Aby-a-Day – 7 Juni: A nice day outside (Hipstamatic Monday)

The other day I took Alfred, Lorelai and Izaak outside for a little romp.

hipstarory2

I let Rory go out offleash, but I had it with me just in case she decided to be naughty. She was happy to jump into the tall grass on the hill.

hipstazak3

hipstazak4

Meanwhile, Zak investigated the big tree.

hipstamarkis5

Later on, we made two discoveries: Markis, and catmip growing in the grilling area! Not sure how we never noticed it before. Maybe it’s new.

hipstamarkis6

I wouldn’t have noticed it if it hadn’t been for Markis.

hipstamarkiszak7

Zak is so funny…he really wants to be friends with Markis.

hipstafreddyboys8

We also ran into the neighbour boy who loves Freddy. Freddy was sweet enough to let the boy pick him up, and the boy was thrilled. He knows all their names and calls out to them, it’s so cute.

Aby-a-Day – 30 Juni: A memory of Jacoby (Cinema Sunday)

Today’s photos and video were not really ever going to be posted. I didn’t think that they were really good enough. But time changes photos, did you know that? What seems like a crap photo today can turn into a treasured memory with time. This is back from February, when Meg sent me a package that included some pretty superb catnip toys.

jakezakcatnippaper_6189

Jacoby took an interest in the paper the toys were wrapped in. Izaak came to see what was so interesting…he didn’t see it.

jakecatnippaper_6191

And when I say Jake was “interested”…

jakecatnippaper_6192

…I mean, he was really interested in it.

It was so funny that I made a video to show Meg. But now, I want to share it with everyone. Jake was such a goof.

Aby-a-Day – 23 Juni: “Have you ever held a snake? They are so strong. You can see why there are so many myths about them: they are unlike any other creature” (Silly Singapura Cinema Sunday)

You may recall a few months ago, I had bought some catnip snakes on Etsy. I gave one to “everybody,” which Izaak promptly claimed, and then put one away for Jacoby’s birthday…which never happened.

zaksnake_7501

The other day, whilst tidying up my clothes cupboard, I happened to find Jake’s green birthday snake. I had forgotten about it.

zakrorysnake_7502

So, I called Zak to come and play with it.

zakrorysnake_7503

He was all over that action.

zakrorysnake_7504

Lorelai wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

zakrorysnake_7505

zakrorysnake_7508

Zak was not about to share his new toy.

zaksnake_7509

One of Zak’s little quirks is, he loves to roll around on the entryway rugs. I have no idea why, but he does it almost every day…I just haven’t captured it on camera yet.

zaksnake_7510

zaksnake_7511

zaksnake_7512

Apparently, rolling about on the rug is much improved with a catnip snake.

zaksnake_7513

He really likes this snake!

When I posted about the first snake, I lamented not catching it on video. So this time, I made sure to sort that. Here’s Zak in action with Jake’s snake.

Aby-a-Day – 24 June: “The strangeness will wear off” (Silly Sunday)

So the last few days, I have had a lot of word-heavy, photo-light posts.

freddypollackIMG_3519

So I think we both need a little break.

freddypollackIMG_3520

So here is Alfred.

freddypollackIMG_3521

Going crazy.

freddypollackIMG_3522

With a Jackson Pollack catnip kicker toy.

freddypollackIMG_3523

You’re welcome.

Aby-a-Day – November 13: Baby wrecking ball (Friday Flashback)

Jacoby’s nickname is Rivningskula, which is “Wrecking ball” in Swedish.

catnip<

His clumsy brand of destructiveness started at a young age, as evidenced by this video Sherry made before he cam to live with me.

scarskittens

That is so obviously Jake, isn't it?

Aby-a-Day – October 22: Nip Kicker

At the NEMO show, my friend Donna was actually vending. She makes and sells all sorts of awesome stuff: jewelry, scarves, jackets…and cat toys.

NEMOjakenipIMG_0398 1

She brought Jacoby a handmade kicker stick stuffed with homegrown catnip.

NEMOjakenipIMG_0400 1

NEMOjakenipIMG_0405 1

And our Jakey loooooves catnip!

NEMOjakenipIMG_0408 1

He was instantly intrigued.

NEMOjakenipIMG_0411

He started licking it. That’s when you know he really likes it.

NEMOjakenipIMG_0413

It started to try to escape, so Jake had to show it who was boss and hold it down with his paw.

NEMOjakenipIMG_0414

Oh, yeah…that’s good nip, all right!

Aby-a-Day – January 5: Nip silliness (Hipstamatic Monday)

This is something Tessie does more than Jacoby, so I was kind of thrilled to catch him doing it.

hipstajakenip1

This is a little catnip pizza slice that I got at the World Show. I got each kitty a different “flavour” of pizza, and apparently they are filled with some very potent nip. At least, Jake liked it more than than the Kit-Tea bag, the IKEA rat filled with nip, or the catnip candy cane.

hipstajakenip2

So much so that he did the “rub his head and roll” move on his slice of nipperoni.

Aby-a-Day – August 7: This is your cat on nip.

Abyfriend Wendy sent me a birthday package, but the best gift was a Yeowww! catnip fish.

jakenipIMG_5328

It also just happened to arrive on Jacoby’s “gotcha” day, so I think he was expecting something in there for him.

jakenipIMG_5329

jakenipIMG_5331

He may be a mature five year old now, but he’s not above rolling around on the floor with a toy now and again.

jakenipIMG_5332

He started out playing with it on the S-curve scratcher…

jakenipIMG_5333

…but it managed to get away from him.

jakenipIMG_5335

Luckily, Jake was able to recapture it.

jakenipIMG_5337

jakenipIMG_5338

He certainly gave it a good licking.

jakenipIMG_5340

jakenipIMG_5341

jakenipIMG_5343

Yep. A really good licking.

jakenipIMG_5344

I love the look Jake gets on his face when he’s nipped out.

jakenipIMG_5345

I really wonder what they think about when they play with a catnip toy.

jakenipIMG_5346

jakenipIMG_5348

jakenipIMG_5349

I never understand the whole “rubbing the toy on the head” thing, though…what’s that about?

jakenipIMG_5350

Jake’s not the only one who does it. Kylie and Tessie, do, too, and Patrick was the king of rubbing his toys on his head.

jakenipIMG_5353

jakenipIMG_5354

jakenipIMG_5359

This must be some seriously good catnip!

jakenipIMG_5360

I mean, look at this face.

jakenipIMG_5362

jakenipIMG_5364

jakenipIMG_5366

There was also some great Aby grabby hand action during this battle with the catnip fishy.

jakenipIMG_5367

jakenipIMG_5368

He was having so much fun.

jakenipIMG_5369

The longer Jake played with it, however, the stronger it seemed to become. It was putting up quite the fight!

jakenipIMG_5370

Whoops! It got away again!

Aby-a-Day – June 30 – Freshly minted (Hipstamatic Monday)

In some of the parks along the Greenway, there are lovely gardens filled with a variety of plants.

hipstajakecatmint2

hipstajakecatmint3

The list is quite extensive, and includes both local and exotic flora.

hipstajakecatmint4

hipstajakecatmint5

But there’s one particular fragrant herb that is of special interest to Jacoby…

hipstajakecatmint6

hipstajakecatmint7

…Catmint!

hipstajakecatmint8

hipstajakecatmint9

There are actually six different varieties of catmint planted in various places along the Greenway, but the type I usually find is either Nepeta “Joanna Reed” or Nepeta “Little Trudy.”

hipstajakecatmint10

hipstajakecatmint11

I think this type was the “Little Trudy” variety because of the purple flowers.

hipstajakecatmint12

hipstajakecatmint13

Whatever type it is, Jake certainly seems to like it!

Aby-a-Day – June 5: Searching High and Low

As a general rule, when you are looking for Jacoby, you look up.

jakecatnipE_0741

jakecatnipE_0743

jakecatnipE_0744

jakecatnipE_0747

jakecatnipE_0748

That is, unless he’s busy rolling around on the floor with a catnip teabag. The corollary to this rule is when you’re looking for Angel, look down.

angelwallclimberE_0761

angelwallclimberE_0763

angelwallclimberE_0764

That is, unless she’s up on the wall watching Jake roll around on the floor.

Aby-a-Day – September 11: Wordless Wednesday (It’s for medicinal purposes!)

angelmjsnipE_6169

Aby-a-Day – September 8: Catnip Crime Scene Investigation

Last night I went to the CFF Annual Awards Banquet with Meg. Her kitten Nubia Malaika Jamaica (“MJ” for short) was Best Kitten for the 2012-2013 season.

cff-mjC07760

It’s traditional for the owner of the best kitten, cat, alter and HHP to give out little favours to everyone at the banquet, and because of MJ’s name, Meg handed out little nickle bags of premium catnip. I created the logo:

mjs-mj_logo yellow

Of course, Meg gave me some of this primo blend of nip. This morning, I went to get it out of my bag to share it with the cats, only to discover this:

mjsnipE_6082

mjsnipE_6086

mjsnipE_6074

mjsnipE_6078

Catnip was everywhere! All over the inside of my bag…all over the floor…

mjsnipE_6073

mjsnipE_6070

…and, upon closer investigation (good thing I watch a lot of CSI), I discovered that someone had chewed a hole in the Ziploc bag during the night. But who?

jakemjsnipE_6089

I brought in a likely suspect for questioning.

jakemjsnipE_6092

He appeared to be guilty from the start, but of course I had to follow the evidence.

jakemjsnipE_6095

The suspect was unrepentant.

jakemjsnipE_6102

Oh, he tried to look innocent…

jakemjsnipE_6120

…but guilt was all over his face.

jaketessiemjsnipE_6149

jakekylietessiemjsnipE_6157

jakekylietessiemjsnipE_6158

He gave up his accomplices pretty quickly, too.

angelmjsnipE_6164

However, we are still on the lookout for the buyer who’s apparently the brains behind the whole operation. Any information on this unknown individual, who is currently still at large, would be greatly appreciated.

Heads will roll!

I just had to share this with you all. Abyfriend Mycrobe, who made the wonderful catnip sampler I posted about this week, just listed a fabulous new creation: A Catnip Abyssinian Head!

How great is this? I love the description, too: Is it an Abyssinian cat or is it a mutant rabbit? You decide! Well, I say it’s an Aby, and I say it’s awesome!

Aby-a-Day – February 16: Life is like a box of catnip chocolates

Thanks to Moderncat, the kitties got a marvelous treat for Valentine’s Day this year: Felted wool catnip candy from Etsy seller Mycrobe!

jakeangelvalentinesN9171

You saw Jake with the box yesterday; it was tied up in strands of green, purple, pink and red yarn for each of my four Valentines.

jakevalentinesN9168

jakevalentinesN9167

Jacoby thought the box was his present. He was having a pretty good time just playing with that; I guess he could smell the catnip right through the cardboard.

jaketessievalentinesN9177

Once it was open, it was even better…although Tessie came and stuck her nose in before Jake could.

jaketessievalentinesN9178

You can see Jake’s annoyance; I think he is thinking, “What would Sparkle do?”

jaketessievalentinesN9179

That’s right, Jake! Take back the catnip!

jakevalentinesN9206

Jake really liked his minty-green piece.

angelvalentinesN9182

Angel was intrigued as well.

angelvalentinesN9184

angelvalentinesN9185

She seemed to really enjoy her little purple-topped piece.

tessievalentinesN9176

Tessie wanted all the pieces, but only the red one was hers. I love the little “sampler guide” that came inside the box (they’re all labelled as “catnip”)!

kylievalentinesN9191

kylievalentinesN9193

kylievalentinesN9194

Kylie loved her little pink chocolate…

kylietessvalentinesN9188

…So much so that Tessie decided she wanted that one instead of her own, because obviously Kylie’s piece was better!

kylievalentinesN9197

Kylie was very protective of her Valentine, however, and managed to keep Tessie away from it.

And if you want to have some catnip candy fun, don’t despair! Valentine’s Day may be over, but there’s still Purim, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter to look forward to!

Aby-a-Day – February 15: Wordless Wednesday (Sweets for the sweet)

jakevalentinesN9162

Aby-a-Day – Day 363 of 365

Jacoby also enjoyed his catnip duck sauce packet.

jakexmasdayN1163

He licked it until, as Steve Martin so delicately said once upon a time, it had cat spit all over it.

jakexmasdayN1146

I caught him licking the hot mustard packet, too. “What? If I lick them, they’re mine, right?”

tessiexmasdayN1159

I don’t think that trick works on Tessie, Jake.

tessiexmasdayN1158

Or did you just not want to lick the squirting hot sauce?

Aby-a-Day – Day 362 of 365

Jacoby got a fresh plate of his favourite crispy catnip bacon for Christmas…

jakexmasdayN1144

“Hey c’mon, they’re in a ziploc bag! Somebody open it! Someone with thumbs!”

angelxmasdayN1245

Angel, however, preferred the Big Daddy.

Aby-a-Day – Day 149 of 364

The feline reaction to catnip is genetic and the trait is governed by a dominant gene. Abyssinians, as a breed, have a very small genepool and are therefore not terribly genetically diverse, so it’s no surprise that the Abys were so captvated by the fresh catmint. While they were, by far, the most impressed with the catmint, Tessie was also pretty fascinated by it.

jaketessiecatmintN3426

Kylie, however, took one sniff and wanted nothing whatsoever to do with it.
She usually does like regular dried catnip, so this was an interesting reaction.

jakekyliecatmintN3391

Look at those ears! “More for me,” says Jacoby.

catmintN3318

And, in case you were wondering, this is what catmint
looks like when it’s not being nommed by kitties.

Aby-a-Day – Day 148 of 364

Angel was also very intrigued by the fresh catmint I brought home.

jakeangelcatmintN3451

Sneaking a sniff when Jake wasn’t looking.

jakeangelcatmintN3455

It’s whisker-licking good!

angelcatmintN3417

Enjoying the bouquet like a true connoisseur.

angelcatmintN3404

She actually dragged this piece away to enjoy it in peace.

jakeangelcatmint

Jake’s all, “Waitaminute, something’s missing!”
