Aby-a-Day – 15 May: Me and my boys (Selfie Sunday)

Jacoby loves to hang out with me while I FaceTime with Björn.

jakecocohugs2IMG_0449

Sometimes I grab him and make him interact with us.

jakecocohugs2IMG_0447

As you can see, he’s a big fan of that.

jakecocoheadbuttsIMG_0483

More often, though, he just meanders into the picture, asking for pettins.

jakecocoheadbuttsIMG_0482

“Oh, hey new dad. Didn’t see you there.”

jakecocoheadbuttsIMG_0481

Annnnddd…back to rubbing on mommy.

jakecocoheadbuttsIMG_0472

He does that a lot.

jakecocoheadbuttsIMG_0473

He also comes in for random headbutts.

jakecocoheadbuttsIMG_0475

Headbutt, rub, roll, repeat.

Aby-a-Day – 13 February: “Pet” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Pet.”

jakepetIMG_2940 1

Cats are a pet of humans.

jakepetIMG_2941 1

Or are they?

jakepetIMG_2947 1

The word “pet” implies ownership.

jakepetIMG_2953 1

But when it comes to cats…who owns whom?

jakepetIMG_2957

Are cats our pets?

jakepetIMG_2959 1

Or are we theirs?

jakepetIMG_2960 1

It’s an interesting question.

jakepetIMG_2962 1

Especially when it comes to the interactive and tactile creatures that are cats.

jakepetIMG_2963 1

Ownership is a hazy concept at best when it comes to cats.

jakepetIMG_2966 1

Even if you say, “the ones who do the petting are the ones who aren’t ‘pets'” doesn’t work. Kylie regularly pets humans by patting them on the head. So the one doing the petting isn’t the default “owner.”

jakepetIMG_2967 1

So, am I Jacoby’s pet? Or is he my pet? Or…are we each other’s pet? It’s hard to say.

Aby-a-Day – 25 January: Undercover cat (Hipstamatic Monday)

As I posted yesterday, Jacoby loves to cuddle with me. Sometimes, he likes to sleep on me…

hipstajakeundercoversIMG_2674

…and other times, he’d rather sleep with me. Under the covers.

hipstajakeundercoversIMG_2671

He usually uses my arm as a pillow. And he often falls asleep so deeply that he stops purring!

Aby-a-Day – December 27: Reverse FaceTime Date (Selfie Sunday)

While I’ve been in Sweden, Jacoby has been moping.

jake-mope5

He’s been hanging out in the bedroom. He’s started building a mancave in the comforter on the bed.

jake-mope6

He goes into a fold and then scoops out a tunnel by rolling in place. And then he just sleeps there. All. Day. Long.

jake-facetime3

So, I decided to FaceTime with him.

jake-facetime2

At first, he didn’t react much. I’d woken him up and he was a bit groggy.

jake-facetime4

Jake just wanted to sleep until I come back, I guess.

jake-facetime6

But hearing my voice seemed to perk him up.

jake-facetime7

He reached his paw out to touch the phone.

jake-facetime7

And then, he rolled over!

jake-facetime8

He actually left his quilt fort and sat up.

jake-facetime10

He gave me his opinion on my being away…

jake-facetime12

…but then he really perked up.

jake-facetime13

Jake does understand the concept of FaceTime.

jake-facetime14

He knows it’s me, and my voice.

jake-facetime15

It might be better if he’d been “talking” to me over an iPad or a Mac, something with a larger screen than just an iPhone 6…but it worked pretty well. He seemed to be much happier after our call.

Aby-a-Day – December 13: My two men (Selfie Sunday)

Being that I am in Boston and Björn is in Sweden, we spend a LOT of our lives talking on FaceTime. And Jacoby, of course, loves to help.

facetimejakecocoselfie1

Every so often, Björn will capture Jake and I at the other end of his iPad and send it to me. This was a couple of weeks ago. I was unhappy with my haircut, so I was hiding behind Jake.

facetimejakecocoselfie2

This one was taken a couple of nights ago. Jake sees no difference between walking on the mattress or walking on my face, apparently. As you can see up in the lefthand corner, Björn found this highly amusing.

Aby-a-Day – November 15: Silly show selfies (Selfie Sunday)

While at cat shows with Jacoby, I amuse myself by taking selfies of us to send to Björn.

jakecocoselfieIMG_1148

Jake does not always approve of my attempts at taking selfies. I obviously look too goofy in this photo.

jakecocoselfieIMG_1406

Okay, Jake…NOW who looks goofy?

jakecocoselfieIMG_1410

That’s a little better.

jakecocoselfieIMG_1414

This one is us being super cute (or a facsimile thereof).

charlotte-coco-bjornNHFFselfie

This is my favourite though. It’s me and my friend Charlotte, Facetiming with Björn in the show hall. Charlotte lives in Astoria…I wish we were closer and could hang out more. I’ll miss her (and her lovely Siame…er, I mean, Colorpoint Shorthairs) when I finally get to move to Sweden.

Aby-a-Day – October 29: National Cat Day

Today is National Cat Day!

NEMOjakestatefarmTreatIMG_0676

According to the National Cat Day website, this holiday was canonised 10 years ago, in 2005, “to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their life for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us.” So let’s toast our bond with our feline buddies with a treat!

NEMOjakestatefarmTreatIMG_0678

What do you think, Jake from State Farm? Would you like a treat for National Cat Day?

NEMOjakestatefarmTreat

I guess that’s a yes.

Aby-a-Day – October 2: It’s time for NEMO’s Costume Contest again! (Fashion Friday Flashback)

Next weekend, Jacoby and I are going back to Sturbridge, MA to enter The New England Meow Outfit’s third annual CFA show. As always, the best and most fun feature of this show is the cat-human team costume contest.

JFKMMjakecocoC09515

At last year’s show, Jake and I went all out: I was Marilyn Monroe, and Jake was President John F. Kennedy.

JFKMMjakecocoC09513

We had a lot of fun with that combination. I worked hard to come up with the quintessential Marilyn ensemble, researching how her makeup was done and rewatching the famous “Happy Birthday Mr. President” video.

MMcocoC09476

I could barely walk in those shoes!

JFKMMjakecocoC09528

Even with all that preparation, we still didn’t win the competition, which shows you how good the other costumes entered are!

jakecocoNEMOegyptC04381

At NEMO’s first show, Jake and I actually wore three different outfits. We started out the morning as ancient Egyptians.

jakecocoNEMOSouthPacificC04919

Then, we changed into Nellie and Billis from South Pacific to perform “Honey Bun.”

jakecocoNEMOsushiC05126

Finally, our entry for the contest: A sushi waitress and, well, sushi. In retrospect, we should have gone with Honey Bun.

And what will we do for this year’s contest? Well…you’ll see. Jake, to his dismay, will need to wear pants again for this one. But as for me, while I’ll still need to wear a wig, and I’ll need to carry a prop, I won’t need to wear any makeup, and I’ll be able to walk in my shoes this year!

jakefirstthingIMG_7639

Aby-a-Day – May 10: Happy Mother’s Day to me…(Selfie Sunday)

Jacoby is having another UT flare-up.

jakeboxIMG_7729

I’ve never considered myself a maternal person. I was Daddy’s little girl, a complete tomboy, and I hated dolls.

momcoco0156

I had a stuffed kitty. I dressed her up and put her in the doll stroller. And yeah, I was seriously hating that pink dress.

coco_kitten

I have always been a cat person. Always. And I do feel like a cat mom. It’s not the same as being a human mom. In some ways, our relationship is more that of being partners or equals than being a parent and a child. But when they’re sick…

jakeUTIIMG_7740

…I feel like a mom.

jakeUTIIMG_7735

Jake started showing his classic UT symptom, going back and forth between the boxes and squatting in other places, at about 6:50 on Thursday night. Our vet closes at 7pm, so I wasn’t able to take him right in, but I was able to make an appointment first thing the next morning.

jakeUTIIMG_7737

We went in, and they did the usual things, took a urine sample, and gave us all the usual medicines.

jakeUTIIMG_7734

We took the bus home. On the way Jake was being so cute riding so nicely on the seat, that I had to take some selfies.

jakeUTIIMG_7733

They didn’t really turn out that well, but I like them. I think they capture how we both were feeling.

happyjake

And speaking of capturing a feeling…this is Jake after his first dose of Buprenex, which we keep on hand in case he has a flare up. Jake likes Buprenex!

So, if you consider yourself a cat mom…Happy Cat Mother’s Day!

Aby-a-Day – March 28: “Sport” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Sport.”

jakebootsC06932

As you saw yesterday, Jacoby is a really good sport.

jakebootsC06920

He really didn’t like those boots I had him try on, but he still modeled them for me.

jakebootsC06919

And when I say he didn’t like them…

jakebootsC06923

jakebootsC06924

…I mean he kind of hated them.

jakebootsC06900

But as I say, he’s a very good sport about the things I ask him to do for me.

jakebootsC06904

He may not always agree…but he humours me.

Aby-a-Day – February 14: “Cherished” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Cherished.”

jakecherishIMG_6911

No question who is cherished in our house.

jakecherishIMG_6912

I do believe it’s a two-way street, though. I think Jacoby cherishes me, too. He’s always by my side, helping.

jakecherishIMG_6913

A recent article in The Huffington Post about the way felines and humans interact says, among other things, that the dynamics of cat-human relationships are very much like human-human bonds.

jakecherishIMG_6914

“Researchers concluded cats do indeed attach to humans — especially women — as social partners, and not just because they want to keep their food bowls full.”

jakecherishIMG_6915

One part of the article I really liked: “The researchers established that cats and their owners heavily influence one another, often to the extent that they control each other’s behaviors. Extroverted women with young, active cats seem to be the most in tune with each other. The kitties in these pairings only have to give subtle cues – for example, a single upright movement of the tail — to let their owners know they’re looking for friendly attention…cats also seem to remember human kindness and return the favor later. If an owner fulfills her feline’s wish to interact, the cat will often comply with the owner’s desire for contact at other times.”

jakecherishIMG_6916

This right here, I believe, is why Jake is so good-natured about dressing up and posing for photos. I always tell people he does these things “because I ask him to” and, apparently, I was dead-on correct. He’s indulging me because I indulge him. Quid pro quo.

jakecherishIMG_6918

I’ve always thought that interacting with a cat was like interacting with a small, non-verbal human. Seems I was onto something.

jakecherishIMG_6921

We already know that cats recognise certain words (my Siamese Harri knew “Go on the bed and lie down” among other things), and that they invented meowing as a way to try to communicate with us on our terms.

jakecherishIMG_6922

Cats also chose to live with us as opposed to humans deciding to domesticate them. Cats alone of all domesticated animals, researchers think, chose to enter into a partnership with humans.

jakecherishIMG_6920

Dogs may be man’s best friend, but man is cat’s best friend.
