Catalina hunts with Star Clan…and now, Jacoby is an orphan

I have the saddest of sad news to share. Last night, Sherry messaged me from her vetrinarian’s office. She was there with Catalina, Jacoby and Dillin’s mother. Catalina had painful cancer in her lower jaw which made it difficult for her to eat.

Ch. Instincts Santa Catalina of Pellburn was only 11 years old…just two years older than Jake!

I never met Catalina in person, but I know she was always a wonderful mother and she had many wonderful kittens. Here is a video Sherry made of Catalina with one of her litters.

My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend stopped running today.

Aby-a-Day – 7 May: “Mum” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Mum.” Remember, both Jacoby and Gun-Hee were Canadian born and bred. So they both have mums.

Here is Gun-Hee with his mum, Amber, and his siblings.

And here is Jake with his mum, Catalina, and his siblings.

Both of these photos were taken by Sherry, for which I am eternally grateful. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers…human, feline, and mixed-species.

Aby-a-Day – April 12: Mighty oaks from tiny acorns grow (Friday Flashback)

Four years ago Sunday, a little force of nature was born.

(I wonder which one he is?)

He was a handful right from the start!

He had a brother and sister and, apparently, an innate understanding of how to pose for a camera.

Sometimes I wonder if he misses his littermates.

They were really close.

Jake was always precocious.

He was the first of his litter to discover catnip!

He was always going to be my kitten. Sherry (who took all of the above photos and sent them to me before Jake came to live with us) must have told him so every day.

Because as soon as he met me, he decided I was his human, too.

Aby-a-Day – May 11: Happy Mother’s Day (Friday Flashback)

Meeting Chris Giammarinaro, the breeder of Jacoby’s mother Catalina and co-breeder of Jacoby himself, was one of the best parts of the cat show last weekend. We chatted for about five seconds, and as soon as she realised who I was and where Jake came from, she said, “Oh, we’re related!” At one point during the show, she studied Jake for a moment and then commented, “You know, he really does look like his mother.”

I thought that was interesting. I’ve always heard that Jake bears a strong resemblance to his father, Scar, but this was the first time anyone said he looked like his mother.

Of course, I’ve not met Catalina in person yet. I did get to meet Scar, though, more than once.

(Scar is #122 in this photo)

Of course, Jake has other “moms,” too. Tessie, our only cat who has had kittens of her own, frequently mothers him.

And he loves it, too.

Kylie is more of an aunt or a big sister to him.

But that’s important, too.

Angel was his Abyssinian role model when he was a kitten.

And of course, he decided I was his “mommy” right from the start!

I never met Gun-Hee’s mother Amber, either…but Sherry took this incredible photo of her with Gun-Hee and his littermates.

This is the image I think of when I think of “Mother’s Day.” This photo is so lovely.

Aby-a-Day – April 13: How can today be unlucky? (Friday Flashback)

Three years ago tomorrow, three little kittens were born.

That’s right! Jacoby’s birthday is tomorrow!

Look at the tiny toes!

Here they are with their mom, Instincts Santa Catalina. Sadly, their father, Scar, died before they were born.

There were two boys and one girl.

Sherry picked Jacoby out just for me.

His brother Dillin is a Grand Champion who has sired several kittens. His sister Scarlett, sadly, died from Feline Leukemia.

This is Jake and Scarlett (Jake’s the one on the right, using his sister as a pillow…of course) together. I would really like to go up to New Brunswick to go to a cat show and hang out with Sherry and Hinka and Kim. I wonder if Jake would recognise his littermate, brothers and mother?

If you’re in the market for an Aby kitten…

…I happen to know where you can get an AWESOME one!

Sherry, Jacoby’s breeder, sent me an email today: I have some kittens available, 3 Ruddy boys and 1 Red boy if you know of anyone who might be interested. They were born Feb. 9.

They’re about the same age Jake was when I got him. And, oh, they are so cute!

The little ruddy guy off on his own nomming his paw reminds me so much of Jake…and the little red guy is so sleepy, he’s all, “Dude…I’m trying to sleep, here…Du…hey! Tail!”

Four little boycats, the grandsons of Scar…and, tangentally, it means that there’s a good chance that Jake carries Red since Dillin does. If you’re interested, or know anybody who is, I can vouch for their personalities! 🙂
