Yeah, that’s the more bittersweet thing I mentioned earlier.

loganashesC05765

Of course, for Harri and Patrick, I had lovely urns made by Alex in Welderland, and while I love them, another would be too heavy and too expensive to ship from the States to Europe. Gun-Hee didn’t have so much as an urn as a “memorial box” which included a flask of his ashes along with other souvenirs of his short life. I looked online for cat urn options in Europe and eventually discovered Etsy seller 1st4Signs.

freddyloganashesC05766

It’s really beautiful. The box is oak, with an engraved slate top and a photo of Logan. Of course, Freddy was on hand to help me put his brother from another mother into his final cat bed.

freddyloganashesC05771

I poured Logan’s ashes into the fancy new box. They fit perfectly.

freddyloganashesC05779

Then we put the lid back on.

jakefreddycocologanashesC05791

jakefreddycocologanashesC05792

It fastens with two brass screws. Jacoby came to see what was going on while I was screwing the lid back on.

jakefreddycocologanashesC05795

Not sure how a screwdriver equals a possible meal, but all right…

freddyjakeloganashesC05808

There we are. Logan is in his final resting place.

freddyjakeloganashesC05811

Freddy and Jake say goodbye to Logan one last time.

jakeloganashesC05826

No Jake…this won’t be you for a very, very long time. I hope.

loganashesC05849

For now, Logan is on the windowsill near Björn’s computer underneath which Pyret loved to sleep, next to Pyret and Olivia’s ash-boxes. Eventually we’ll have everyone’s ashes on one shelf somewhere. It just seems so sad that the older we get, the more little boxes of ashes we collect.

(Also…and I am sorry it’s such a depressing post…but, happy birthday, Sherry!)

Aby-a-Day – 15 April: A post I never thought I’d be making this soon (Serious Sunday)

Logan joined StarClan yesterday around 17:20 in Jönköping. Alfred and I were with him at the end. He was killed by FIP, ten years after my first Abyssinian, Gun-Hee, was murdered by the same virus. Ten years of research, and we still lose our cats to this horrible disease.

I have a lot to process (and not just photos)…but I will tell the whole story over the next few days. But to summarise, after the judge at the Winners Show said she thought Logan was thin, I weighed him as soon as we got home. And yes, Logan had lost weight since the last time he’d been weighed (I weigh all the cats every other week, when I clip claws), so I took him to our vet here in Skövde. I called on Tuesday, and the first appointment we could get was on Friday. They ran blood tests, but we didn’t get any results until very late Monday night, and the rest of the results came in Tuesday afternoon. They said he needed to go to the nearest big animal hospital, which is in Jönköping, an hour train ride from Skövde. So on Wednesday, Logan was admitted for more tests, feeding and hydration, and a possible biopsy. For a while, we thought it might not be FIP, since he had enlarged lymph nodes and anemia, and didn’t show the classic signs of FIP, like the swollen belly that Gun-Hee had. But on Friday the 13th, after they opened his abdomen up to surgically biopsy his mesenteric lymph nodes, they found the tell-tale fluid in his abdomen. It was a jelly rather than free fluid, which is why is wasn’t so obviously FIP.

freddylogangoodbyeIMG_2971

So on Saturday, Freddy and I took the train to Jönköping to say goodbye to our friend. Phillippa the vet tech brought him into the room and Freddy went right over to him.

logangoodbyeIMG_2978

Then I got to hold him. I wore my Porg shirt because they always remind me of Logan.

freddylogangoodbyeIMG_2981

He didn’t like being held on his back, so I turned him over and Freddy was back to check on him.

freddylogangoodbyeIMG_2995

Freddy went back into the carrier, and the sweetest thing happened. Logan started squirming in my hands. I wasn’t sure what was wrong, but the tech exclaimed, “Oh! He wants to go into the carrier with Freddy!” And he did. I made a short video of the two of them (click the above image to view); Freddy hissed a little at Logan’s funny smell, but they cuddled together like they always have.

freddylogangoodbyeIMG_3023

Up until that moment, I thought I brought Freddy to say goodbye to help Freddy deal with the loss of his Brother From Another Mother. But bringing Freddy was as much – if not more – for Logan.

Turn up the volume…Logan was so happy to see Freddy and me he was purring! (Click image to play.) The tech was called away for an emergency, so we had a little more time together. Logan was so tired, though.

Finally, the tech returned and the sedation and final injection process began. We stayed with him until they confirmed he was really gone.

My heart has joined The Thousand, for my friend has stopped running today.

Goodbye, my little dollbaby. May StarClan light your path. May you find good hunting, swift running, and shelter when you sleep. There will soon be a new star in the night sky.

Abys in Need: TinyTim and BobCat in New Mexico

This may be the only time on record that I state publicly that I wish I lived closer to New Mexico.

tinytim and bobcat

Super sad story alert! “I have [been on this list] since Oct 2004 when I rescued my two wonderful Abys, TinyTim (a fawn) and BobCat (a ruddy/usual). They were littermates dropped off at a local shelter. My two little boys have become so much of my life. They are 8 years old, now.

I resently found out I have be relocating for my job, a 25+ hour trip with three flights, one lasting over 15 hours. My boys don’t like traveling in the car and I am worried they will not do well on this trip.

They have become so much a part of my life, but I am single and have to work. Is there anyone interested in adopting them and giving them a new home that keeps them together?

(TinyTim)

Stupid work, always getting in the way of real life! I’m guessing she’s moving out of the country, because I cannot think of anyplace in North America that requires three planes…and one leg lasting 15 hours!? Yikes. At least, I hope it’s that far away. Could you imagine changing planes three times and being on a 15 hour flight…and NOT leaving the continent? I mean, my flight to Tokyo via Chicago only took two planes and about 13 hours…and a lot of airlines won’t let you take two cats in the same carrier in cargo (the only way a single person can take two cats on a flight that I know of), and that was pre-9/11 (1998) and even then I had to cry on the phone because I flew in August (it was an overnight flight, so not hot).

If you can take in two lovely, neutered Aby boys, Contact Nancy Martin
