Aby-a-Day – 1 Augusti: Emma and the cats outside (Swedish Cinema Sunday)

Today we took the cats out with us to take out the recycling. Emma got to handle Lorelai’s leash.

roryzakoutside_7746

It’s been raining most of the week, so the cats haven’t been outside in a while.

emmazakoutside_7749

While we usually let Izaak and Alfred follow us at their own pace, Emma wanted to try and keep them all with us.

roryyorkieoutside_7750

When we first saw this little Yorkie, I was afraid it was going to start yapping and being annoying, but it actually seemed curious about the cats.

roryyorkieoutside_7752

Rory was curious, too. We let them say hello.

roryrugoutside_7756

Rory and I continued to the garbage bin whilst Björn and Emma tried to get Zak to follow us (he had been spooked by the neighbour boys and was hiding from them). On the way we passed one of the rug racks being used for its actual purpose.

roryvallhundoutside_7758

In the end, Björn and decided Zak would be fine until we got back, and finally made it to the bins. When we got there, we met an adult Vallhund!

rorybjorbvallhundoutside_7759

At first, the dog was a little too eager for Rory’s liking.

rorvallhundoutside_7760

But don’t worry. Although she be small, Rory is mighty fierce. She can hold her own.

roryvallhundoutside_7761

roryvallhundoutside_7762

Eventually, the Vallhund settled down, and they and Rory had a nice little meeting.

freddyvallhundoutside_7768

Freddy got to meet the Vallhund, too.

rorybikeoutside_7765

When Björn went to Stockholm yesterday to collect Emma, he’d left his bicycle next to the bus stop. It was very convenient to fetch it on the way back from the bins. As Björn was wheeling it up the path, Rory did something surprising: she jumped up on the chain guard!

rorybikeoutside_7766

The thing is…she didn’t jump off even when Björn continued to move the bike!

everyonebikeoutside_7771

She rode on that chain guard for a while, too.

Long enough, in fact, that I was able to make a little video. Click on the image to watch it in a new window on Flickr.

Aby-a-Day – 19 Juni: Happiness is a warm puppy (Swedish Saturday)

A couple in the C part of our building recently got a Swedish Vallhund puppy. We’ve seen them walking him outside, but we had yet to be outside with the cats when they were training him.

rorypuppy_7164

Until last Thursday, when we took the recyclables out. As we know, Lorelai likes dogs. But she’s never really met a puppy before.

rorypuppy_7162

The pup is really young, and he’s squirmy and yappy. At first, Rory was a little taken aback.

rorypuppy_7166

rorypuppy_7167

But eventually they touched noses.

freddypuppy_7169

freddypuppy_7170

Then Alfred strolled up to meet the puppy, whose name is Toke (Pronounced “TOH-kuh”).

freddypuppy_7171

It was pretty funny to see how big Toke made Freddy look. Toke looks a little intimidated. Toke’s humans were happy to introduce him to our cats; they want to get a kitten as well.

zakfredydrorypuppy_7173

And then Izaak joined the party.
zakfreddyrorypuppy_7175

“That sure is a funny-looking cat!”

zakpuppy_7176

“Wait…That’s no cat!”

Aby-a-Day – 1 Augusti 2020: And they called it puppy love (Swedish Saturday)

The other day when we were outside, a man with a black Schnauzer puppy walked by. Alfred happened to be looking for birds in the bushes nearby, and walked up to the pair.

freddypuppy_4186

It was actually pretty funny; the man didn’t even notice Freddy until Björn told him that Freddy was behind him.

roryoutside_4157

Then Lorelai saw the puppy.

roryoutside_4158

As we have seen in the past, Rory loves dogs.

roryoutside_4159

She bolted towards the puppy.

rorypuppy_4198

It was the puppy’s first experience with cats, and the owner used it as a teaching tool. He gave the puppy treats for staying in the sit position.

rorypuppy_4199

I was surprised that Rory didn’t get any closer to the puppy than this. I guess she was social distancing.

Aby-a-Day – 21 February 2020: Freddy and Bruno meet again (Swedish Saturday)

The first time Alfred and Bruno met, it got a little…tense. But since Lorelai has befriended him, Freddy’s been cutting Bruno a bit of a break.

freddybruno_1391

But he’s still not really sure about this canine.

freddybruno_1392

…And, there it is…

freddybrunoclose_1392

Look at Freddy, getting his fierce on.

freddybruno_1389

Bruno’s used to being put in his place by cats…after all, he was raised by Markis…so, yeah.

Aby-a-Day – 25 Juli: It’s official – Lorelai likes dogs (Thursday Things)

As I have posted before, Lorelai has never minded seeing dogs on trains. She has also always been rather fond of our neighbours’ dog, Bruno. And then there was that time that Rory chased the Papillion

everyoneoutsideC08990

The other day, Lorelai, Izaak and Alfred were outside exploring when we met a new black dog. At first, Freddy tried to do the big brother thing, protecting the younger cats.

roryblackdogC08992

But, rebelling against Freddy’s protectiveness, Rory decided she was going to meet this new dog.

roryblackdogC08993

roryblackdogC08995

roryblackdogC08997

She marched right out and went to touch noses with this new dog.

roryblackdogC08998

roryblackdogC09000

roryblackdogC09002

The dog was actually a little thrown off by this very forward, very outgoing, little cat.

roryzakblackdogC09005

Emboldened by Rory, Zak also came to meet the dog.

roryzakblackdogC09008

He wasn’t as sure about the dog as Rory was…but he at least managed to stay calm in the dog’s presence. That’s at least progress, right?

Aby-a-Day – 27 September: Role reversal (Thursday Things)

When we were outside the other weekend, Lorelai encountered a very sweet, very well-behaved Papillon.

rorydogC01991

rorydogC01992

At first, she was a bit on the defensive. Yet, she still approached him.

rorydogC01995

rorydogC01997

They even almost touched noses!

rorydogC01999

rorydogC02002

Rory wasn’t sure how she felt about that.

zakdogC02004

Meanwhile, Izaak…

zakdogC02007

…Zak was not having any of this dog nonsense.

rorydogC02008

rorydogC02010

The dog’s owner tried to continue on their walk, and pulled the dog along with her.

Aby-a-Day – 16 September: Dogs on a train (Cat Show Sunday)

Still processing everything from the show. On Sunday, neither Lorelai nor Izaak were nominated, so it was a fairly peaceful show day. We just sat and talked to people. I got to talk to Göran, my one-time nurse, and found out an interesting fact that no one bothered to mention before: Not only could I have lost my finger or hand from the infection caused by the cat bite…I could have lost my life! So, everyone reading, please remember: If you are bitten in the hand or finger by a cat and it becomes at all swollen…go to an ER immediately. Don’t waste time at a local urgent care.

rorydogtrain_191213

Our train ride home was interesting, though. On Swedish trains, there are special pet compartments that are the only places animals are allowed. In this particular pet car, there were only nine seats…and we had two cats and four dogs! We boarded the train in Göteborg with a very well behaved rescue dog from Greece. He lived with cats and was not at all fazed by Zak and Rory. When a Border Collie got on a few stations later, though, the dog reacted. The Border Collie and his human sat in the doorway. Then in Falköping, we were joined by a Bedlington Terrier and a Chinese Crested!

rorydogtrain_4591

Their human was delighted to see a Singapura in person and had to have a photo. She said her friend, who had a Somali, would be so jealous that she had met a Singa.

rorydogtrain_4594

Rory in particular was fascinated by the Chinese Crested. She never puffed up, growled or hissed, and she actually got up the nerve to touch the dog’s ear with her nose!

Aby-a-Day – 18 August: “Getting there is half the fun” (Cat Show Saturday)

We’re at a cat show this weekend, but I am still processing the photos I took today, so I don’t have a show report prepared yet.

zakrory-trainIMG_4363

So instead, let’s talk about getting to the show, which is a two-hour train ride to Stockholm and then a commuter train to a hotel near the show hall.

zakrory-trainIMG_4365

We took the train from Skövde to Stockholm. This was Lorelai’s second train ride with us, and Izaak’s first since I collected him from Arlanda’s cargo department back in June. It’s Rory’s second show, and Zak’s first.

zakrorydog-trainIMG_4368

In our car, there was another animal passenger, a black French bulldog. This was very interesting to Rory and Zak.

zakbjörn-trainIMG_4373

zakbjörn-trainIMG_4374

zakbjörn-trainIMG_4376

Although perhaps not as interesting as Björn’s sandwich…

rory-trainIMG_4378

Our first train ride with two kittens was mostly uneventful.

zakrory-trainmayhemIMG_4381

“Mostly” being the operative word. Zak managed to slip his harness and hide under a seat in another section of the train. That was fun.

zakrorydog-trainIMG_4382

zakrorydog-trainIMG_4383

There was also an interesting moment when the Frenchy got off the train.

zakrory-hotelC00831

It was pretty late when we finally checked into our hotel room (Rory’s second, Zak’s first), but they wasted no time getting comfortable.

zakrory-hotelC00835

And they were adorably comfortable…

zakrory-hotelroomC00839

…until Zak decided he would rather be comfortable with his IKEA mouse…

Aby-a-Day – 9 July: “Sometimes being a brother is even better than being a superhero” (Medical Monday)

The last time we all went to the vet, we encountered a gorgeous German Shepherd in the lobby. He was so huge compared to Lorelai!

rorydogvetC06060

But Rory was her usual fearless self.

rorydogvetC06058

In fact, she barely seemed to notice him at all. “Dog? What dog?”

freddyrorydogvetC06055

Alfred, on the other hand…

freddyvetC06054

…did not like the looks of that enormous predator at all.

freddyrorydogvetC06061

In fact, he put his body between the dog and Rory to protect her.

freddyrorydogvetC06065

The dog had the good sense to look appropriately intimidated.

freddyrorydogvetC06068

“Don’t worry, little sister. I won’t let this beast hurt you.” Not that Rory looks at all concerned.

freddydogvetC06069

The Shepherd was actually a well-trained tracking and guard dog, and he and his human volunteer with the canine unit at their local Hemvärnet battalion. Hemvärnet dogs are very disciplined, and he wouldn’t have hurt a kitten.

freddydogvetC06076

Freddy didn’t still didn’t trust him. The entire time we were there with that dog, he remained vigilant, protecting Rory from harm.

Aby-a-Day – Day 195 of 365

One thing I really love about my vet’s office is the fond memories I have of the first time I took Jacoby in for a visit. It was only his fourth day with us, and everything was new and interesting to him. It was also the very first time he met a dog, and he was fearless and curious. Granted, the dog was almost the same size as he was…but somehow I knew it would lead to something big.

jake 019

They were right around the same age, too.

jake 004

I have a sneaking suspicion that Jake is now larger than that dog is now. But he never outgrew that initial kittenish bravery when it comes to canines and, almost a year later, he still isn’t bothered by dogs as long as they don’t bark in his face.

jakedog-vetN6650

I couldn’t let him out of his carrier to really meet the dog, because I had three other cats to wrangle. It’s too bad; it would have been interesting to see him interact with a dog who I know lives with a cat.

jakedog-vetN6651

That’s her, the calico in the green carrier in the background.

Aby-a-Day – Day 29 of 365

Right off the bat, I have to apologise for the quality of today’s photos. All I had time to use was my phone’s camera, and I didn’t want to miss getting any photos of this. I am so proud of Jacoby! When I got home, two of my nearest neighbours (next door and across the hall) were coming back from walking their dogs (Tank, a brindle and white English Bulldog, Kona, a black and white French Bulldog, and Sadie, a black brown and white Bassett Hound). As usual, Jake wanted to come play in the hallway when I opened the door, and I saw the two Bullies charging up the hallway. “All right, Jakey, come see your friends.

He made a beeline for Tank, who’s about the same age as Jake, but massive. I was amazed – Jake walked right up to Tank and headbutted him in the jowls! I was stunned. I said, “I wish I had a camera,” and then realised I had my iPhone in my hand.

jakedogs1

jakedogs2
I’m so glad I remembered it! Look at Jacoby’s body language…tail up, ears forward. These dogs may all be bigger than Jake, but he knows them, and he’s unfazed.

jakedogs3
Here’s Jake touching noses with Kona while Tank tries to reach him; this is as close as I got to a repeat performance of the headbutt.

jakedogs4
Just when I couldn’t feel any more proud of my little boy…he flopped over and started rolling on his back! Now, that’s a cat who’s not intimidated by dogs!

I felt so…serendipitous. I mean, it was just in yesterday’s post that I mentioned Jacoby not being as fearful of dogs as his brother Gun-Hee was. Today, he goes and proves it!

KMD strikes again!

I just got this voicemail:
“Okay, so I’m in the living room, checking my email, and for like, an hour, I didn’t know where Gun-Hee and Tessie were because I didn’t see them. Then, I start hearing meows and scratchings, and I’m like, what the hell is going on? So I try to look for them in the bedroom, and they had some project going underneath the desk. What they had done was, Gun-Hee had gotten one of the fish filters and ripped it apart, and the charcoal inside was all over the place and Tessie was batting it around! The filter was completely empty and I spent like 20 minutes vacuuming it all up. Bad kitties!”

I called back to get the full story, because the filters are assemble-yourself ones and I make a few ahead and keep them in a cheap “tupperware” take-out container with a cracked lid for ventilation. Evidently, Gun-Hee had chewed his way through the lid to get the filter! While I was on the phone, it was discovered that he’d also knocked over the pitcher of extra fishtank water. Not only that, he’d also worked open the feeding door on the top of the tank and had been sticking his hands in.

(In relaying the story to my stepmom, she asked, “‘Hands?’ You mean, paws?” And I said, “No, with Gun-Hee, they’re really more like little hands, the way he uses them.”)

It’s funny, though, because he really hasn’t paid much attention to the fish since February…but apparently he’s rediscovered them!

Something fishy…

The other day, I found this packet of fish food that Gun-Hee decided to teethe on…

What impresses me the most about this is the way he chewed out around the outline of the fish on the package.

But apart from trying to eat their food, Gun-Hee is fascinated with the fish…

See..?
