Aby-a-Day – 30 Maj 2020: Angel and the tree battle, round three (Silly Saturday)

Angel has sort of claimed the top of the cat tree as her own, but as I have previously posted, Izaak has been challenging her for control of the top. But a new challenger approaches: Lorelai. Seems she was napping on the top of the cat tree when Angel wanted to be up there.

angelrorytree_2624

But whilst Angel is attempting to deal with Rory, a complication presents itself…

angeldashrorytree_2625

…Dashiell got up on the tree, too.

angeldashrorytree_2633

I don’t think Dash realised what he was getting into.

angeldashrorytree_2636

angeldashrorytree_2646

I think he thought he was just getting on the cat tree to play with Angel and Rory.

angeldashrorytree_2656

I think he was wrong. Angel was determined to oust Rory from the top of the cat tree.

angelrorytree_2620

Using as much force as necessary.

angeldashrorytree_2660

angeldashrorytree_2658

Finally, Angel managed to evict Rory from the top of the cat tree.

angeldashrorytreeClose_2658

(A close-up of the ousting.)

angeldashrorytree_2661

Rory’s disinvitation made Dash abandon the tree-ship as well.

angeltree_2663

angeltree_2667

Angel was careful to make sure that all the younger cats were well away.

angeltree_2670

Angel remains the Queen of the Top of the Cat Tree.

Aby-a-Day – 18 April 2020: Izaak and Angel up a tree, round two (Silly Singapura Saturday)

As I posted last Sunday, Izaak and Angel’s cat tree battle has become an afternoon ritual.

zakangeltree_144207

Angel goes to hang out and chill on the top of the cat tree, Zak tries to unseat her, and she defends herself.

zakangeltreeClose_144207

And she is 100% capable of defending herself. I mean, look at that hiss! She may have only two teeth, but this girl is FIERCE!

zakangeltree_144208

zakangeltree_144209

Angel has no problems keeping Zak in his place.

zakangeltree_144210

Zak attempts to take over the top again…

zakangeltree_144216

…but look at Angel’s cocked arm. She’s more than ready for him.

zakangeltree_144242

Zak makes one last half-hearted feint at Angel…

zakangeltree_144245

…and nearly falls out of the hole in the bottom of the house.

zakangeltree_144618

zakangeltree_144619

zakangeltree_144621

…and…Zak out.

Aby-a-Day – 12 April 2020: Izaak and Angel up a tree (Silly Singapura Sunday)

It’s become something of an afternoon ritual.

angelzaktree_162940

angelzaktree_162941

Izaak and Angel have a cat tree battle.

angelzaktree_162957

angelzaktree_163000

Angel occupies the top spot, and Zak occupies the house.

angelzaktree_163002

And then Zak attempts to storm the castle and take over the top.

angelzaktree_163005

angelzaktree_163016

angelzaktree_163029

angelzaktree_163033

He has some…interesting moves…

angelzaktree_163035

angelzaktree_163037

He’s very stealthy…

angelzaktree_163044

Okay, that’s just plain…what is that, even? What is that meant to accomplish?

angelzaktree_163056

May as well settle in, Zak. You’re not going to knock Angel off her perch.

Aby-a-Day – 5 December: Wordless Wednesday (Sausage. Seriously. Sausage.)

zakDjurMshow_131124

Aby-a-Day – 2 December: Cat up a tree (Silly Singapura Cat Show Sunday)

One of the fun things about having a cat show in a pet store is, there’s plenty of cat trees to play with.

zakDjurMshow_5272

zakDjurMshow_5274

zakDjurMshow_5277

There was one right in front of Izaak’s cage.

zakDjurMshow_131240

He loved them and how tall they were…but he also really loved this little cubby.

zakDjurMshow_131246

The instructions were folded up inside, but that didn’t stop him from playing in there.

zakDjurMshow_5278

zakDjurMshow_5279

If anything, it gave Zak something to play with whilst he was in there.

zakDjurMshow_5282

zakDjurMshow_5283

zakDjurMshow_5284

I don’t exactly know what he was doing in there…chasing his tail, just spinning around…but he seemed to be having fun.

zakDjurMshow_5285

zakDjurMshow_5287

zakDjurMshow_5288

zakDjurMshow_5289

And then, after a round of spinning and rolling about…

zakDjurMshow_5291

…it was time to attack the post.

zakDjurMshow_131250

Zak loved it in there.

zakDjurMshow_131316

zakDjurMshow_131317

zakDjurMshow_131323

But eventually he started to look around at the rest of the cat tree.

zakDjurMshow_131329

zakDjurMshow_131414

Both Björn and I were taking photos of his adventures.

zakDjurMshow_131334

zakDjurMshow_131336

Zak seemed to notice that high shelf, and he started to get ambitious.

zakDjurMshow_131345

zakDjurMshow_131354

Zak’s not much of a climber at home – much less so than Logan was – but at DjurMagazinet he was fearless.

zakDjurMshow_131651

He even branched out onto the grey tree next to his brown one.

zakDjurMshow_131654

But he soon jumped back to his brown one.

nevamasqDjurMshow_5300

But what was really funny was, after Zak was done playing, the little Neva Masquarade in the cage next to ours went out to explore the cat tree…and was very interested in the smells Zak left behind.

Aby-a-Day – 27 July: Evolution of a Catio (Fashion Friday)

When I first moved here in 2016, Björn’s balcony was a rather Spartan affair.

jakebalconyIMG_5818

jakebalconyIMG_5819

There was only a wooden bench, a makeshift cat tree made from natural tree parts, a basket and…not much else.

jakebalconyIMG_5812

jakebalconyIMG_5813

jakebalconyIMG_5815

It was pretty barren. Once my things came from the States, we put my redwood burl table out there, and my floor-to-ceiling cat tree bumped Björn’s old cat tree out there as well. The balcony was open to the elements, so we couldn’t keep much else out there, but we put a tarp over the table, and it was fine out there. And so were the cats…until Jacoby taught himself to jump off the balcony. After that, we had to keep the balcony door closed until we could get it glassed in.

jakebalconyIMG_8248

Finally, May last year, we got the balcony glassed in. Jake was out there in a heartbeat.

pyretbalconyIMG_8433

So was Pyret. The basket on the bench was her favourite spot…

pyretbalconyC01735

…which is one reason we kept her body there until we could get her cremated.

angelbalconyIMG_8288

For a while after it was glassed in, we used it as storage for the chairs until we could get it organised.

angelbalconyIMG_8286

angelbalconyIMG_8287

Angel didn’t mind. She had sun and a cushy place to nap. She was good.

angelbalconyC09358

angelbalconyC09355

Even now, you can usually find her in one of the chairs on the balcony.

angelbalconyC09255

Either a chair, or the cubby in the cat tree.

fredbalconyC09359

Alfred…well, he tries to fit in there sometimes, too.

loganbalconytreeC04623

Logan also really loved the cubby.

loganbalconyIMG_2736

loganbalconyIMG_2740

Logan loved the balcony.

loganbalconyIMG_2887

He spent a lot of time out there in the sun before he died.

freddyjakebalconyC08917

Jake and Freddy love being out there, too…but they’re usually trying to work out a way to escape.

rorybalconyC08868

We got the basic layout of the balcony done last summer after the glass was installed, and we hung curtains and icicle and fairy lights, which actually give enough light to read by, but this year we have been focusing on really getting it set up to be a catio. I fell in love with this artificial pine tree at IKEA, and I found a reindeer hide for 125kr (around $14, about 1/10 what they should cost) which I love…but which sheds too much to live in the apartment. It looks great out on the balcony, though!

freddybalconyC08993

One of the biggest things we did this year is lay down wooden tiles.

freddybalconyC08908

Those tiles made a HUGE difference in the overall feel of the balcony. It feels warmer and more homey – more like a part of the house rather than “outside.” There was just one more thing we needed to do…and you’ll see what we did tomorrow!

Aby-a-Day – 14 July: “But that’s life. One long tunnel. ” (Silly Saturday)

Back in my old apartment in Somerville,I had this aswesome floor-to-ceiling cat tree from Drs Foster and Smith, and it was well-loved by Harri, Patrick, Tessie, and Gun-Hee…but especially Kylie.

kylie-withknitten

Specifically, the fleece tunnel that hangs from the first level platform.

kylie-loveknitten

Most cats want to go high, and eschew the low-hanging tunnel, but not Kylie.

kylie-hugknitten

At the time, Kylie had a “knitten,” a little kitten that looked like her. It was her favourite toy, and she, of course, took it with her into the tree-tunnel.

kylie-dangleknitten

kylie-biteknitten

“Hey! Come back here and enjoy this with me!”

But after Kylie was young, the tree went into storage, and no cat got to climb it until we moved to Sweden, but even once we set that old tree up in Björn’s apartment, literally no cat used that tunnel…until Lorelai showed up on the scene.

rorytreetunnelC05100

Rory discovered that tunnel and she owned it.
I know it’s not in focus, but this photo captures Rory’s joy within the tunnel.

rorytreetunnelC05102

“Yay! Tunnel!”

rorytreetunnelC05103

It’s so cute watching her loll about in that thing.

rorytreetunnelC05132

rorytreetunnelC05142

rorytreetunnelC05144

rorytreetunnelC05145

I wonder if it’s a kitten thing? An adult cat can easily fit in the tunnel, but none ever lie in it.

roryzaktreetunnelIMG_3709

When Izaak arrived, he tried to share the tunnel with Rory.

roryzaktreetunnelIMG_3710

It was a bit crowded in there for the pair of them (look at Rory’s back foot!), but they made it work.

roryzaktreetunnelIMG_3711

For a while.

roryzaktreetunnelIMG_3712

roryzaktreetunnelIMG_3713

roryzaktreetunnelIMG_3714

Then Zak started to sort of ooze out the backside of it.

rorytreetunnelIMG_3718

Pretty sure he was pushed…

rorytreetunnelIMG_3719

…because a certain little girl seemed awfully proud of herself once she had the tunnel all to herself again.

rorytreetunnelIMG_3720

“…What? I didn’t do anything. He wanted to get down!”

Aby-a-Day – 4 June: “Snazzy” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Snazzy.”

gunhee-everyone652

I have this very snazzy, super deluxe, floor-to-ceiling cat tree from Drs. Foster and Smith. I had it in the kitchen of my old apartment in Somerville, and Harri, Patrick, Tessie, Kylie and Gun-Hee all loved it.

trick-tongue

Patrick especially loved it.

funnytrick2

I mean, he really loved it.

tricknewtreebox

I got it in 2005 as a replacement for the older, blue one I’d brought with me from Atlanta, which was getting a little ragged. Patrick couldn’t wait for us to unpack it.

trick-tube

He even helped to assemble it.

trick-hurry

He could not even wait for it to be put together before he was climbing on it!

cattreemovingIMG_4837

Sadly, it wasn’t tall enough for the very high ceilings in the old condo, so when I moved out of my apartment in March 2009, the awesome tree went into storage.

angel3990

When I got Angel in 2008, I wasn’t spending much time at my old apartment although I still kept it for a few months after I married. I’m not sure if she has ever seen this cat tree (but she really loved the floor-to-ceiling cat tree my mom has at her house, and wasted no time climbing it). I know Jacoby never has, since it was put into storage before he was even born!

cattreemovingIMG_4848

But on Monday, it was packed up to go to Sweden.

cattreemovingIMG_4851

It was pretty amazing to watch the mover pack it up in paper.

cattreemovingIMG_4852

We decided not to take it apart, except for the very top, spring-loaded part.

cattreemovingIMG_4853

cattreemovingIMG_4854

cattreemovingIMG_4855

He was so fast! I couldn’t imagine wrapping up a cat tree in moving paper…but then, he’s a professional.

cattreemovingIMG_4857

So, here’s my snazzy cat tree, all packed up and ready to go. Next stop, Sweden!

Aby-a-Day – September 24: Angel up a wall

Angel has been spending a lot of time up on the wall lately.

angelwallC03555

I do worry a little because she’s not got the best depth perception and she’s a little clumsy (although not as clumsy as Jacoby).

angelwallC03556

But she seems to do okay. I don’t think she’s ever fallen off.

angelwallC03557

But she certainly does seem to take some chances!

angelwallC03558

Be careful up there, Angel!

angelwallC03559

Oh, so you DO listen!

angelwallC03560

Is that some sort of rude arm gesture?

angelwallC03561

Ah, yes…the old “looking cute” trick…

angelwallC03562

angelwallC03563

Wait…what?

angelwallC03564

I must go, my people need me. Or there’s food. Something.

Aby-a-Day – September 21: Angel and Mini-Jake (Miniature Monday)

We all know Angel isn’t Jacoby’s biggest fan. All he wants to do is play with her, and all she does is hiss at him. But what about a mini-Jake?

angel-minijakeC03526

Well…

angel-minijakeC03523

..Pretty much the same, but without the hissing. Angel sure knows how to cast some shade, though, doesn’t she?

Aby-a-Day – April 18: “Ball” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Ball.”

ballC07777

ballC07778

My husband brought home a HeliBall from Five Below the other day.

jakeballC07785

So of course I had to show it to the Abys.

ballC07790

ballC07809

ballC07825

jakeballC07854

It’s a pretty simple helicopter toy. It’s not even a remote control helicopter – you turn it on, it goes up and down until it crashes into something and then you turn it off and back on again and do it again. Still, Jacoby was pretty interested in it.

jakeballC07789

jakeballC07858

Especially when it crash-landed.

angelballC07959

angelkylieballC07960

angelkylieballC07961

Angel wanted to get a closer look at it, so she quickly hopped up the wallclimbers.

angelballC08004

From up there, she could get an eye-level view of the HeliBall.

jakeangelballC08075

Jake was quick to follow her up there.

jakeangelballC08090

jakeangelballC08111

jakeangelballC08043

The HeliBall is slightly controllable with your hands. It reacts to things beneath it and goes up when it senses a surface, like the floor or the palm of your hand. The Jake and Angel were fascinated by the flying ball.

jakeangelballC08157

However, before you run out and get one of these for yourself, I have to warn you, it’s not the safest toy on the planet. The box says “Ages 14+, so it’s not a kid’s toy. It also has no side-to-side control, just up and down. And if it hits you in the face…it hurts! Somehow, while I was taking photos of it, it managed to get between my camera and my face (I guess I thought the camera would protect me?), and the propellers hit me in the upper lip. It didn’t leave a mark or cut me, but damn, it stung. It also hit Jake in the side which startled him. And that was with two adults playing with it. If you do get one, just be careful with it. And wear glasses! Seriously, this thing could put an eye out.

Aby-a-Day – March 7: First day in the new territory (Friday Flashback)

Jacoby’s been the most relaxed and comfortable cat in the new place. He’d lived in the old apartment his entire life, but unlike the others, he doesn’t seem to miss anything about it.

jacoby2139

But then, he’s always been like that.

jacoby2133

The very first day we got him, he strolled into the apartment like he owned the place.

jacoby2132

He was 3½ months old and, even then, just fearless.

jake-toesnom

jake-toesnomnom

After a long car ride with his older brother, he came into a place with three older female cats and a universe of new smells and he just…didn’t really seem to be in the least bit daunted.

jacoby2127

After thoroughly exploring the entire place, twice, he settled down on his baby blanket from home and surveyed his new kingdom with a speculative gleam in his eye.

jakenewaptIMG_3818

He had that exact same look in his eyes on Tuesday after we were moved in. It seems that kittens, like children, don’t change all that much as they grow up.

Aby-a-Day – January 28: “Now you see it, now you don’t” (Cartoon Tuesday)

Moving must drive the cats crazy.

abycartoon109

They hate it when things move around…

jakeangeltroubleE_8012

Aby-a-Day – January 3: The new cat trees (Friday Flashback)

One thing about moving is, it makes you think about when you got stuff.

jaketessie3594

Like our cat trees.

angeljake-newtree3459

We got them in January, 2010. The first one we got on January 2 and the second was purchased on January 24, both at Petco. I don’t think they make these trees anymore.

jake-newtree3471

jake-newtree3477

Of course, Jacoby helped my husband build both of them.

jakenewtree3610

He and Angel also performed extensive quality control assessments.

jakeangel-newtree3543

Looks like they passed. I don’t think a day goes by that the cats don’t use them.

Aby-a-Day – December 17: “Don we now our gay apparel” (Cartoon Tuesday)

It’s fascinating to me how very alike Jacoby and Angel are in some things…

abycartoon103

…and how vastly different they are in others.

(Yeah, okay…and I wanted to draw Jake in his mistletoe hat.)

(Click cartoon to embiggen, or you can view all cartoons in Slideshow mode on Flickr.)

Aby-a-Day – December 15: Rockin’ Around the Christmas Cat Tree

We aren’t setting up the big Christmas tree this year, but, using one of our scratching posts, I built a sort of “Christmas cat tree” with our swirly light trees.

jakexmascattreeE_7702

It’s not as nice as the big tree, but it’s better than no decorations at all!

jakexmascattreeE_7696

I hope Jacoby isn’t too disappointed with this year’s holiday display.

jakerockinE_7714

I also found an adorable dancing Christmas tree at Macy’s. When you push a button on its foot, it lights up and dances while singing “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”

jakerockinE_7710

jakerockinE_7709

I thought the cats, especially Jake, would be enthralled by Bruce the Spruce.

As you can see by this video, however…well, I guess Jake’s a little too calm and used to weird things and sounds to really get excited over a singing and dancing tree. When I finally showed him the tree in action, it was anticlimactic, to say the least…

I was expecting something more like this!

Aby-a-Day – October 15: “He does it with a better grace, but I do it more natural” (Cartoon Tuesday)

I’ve noticed that these “Regular Cats vs Abys” cartoons seem to have the Abyssinians coming off as superior, but that’s not necessarily the case. Abys aren’t better or worse than other cats, per se…they’re just different.

abycartoon94

Abys have been some of the most clumsy, awkward cats I’ve ever known.

(Click cartoon to embiggen, or you can view all cartoons in Slideshow mode on Flickr.)
