Aby-a-Day – 22 Juni 2020: Izaak and the blanket (Mischievous Monday)

The other day when we went outside, one of our neighbours had left a blanket under a tree. We picked it up and hung it on the rug beating frame. There was a bit of a breeze, and the blanket had a fringe, so Izaak started playing with it.

Or attacking it. It’s open to interpretation.

zakblanket_3271

Sometimes I forget that Zak is only two years old…Logan was such a little old man, even though he only lived 13 months, I am always surprised at how playful Zak is.

zakblanket_3271close

Look at that concentration. That blanket is going to regret its life choices.

zakblanket_3273

It was so much fun watching him “hunt” the blanket.

zakblanket_3274

zakblanket_3274close

Bite! Bite! Bite!

zakblanket_3275

It’s amazing how much fun cats can have with ordinary household objects.

zakblanket_3276

zakblanket_3277

It was funny that he used his mouth more than his hands. I think Abys would be more handsy and less mouthy.

zakblanket_3279

…And just like that, Zak was done.

Aby-a-Day – 20 Mars 2020: Toothy Towels (Fashion Friday)

This was back in 2017, but Björn found the cutest embroidered towels in the That’s Sew Creative shop on Etsy.

Just look at these cute designs…and don’t they look like Abys? We had been using my Yoga Cat towel on the tub, but the minute I saw these, I knew we had to have them.

AbytowelBjorn

I had only two requirements…we had to have dark grey towels, and her machine needed to be able to make the Ö in Björn. Which, as you can see, she could do.

AbytowelKoshka

Here’s mine. I love the bow on the tail. They make me smile every time I go into the bathroom.

freddybathroom

But are they Abyssinians?

Alfred seems to think so.

Aby-a-Day – January 29: The Cat From Outer Space (Cartoon Tuesday)

Just because I can’t get Jacoby to ride the Roomba in real life doesn’t mean I can’t do a cartoon about him riding it. That’s the beauty of cartoons! And if he ever does ride the Roomba, I’m pretty sure this is exactly the sort of thing he’d do.

Aby-a-Day – December 30: I like to Roomba, Roomba, Roomba

Every year, the house gets a Christmas present. This year, it was so large it needed to be wrapped in two of those giant blue bags you get from IKEA!

jakeroombaE_1814

jakeroombaE_1816

Jacoby was very interested in this mysterious package!

jakeroombaE_1826

He was also a little miffed when we didn’t open it right away so he could see what was inside.

jakeroombaE_1823

“HEY!!! Will someone unwrap this, please!? I’m dyin’ over here!”

jakeroombaE_2037

And look what it was! An iRobot Pet Series 562 Roomba!

jakeroombaE_2040

jakeroombaE_2041

Jake was, if anything, more interested in this new machine out of the box than he was when it was still boxed up!

jakeroombaE_2045

He examined it thoroughly, as only an Aby can.

jakeroombaE_2050

He gave it far more than the third degree (There is a fifth degree, beyond that which is known to man…you’ve just crossed over into The Aby Zone).

jakeroombaE_2052

He practically did handstands trying to look at the Roomba’s undercarriage!

jakeroombaIMG_2063

However, when the Roomba was fully charged and started doing its job, Jake wasn’t quite as fearless as he usually is.

jakeroombaIMG_2064

In general, I’ve found that Abys aren’t typically afraid of vacuum cleaners; they seem less intimidated by them than the other cats are. Even Angel holds her ground against a running vacuum.

jakeroombaIMG_2065

It must be the fact that it is self-propelling, rather than being moved by a human.

jakeroombaIMG_2066

The way it swept around the kitchen seemed to unnerve Jake somewhat…and Jake is not a cat who unnerves easily. It was interesting to watch.

jakeroombaIMG_2067

jakeroombaIMG_2070

And now, the $64,000 question, which I know you’re all dying to know: “Did Jake ride the Roomba?”

jakeroombaIMG_2074

And, sadly, while there are cats who love riding Roombas, Jake does not seem to want to be one of those cats.

jakeroombaIMG_2075

(And, yes, I was a little disappointed…I had high hopes of a “Jake and the Roomba” video, if I am to be completely honest.)

jakeroombaIMG_2076

Finally, Jake decided the safest place to watch the Roomba was up off the floor where it couldn’t get him.

jakeroombaIMG_2077

I guess it’ll take some getting used to. This should be interesting!

Aby-a-Day – July 5: “Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d”

We got an order of Omaha Steaks the other day. If you’ve ever ordered from them, you know the meat is packaged with dry ice. Well, once you open the styrofoam box and put away the meat, you have the dry ice to deal with.

jakedryiceN1021

My husband put it in the sink. Then he ran water over it to make it melt faster. The end result was pretty spectacular.

jakedryiceN1022

At least, I think Jacoby was impressed.

Aby-a-Day – June 19: Think Outside the Box (Cartoon Tuesday)

I’m sure this is what Jacoby’s thinking when he’s playing with a box.

abycartoon29

I literally thought of this cartoon today while at lunch. It may be the fastest concept-to-blog cartoon yet.

Aby-a-Day – April 20: Bring in the Fun, Bring in the Toys! (Friday Flashback)

On one of the Aby lists, Hinka Chapman shared the following quote, said to her by one of her pet owners:

“Where there is no fun, Abys will create their own fun!”

Jake-funtimes

Jake-yeah-so

Yep…sounds about right!

jacoby2505

Jacoby has always had a fascination with plastic shopping bags.

jakecartN6826

jakecartN6817

He doesn’t seem to be outgrowing it, either. We have to hide bags from him because he chews the handles apart and he also gnaws holes in them, making them pretty useless for scooping the cat box (which is the reason we don’t always use more “green” shopping bags – if we did, we’d have nowhere to put the poop).

You may recall this documentary on what happens when Jake gets a hold of a bag…

Aby-a-Day – December 12: Shopping really is Jacoby’s bag, baby (Hipstamatic Monday)

It’s funny how festive shopping bags can be at Christmas time.

hipstajakeIMG_5747

Even the slightest hint of “winter” gives an ordinary bag that holiday mood.

hipstajakeIMG_5748

Just add cat, and it’s almost a Christmas card!

hipstajakeIMG_5744

Especially if the magic of Hipstamatic adds, say, a red filter.

hipstajakeIMG_5745

Or a weathered look, recalling Christmases of yore. This could be a photo of my parents’ Abyssinian…well, if my parents had had an Abyssinian, and if there had been Ann Taylor Loft stores back then, but you know what I mean.

I really should get some rubber stamps made…

I had the cats sign my husband’s birthday card using a brown pigment ink stamp pad I got at Paper Source. Kylie and Tessie still have ink on their paws, despite my trying to clean them. I suppose it was rather breedist of me to use Aby-friendly brown ink, wasn’t it?

bdaycard

Can you tell whose paw is whose? It seems super obvious to me…

(In case you were wondering, here’s the outside; it’s a Hallmark Micheal Scott birthWHOLEday card!)

Aby-a-Day – Day 266 of 365

As I’ve mentioned, we are currently redecorating and reorganising our apartment (and any dishevelment you may notice in the backgrounds of your Daily Aby photos is utterly and completely due to this activity). A couple of weekends ago, we built some tall IKEA bookshelves, and I caught Angel playing with a piece of plastic while my husband did his handyman things…

Her eye is as subtly retouched as I could manage. It’s hard to cover her eyeshine because it’s red and doesn’t stay within the pupils because of the spots on her cornea.

If you look closely at these last three, you can see the little piece of plastic she’s playing with in her mouth.

And if you look very closely at this last photo, you can see she’s putting it down on the blanket so she can play with it closer to Dad.

Aby-a-Day – Day 123 of 365

Tonight, we went to Game 2 of the Bruins-Flyers Eastern Conference semifinal. It was an awesome game (and not just because we won), but one of the highlights was the bright yellow rally towels they gave out to the fans.

Of course, the first thing I did upon getting home was put the towel on Jacoby.

jakebruinN3246
A lot of cats won’t let you put a face cloth on their back, cool logo or not.

jakebruinN3243
A lot of cats would try to convince you their backs were broken from the weight of the heavy, heavy towel. But not our Jake. In fact, Angel is quite admiring of Jake’s blanket.

jakebruinN3241
Jacoby might be named for a Red Sox player, but he still bleeds black and gold.
