Aby-a-Day – 11 Augusti: Finally meeting Dashiell (Cinema Sunday)

As I posted yesterday, Meg, Russell and Dashiell arrived far too late for us to be able to meet them at the airport and collect Dash on Friday. So he stayed in Meg and Russell’s in the hotel near the airport.

I awoke to some smexy photos of Dash lounging in bed. Everyone slept in, and rightly so.

dashAnneskid_8453

We had a day in Helsinki planned for Meg, Russell and Carol Fogarty, another judge, so Dash spent the day at Anne’s house.

dashAnneskid_8452

There, he bonded with Anne’s teenaged daughter. He’s very good with kids.

After a day of walking around Helsinki, we had dinner at a great Finnish restaurant we’ve eaten at before on previous trips to Helsinki. Here’s Meg and me after dinner.

On our way back to our hotel in Tampere, we stopped by Anne’s and collected Dash. This is the grand opening of the carrier when we finally got him into our hotel room (click on the image to watch the video in another tab in Flickr).

We had a wonderfully spacious room, with places to put the food bowl, the water bowl…

…and the litter box house.

In anticipation of Dash’s arrival, my friend Molly sent him a welcome home present. It was even addressed to him.

I saved it to open when we finally were together.

He wasn’t entirely sure about it…but it will be his for the rest of his life.

Next, Dash explored our room.

And that was how we finally got Dash…

Mosey hunts with StarClan

Yesterday, not even a month after Jacoby died just before his tenth birthday, Molly posted this on Facebook: “He’s gone, my beloved Mosey. Sweetest cat in 30+ years of Abys. Damn kidney disease! At age eight, one sad Vet, two crying Vet Techs and I walked him to the Rainbow Bridge. Lisa Kaelin I owe you the world for breeding my favorite cat of all time. Farewell, Ch. Red Fern Moses2 of Tigerflower. It hurts so much…”

Longtime readers may remember that Jake and I met Rosey Mosey at a cat show when he was a kitten. At the time, he was third best kitten in CFA! We also met Mosey’s son, Nikolai, at another show.

mosesoftigerflowerN7497

Mosey was such a sweet, lovable boy. I can’t believe he is also gone so young. My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend has stopped running today. Sleep well in Tuonela, dear, sweet Mosey.

Aby-a-Day – 25 Februari: In memory of Walter Hutzler (Hipstamatic Monday)

Sad news…CFA judge Walter Hutzler has passed away. He was a great cat judge and person. I didn’t know him well, but he lived in Region 1 and I was lucky to have seen him judge and have Jacoby judged by him a few times.

hipstajakeIMG_5467

The thing I remember about Walter is his flamboyant style of dressing. He also often wore scarves, which I thought was cool, and a nice change from the usual ties CFA judges wear.

hipstajakeIMG_5466

He was even featured in the 2006 PBS documentary Standard of Perfection: Show Cats. It’s always fun to see judges you know on TV shows.

hipstajakeIMG_5464

Walter was a really fun judge to watch.

hipstajakeIMG_5463

He really interacted with the cats as he judged them.

hipstajakeIMG_5465

Since it was Monday, I remembered I had taken some Hipstamatic photos of Walter judging Jake at a show in Groton, CT in October 2011 (the same weekend I met Molly and Mosey and Jake Gbecame a Grand).

My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend has stopped running today. Sleep well in Tuonela, Walter.

Clawdius hunts with StarClan

I cannot believe I am having to write ANOTHER of these posts this year. But last night, my amazing friend Molly posted the following to Facebook: Walked Clawdius to the Rainbow Bridge tonight and our wonderful Vet sent him on his journey. I Clawdius II, 08/22/99 – 09/17/18. A life well lived. He will be so very missed…

Clawdius was actually three days younger than Björn’s Pyret, but he was able to celebrate one last birthday.

While the loss of any cat is sad, Clawdius’ death is particularly tragic as Molly’s husband, Don, passed away on 2 July. This is Don with both Clawdius and Mosey.

Ch. Tigerflower I Clawdius II‘s career ended (with 3 grand points from Wain Harding) in the third ring of his first show as a Champion. He growled at Lois Jensen and Molly pulled him. But he went on to father kittens, and his name appears in many well-known pedigrees. He is even very distantly related to Angel, Jacoby, Lorelai and Alfred!

It’s a different kind of sadness when you lose a longtime companion. When they’ve been by your side for 15 years or more, it’s not just their passing that you mourn. It’s also the loss of over a decade of always having been there. You reach out to pet them in the middle of the night, or you look in their favourite napping spot…and they just aren’t there.

My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend has stopped running today. Sleep well in Tuonela, darling Clawdius.

Aby-a-Day – 2 July: Silverpelt has two new stars tonight

Sad day today. Our good friend Molly’s husband, Don, died this morning. “Don was the brains behind Team Aby and the enforcer,” Molly told me. Meg said, “I still remember how Don made me laugh with his plans to ‘rough up’ Wain (Harding) in back of a showhall.” I only got to meet him once, when I went down to Florida with my ex and we met up at – what else? – a cat show. He was a sweetheart, though; Molly’s birthday post was actually a result of him contacting me.

This is what he sent Meg: “Message from Don re. Molly. Could you help by contacting your Aby-a-Day people or something?

Hi Meg. As you may or may not know Molly has a couple of events happening this month. One being her 80 birthday next Friday the 16th and the other will be the end of working career when she leaves her job on the 31st. Since she considers her friends in CFA her extended family. I am trying to create a birthday greetings blitz with her friends. I solicit your help with letting her friends in CFA know. Since she considers you a great friend I thought you could help in this effort getting the word around. More to follow. – The Donald.” (How funny is it that he referred to himself that way?) And then in an email to me, he wrote, “Oh by the way to get all the way across the ocean you have to type loud.” You can read Don’s obituary here.

As if that wasn’t enough, Jacoby’s cousin Taz (aka GC, GPD, NW Anubis Taz Mania) also died today after a two-month battle with pancreatitis.

stamford-tazE_3947

Taz and Jake were more than cousins. They were show companions. We shared hotel rooms with Meg and Taz on more than one occasion.

taztux-groton0305

Jake even lent Taz his clothes!

meg-taz1stIMG_7734

Meg and Taz recently came back to become, among other things, 15th best Premier in CFA this past show season.

My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friends stopped running today.

Happy Birthday, Molly!

One of my best friends in the Abyssinian world, Molly of Tigerflower Abyssinians, has a couple of major life events happening this month. At the end of the month, she is retiring…but today is her 80th birthday! Since Molly considers the CFA her extended family, I am trying to create a birthday greetings blitz with her friends. So…HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOLLY!

Molly has been breeding Abyssinians under the cattery name Tigerflower for over thirty years. Mainly working with dilutes, she’s raised countless litters of beautiful, title-winning Abys. Besides her Abyssinians, Molly followed a long New York fashion career – on staff at Mademoiselle and Glamour Magazines, freelance writing for Town & Country, wardrobe and speech writing for the Miss America pageants…she even once met Jack Benny!

mosesoftigerflowerN7492

mosesoftigerflowerN7493

I met Molly at a show in Groton, CT back in 2011. It was a memorable show for many reasons: Jacoby achieved his Grand Premiership, I met Richard of Chanan for the first time, and Jake and I dressed up as ancient Egyptians because the second day of the show fell on Halloween. But among the most memorable things was meeting Molly and Red Ferne Moses2 of Tigerflower.

mosesoftigerflowerN7497

He was quite the little firecracker, little Mosey!

mosesoftigerflowerN7538

He did well at that show, too.

When I lived in Boston, Molly lived in Orlando, FL and then in New Jersey, so we didn’t get to see her very often…but she did come to a couple of NEMO shows. This is the group of my friends and I after the first day of the first NEMO show…Molly supplied the plastic wine sippy cups.

mollynikNEMOfashiongirlC05418

She and her young red boy, Nik, were enchanted by this spectator at that show.

mollymegcocoweddingC05719

Molly was one of the few people who came to Björn’s and my wedding…in fact, having guests at our wedding at all was Molly’s idea!

weddinglunchIMGP0077

If it hadn’t been for her, we would not have had a wedding party.

glassabyC06390

She also gave us this incredible stained-glass Aby, which hangs in our front room window in our apartment where we can see it every day.

So…Molly…give your beloved Clawdius a hug from all of us here in Sweden…and have an absolutely marvelous birthday party! We wish we could be there to help you celebrate!
