Do you hate mornings?
Alfred is definitely not a fan.
I caught him NOT getting out of bed the other morning.
Freddy’s face is a whole mood. I get it, Freddy.
One thing all of the cats love to do when we go outside is chew on the grass. Alfred and Lorelai especially enjoy chomping on fresh, green bladage.
It’s funny. Izaak and Dashiell aren’t as much into eating grass. But it’s the first thing Freddy and Rory do when we open the front door.
Nom nom nom.
Sometimes, though, the camera catches some humourous faces.
Like this one. Freddy’s trying to catch moving grass…but he looks like he’s doing a heckin’ screm.
It’s been a busy week…and I got to today and couldn’t think of anything to post.
So, here are Alfred and Izaak, the nap partners.
Even when she was a kitten, Lorelai has been a very skilled shoulder cat. She can jump from the ground to your shoulder in one easy leap and stick the landing, without sticking your shoulder.
Izaak…not so much. But he really wants to be a shoulder cat. And he’s been practicing.
“Aw yeah, I got this.”
This is one of those ideas that seemed better in my head. I was going to work on my Dashiell as Hamilton piece, but the meme of Rudy Giuliani looking like villian Simon Bar Sinister from the old Underdog cartoons…and I had an idea.
I thought I’d try to draw Izaak as Simon, adding the whatever it was that was dripping down the side of Giuliani’s head last week…but meh. Not sure I like how it turned out. I think I need to go back to the late 1700’s.
Tonight, on a very special episode of the Daily Abyssinian…
Today is National Voter Registration Day in the States. I may be living in Sweden now, but I am still an American and I still vote as a Massachusetts resident. In fact, I am filling out my ballot right now.
If you are living in the US…please vote. That is all.
(Sidenote: the image I posted is available as a T-shirt…)
I have had a rather crappy 24 hours. It’s finished now, but it just really drained me, emotionally.
Therefore, today’s post is the blogging equivalent of just making pasta with whatever sauce because you have zero idea what to have for supper and can’t be arsed to make anything but you really need to eat.
Recently, Izaak has decided he wants to try to be a shoulder cat. He’s started jumping on Björn the way Lorelai does.
I love the little grabby hands.
He’s pretty awkward, though.
Not at all the graceful little squirrel that Rory is at all.
He really has to work at keeping his balance!
More gratuitous grabby hand action. Sorry this post is so listless, but I am just completely out of spoons.
I was reminded of the two Abyssinian drawings I did for the Fall and Spring issues of the Abyssinian Cat Club of America. I made some marble magnetswith the images and just noticed them again the other day.
When I drew my cartoons before getting the iPad, I would do the sketches, trace them in ink, and then scan them and put them together in Photoshop.
I also had some inkbrush pens that I was experimenting with. Since the cover of the newsletter was printed in black and white, I wanted to do a different sort of springtime drawing. Plus, the snowdrops coming up through the snow is one of my favourite signs of spring. On the final version, I added the shadows and added an “icy” filter to the background.
I immediately knew what I wanted to do for the fall cover. Sometimes I would do several versions of a face or other parts to get the best drawing assembled.
I remember drawing these leaves. I sketched a few different styles and then traced them over and over again to get the look I wanted. It’s so much easier now that I have leaf brushes in Procreate and Photoshop! Even so, there’s something satisfying about drawing on paper…Someday I should finish the series with summer and winter.
My dad’s birthday is the 4th of July, so I have always thought of today as that first, and then the holiday celebrating the independence of the United States. My dad is 91 today, which is amazing. I haven’t seen him since 2007. I was planning a trip back to visit him…but then Trump was elected. So, lately…I don’t see very much to celebrate, quite honestly.
Boston has cancelled their world-renowned Boston Pops Concert and Fireworks Spectacular, which is amazing to me. It’s broadcast coast to coast, and it’s such a July 4th tradition. Maybe now people will take this pandemic seriously.
But instead of that, do you know what I did? I played a game
I downloaded the game Clan of Cats years ago, but I never played it. Until today. For some reason, I randomly decided to give it a spin. And it’s actually a lot of fun. You’re a cat, and you gather your clanmembers, build your home base (apparently these cats use fire and build log forts, but okay), fight creatures to get magic, fight bosses and conquer other clans.
It could be so much more; you could be able to interact with other players, you could be able to play it on a Mac or a PC, you could be able to really customise your cat…but hey. You can fight alligators in water and kill them with fireballs.
See all the dead alligators? Good times.
The fun thing about Hipstamatic is that they’re always releasing new films and lenses. This weekend, they released the Glam-o-Rama SnapPak with the Disco Stu lens and Funktown film. The samples they showed in the email looked pretty cool, and I wanted to try it out.
The problem with this film/lens combination (and I have no idea why) is that when you look through the viewfinder…all you see is a blur. This hasn’t ever happened with any other Hipstamatic combo before. Not being able to see what you’re taking a photo of is a bit challenging, to say the least.
This film/lens combo is glamourous, though. It even makes an ordinary yawn look sparkletastic.
I love the glow it added to these ordinary photos of Alfred.
Izaak gave me this pose…but that’s just because it was time for his chicken neck.
So we repaired to the kitchen.
I love these photos of Dashiell. He looks like he should be on the cover of an 80’s compilation of soft rock ballads.
Not being able to see what you’re photographing lends itself to some interesting compositions.
Although I have to say, I really like this action shot of Freddy trying to grab his neck.
Meanwhile, Angel waits patiently for her crunchies.
In a lot of places (that don’t include Sweden at the moment), people have been told to “shelter in place” to avoid spreading Covid-19. Despite the Swedish government not yet ordering a lockdown, I have been staying inside as much as possible. So I thought I’d show the places the cats have been sheltering in today.
This was what Izaak and Alfred were doing before I got up to take photos.
I love the way this shot of Lorelai! Part of the fun of Hipstamatic is it’s random, like a slot machine. And this photo is one of the jackpots!
And this one isn’t bad either.
Here’s Dashiell on Pyret’s chair.
And here’s Dash channeling 1967.
One of Angel’s napping spots is on a dining table chair. That’s where I found her today.
And, as napping places go, the kitchen tables are a pretty good place to nap.
This is a silly little thing…but I thought it was kind of interesting. With yesterday’s post with Kalle, Lorelai and Izaak, I only had two photos to work with…and in one of them, Zak’s head was blurry.
So, I found a different head.
And fixed it up to match the body in the photo.
And…well, you saw the result. A photo with a nice, sharp, Zak head.
Today is National Cat Day in the States…and, having no ideas for a post today, I thought I’d just go round and take photos of the cats being themselves, with the Hipstamatic camera.
Alfred, napping on the sofa next to me, was the first.
Start with what’s close at hand, right?
Freddy was cool with whatever…
Next we have Jacoby, sleeping on our bed.
Hipstamatic makes that fun.
A lot of fun.
Next, we have Izaak in the kitchen.
He’s so much more food-oriented than Logan…
Freddy and Lorelai joined us in the kitchen.
Rory was so cute today…
She is so pretty.
And…just a little bit goofy.
Angel, meanwhile, was up in the cubby part of the cat tree.
She really loves it in there.
But it’s one of the few places in the world where she feels safe and secure.
Angel is an amazingly strong girlcat.
Crossword puzzles are very popular in Sweden. There are dozens of different crossword magazines available, and all the daily newspapers also publish them. A friend sent me this one from https://www.dn.se/kultur-noje/kulturdebatt/sveriges-korsordsmakare-var-korsordstradition-ligger-snart-i-spillror/Dagens Nyheter a year ago, and I recently found it whilst I was looking for something else.
I love it, of course, because it really illustrates a FIFe show’s layout. And the breed depictions are really nicely done. I couldn’t find much out this illustration at all, sadly, but I did find the artist, Ann-Charlotte Odén, on DeviantArt, so I may send her a message asking about it.
As for the translations: The top running pair are saying, “I suggest we start a sports club for cats instead!” (He’s probably a Turkish Angora) The other cat is saying “Okay!”
“Ouch! He only had 10 points to go to 100!” says the Abyssinian.
The black silver classic tabby British Shorthair says, “That’s not the right way to hold (a cat)!” and the Cornish Rex agrees, saying, “Oj! What’s happening!?”
And the human is saying, “Ow! I pulled (a muscle) between my heel and calf!” I have no idea what that means…I suspect all of the comments are clues to the crossword puzzle itself.
Which means the answer to that last one is probably “Achilles.”
I’m not even sure that’s a real word.
Jacoby calls shenanigans.
“‘Zow’ isn’t a real word!”
Yeah I had no idea how to illustrate this. So here’s Jake at the Apple Store, standing tall in his stroller.
I just don’t even know what to do with that. So here’s a photo of Jacoby’s 19 day old nephew (his brother Dillin’s son) with his mother Georgie that Sherry posted on the Pellburn Abys Facebook page. Because…to get kittens, it takes two to tango? I have no idea.
The thing about being a visual person is, someone will say something and I’ll be so intrigued by it I just have to draw it. The other day Meg said: “Say…there’s an idea; Jake … as a storm chaser. You could base it on “Sharknado.” (He) could be crazy looking…AND looking for some other sort of “Fishnado.”
Yeah…so…I didn’t actually get into a lot detail with the cat part of the vision, but…
