Aby-a-Day – June 20: “Hop” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Hop.”

For some reason, one of Angel’s “safe spots” is the shelf underneath an old 1940’s coffee table I have.

I really don’t know why she likes it. It’s not high, it’s not especially protected or defensible, and it’s not soft and comfortable.

Still, if she’s being bullied by Tessie or harassed by Jacoby, she hops onto that shelf and all is right with the world as far as she’s concerned.

Aby-a-Day – November 13: The vast unexplored frontier of under the bed

We have dozens of good napping spots in our new apartment. But what’s the best place of all? The one place you’re not allowed to go, of course!

And for Jacoby, that forbidden frontier is the right-hand drawer under our bed.

It’s hard to open from the front, because my bedside table is next to it, so we don’t keep stuff we need to get at in that drawer. And there’s just enough room for a naughty Abyssinian to fit.

This weekend, my husband rearranged the boxes under the bed to make them cat-proof on the open side where there are no drawers. Eventually we’re planning to put some plywood there to cover it properly, but for now, boxes will work to keep Jake from hiding under the bed in general, and in that one drawer especially.

Because when Jake does get in there, it’s really hard to get him out unless he wants to come out.

So, naturally, we ply him with delicious treats he doesn’t usually get to have because of his UT issue.

He wants to get the treat without leaving his hideout. But oh, those crafty humans have placed it just out of reach…

“C’mon Jakey…don’t you want it? Don’t you want the treeeeeeeat?”

Oh, he wants it, all right.

He just wants it without having to leave his lair.

He’s no fool…he knows that if he comes out to get the treat, we’ll grab him and block up the hole and he won’t be able to get back into his fort.

And of course, he’s absolutely, 100% correct. That’s exactly our plan.

Eventually, the siren song of the tasty treat proves to be too much for our hero, and he succumbs to its seduction.

Nom nom nom…

And here’s the tiny window where Jake could actually go back into hiding. But he never does…because he’s greedy.

“Hey, are there any more of those!?”

And then this is when I grabbed him and dragged him out of there…because as cute as he is in there, under the bed is off limits. There are enough officially sanctioned hideouts in the apartment, thank you very much!

Aby-a-Day – September 20: Stronger than Dirt

About a month ago, I posted about Jacoby’s fascination with our laundry basket.

Well, he hasn’t gotten over it yet.

It’s really pretty hilarious. I’ll walk into the bedroom and there he is, in the basket, watching me.

If the light is just right, the glowing eyes in amongst the T-shirts and jeans can be pretty disconcerting.

I really don’t get the attraction.

I mean, there’s dirty socks in there!

I wonder what he thinks about while he’s in there?

Apart from how to get out of the basket…

Aby-a-Day – August 18: Abys are clean and colourful cats

I never stop being amused by the way cats go through fads regarding napping spots and hiding places. One particular spot can be ignored for months and then, suddenly and for no apparent reason, it will become the hottest thing in the house.

Jacoby is a textbook example of the faddist cat. It’s funny to see him decide to revisit an old favourite or decide it’s time for a new one. He’s just inaugurated a new place: the coloured side of our laundry basket.

I haven’t ever seen him go in there before this week. Now he’s doing it every night.

It’s a pretty deep laundry bag, and it’s not easy to get in and out of, and let’s face it: it’s dirty laundry. It can’t be that nice a place to hang out.

Still, you have to give Jake credit: he only goes in the coloured laundry side, not the white side. I guess he’s leaving that open for Kylie.

Aby-a-Day – December 24: The Abyssinian Santa Claus box trap

Jacoby is determined to catch Santa in the act this year.

“He’ll never see me in here!”

“Ha! I’m ready now! Santa won’t know what hit him!”

Aby-a-Day – October 13: Some people just have skeletons in their closets…

Opening doors in our apartment is always an adventure.

You never know who’s going to sneak in or out when you least suspect it.

Jacoby, especially, loves to camp out in the bedroom closet, and also the laundry closet.

And once he gets in, he hunkers down and won’t come out for anything, not even treats or his laser pointer!

Aby-a-Day – June 9: Jake’s doing his part for the environment

As I mentioned the other day, Jacoby does love his plastic shopping bags.

However, he also loves reusable shopping bags. For one thing, they stand up unassisted!

And, they smell quite nice…even if they don’t taste as good as the plastic ones.

And, of course, Jake’s totally invisible when he’s inside one!

Aby-a-Day – Day 324 of 365

I have to admit…all of these holiday posts are getting me a little excited for Christmas.

We’re going to storage tomorrow to get the tree, stockings and the turkey pan. Then, next weekend…

Jacoby gets his secret fort back.
