Aby-a-Day – 25 Maj: Goodbye, FooPets (Cartoon Tuesday)

Yesterday, I discovered something very sad. FooPets, the online game I discovered 11 years ago and fell in love with because it featured Abyssinians, has shut down completely. Rumour>/a> has it that when Flash stopped being supported, the game stopped working and/or the original creator (a veterinarian) just didn’t renew the domain. I used to have a shortcut on my browser and I accidentally clicked on it yesterday; trust me, do NOT try to visit the site. It now directs to some…unsavoury images.

I hadn’t really checked in on my flock of Abys since last year, but I always thought about them.

The main reason I stopped going to the site was because they got rid of my favourite thing, Heart Park, which is the closest thing I ever found to a cat-themed online role-playing game.

It was a simple game, really, but I liked it.

You could even have kittens!

I wish I had taken screenshots the last time I visited the site. My main apartment was a loft in Cambridge with a view of Boston! I never thought about it going away, so I never took any of that view.

Aby-a-Day – 21 Januari 2020: Castle Cats (Cartoon Tuesday)

So, on our way to see Frozen 2 downtown, I couldn’t help but notice a power box decorated with the very lovely Castle Cats.

I had no idea what they were or what they referred to, and come to find out that they’re part of a video game designed by PocApp Studios, based right here in Skövde!

How cool is that? I am not much of a gamer, but I may have to check out this game!

Aby-a-Day – 24 Juni: Tentacle Kitty (Miniature Monday)

Last week I happened to go to our local second-hand shop and found an interesting plushie.

Intrigued, I looked at the tag, and it said “Tentacle Kitty, Second Edition.” Second edition? What? A pink kitty-squid with a cute little nose has been a thing long enough to have a second edition plushie and I have never heard of it before!? How is this possible?

Turns out, Tentacle Kitty was created in 2009 by a husband and wife team in Oregon. There’s a webcomic about her and a cast of other multi-limbed kitty characters. Not sure how I missed a cartoon kitty for ten whole years…but I’ve found her now! And she only cost 29kr (about $3 USD).

Izaak seems to really like her, too. Or maybe it’s just that her tentacles remind him of his snake.

PS: Today is Cat World Domination Day. Be sure to go and celebrate it with our Somali friend, Summer!

Singas are Super: Picky Chicken

(Tweet by @jaygootz)

This photo came up in my Facebook memories today, and I realised that I haven’t posted about what may be the most famous Singapura on the internet…but I reckon only a very few of you know his name.

Picky Chicken was the companion of Wendy Gosselin. He lost his battle with oral cancer at the age of 12 on 28 May 2014. But he will live forever as one of the winners of the greatest photoshop battles ever.

(Photoshop by Dominyka Jurkštaitė)

There are even more Photoshop battles involving Picky Chicken on Reddit.

Aby-a-Day – 10 May: Just a comment…(Cartoon Tuesday)

The other day I commented on a Facebook post on Nerds with Vaginas page (awesome page, I recommend it highly, but take into account my sense of humour). It was this picture of a drawing of a dinosaur…

…with someone’s two week’s notice. So I posted this doodle I did of Jacoby probably 5 years ago during a meeting…

…Along with this comment: ” I am so doing this when I quit. They yelled at me once for doodling kitties during meetings, so Imma draw a kitteh.”

And it’s gotten a surprisingly large amount of likes (92, last time I checked, but hey, who’s counting?)…and a couple of pretty great comments. Now, I don’t usually care about things like that, but hey…one of my drawings got some attention. That’s cool!

Cattoonize your kitty!

My friend Sanna-Leena did this ages ago ((2012!), but I’d forgotten about it and was recently reminded…Check out the Cattoonizer!

This is her two boys, Kossi and Sketsi. The Finnish captions read “Kossi, before meal” and “Sketsi, any time.”

Of course I had to try it, too. I mean, who doesn’t love a custom cartoon generator? Here’s our boy Jacoby. Yes, he’s got the same silly expression as Sketsi…but then, they are related (distantly, but still).

And here’s Angel. I had to do a teesy bit of Photoshop to get her to only have one eye.

Of course, I couldn’t leave out Kylie…

…or Tessie! Tess was the most difficult, but then, torties are like that.

Aby-a-Day – March 31: Three April Fool’s Moon (Cartoon Tuesday)

This is not actually based on the (in)famous Three Wolf Moon T-shirt. It’s actually based on the even more awesome Three Grumpy Cat Moon T-shirt and the equally hilarious (if slightly illegal) Three Keyboard Cat Moon T-shirt.

It had to be done. And I am going to try to get a shirt made, too. I’m holding my breath to see if Zazzle will let me make this – if they do, I’ll try to make a version for sale:

The moon background is actually two different moon photos by Moon-WillowStock on DeviantArt.

Aby-a-Day – December 3: Wordless Wednesday (Groupon)

Aby-a-Day – October 5: “Spark” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Spark.”

The only thing I can think of for this one is our friend Sparkle, a Somali and Jacoby’s very distant cousin. Jake does a pretty good Sparkle impression when he wants to, too.

We have both Sparkle’s books, and Jake really loves them.

He’s read them both cover to cover.

And, I’m sure, he’s gotten some really good ideas from them.

Jake also reads Sparkle’s blog every day.

Although he seems a little too interested in looking at the photos of Sparkle in her mermaid costume…

Life in Davis Square

I love when I find random photos of Jacoby on the internet.

Check out Richard Chase’s Life in Davis Square photos from ArtBeat.

See anyone you recognise?

Nyan Cat hunts in StarClan Now

Super sad news from Catsparella: The cat who inspired Nyan Cat has died from FIP. He was 2 years old.

He was a blue shorthair named Marty (after Marty McFly), and he took over the world. I have a Nyan Cat scarf, a T-shirt, and a very awesome camera strap featuring everyone’s favourite Pop-Tart rainbow cat

If you’ve been following my blog at all, you know FIP is my sworn enemy. It’s an evil, evil genetic disease that has no test, no vaccine, and no cure. There’s no way to really know if a cat has the “FIP gene” until they get sick. Very, very few cats survive FIP.

Jacoby’s half-brother, Gun-Hee, my first Aby, died from FIP before he was 2 years old. He was fine on June 1, looked a little peaked on June 10, went to the vet on June 20…and died on June 28. Researchers still don’t know a lot about FIP, except that it is caused by a mutation, not spread by air or shed in feces. I know it’s genetic because when Gun-Hee got sick, the cats he lived with (Kylie, age 3; Tessie, age 5; and Patrick, age 14) didn’t get so much as a sniffle…but his littermate-brother, Rusty, 1,000 miles away in New Brunswick, got sick with FIP within days of Gun-Hee. They hadn’t seen each other since they were 3 months old, but they both got the same disease in the same week.

Jake and Gun-Hee have the same father, Scar, but different mothers. Gun-Hee’s mother, Amber, had kittens with other fathers, and Scar had kittens with other mothers, but Gun-Hee and Rusty’s litter was the only one between Scar and Amber. No other kittens of Pellburn have gotten FIP.

And now Marty, aka Nyan Cat, has joined StarClan. Of course, he already has his own stars…and a rainbow, too.

Extra! Extra!

Okay…I got a text from Meg this morning telling me Jacoby was on the front page of the Herald. I knew there was going to be an article, but…Page 1?

The article is really great, and it discusses his therapy work and his show cat life as well as just going on errands with me.

I should have known better than to read the comments, though. Yikes. I mean, I know it’s the internet, but man, people can be mean. My hair? Really? And I must be single? Wow. I have to say, though, that most of the comments are positive, but who knew a cat in a stroller was such a lightning rod of controversy?

I’ve been working to become a serious cat blogger, like Sparkle or Catsparella, for a couple of years now, and I know all publicity is good publicity…but this is a little overwhelming.

But at least it gives me an idea for a new cartoon!

So this is interesting…yesterday I needed to run an errand in Cambridge, and since it didn’t involve groceries, I took Jacoby, in his stroller, along with me. Just a regular Tuesday, right?

Well…no. Even though it was after 6, the red line was still pretty crowded. As always, I tried to stay out of the way as much as I could. But evidently some people were still annoyed about the stroller on the train…and they Tweeted about it.

I had a run-in with a woman, too, who said she was allergic to cats (as am I) and how dare I bring a cat on the train? So…rather than arguing with her, I Tweeted about it.

Next thing I know, today my vet’s office calls me, saying someone from the Boston Herald wanted to interview “the woman with the cat in a stroller.” Turns out, after the bitchy Tweets, a bunch of pro-Strollercat Tweets started. And then, someone created a StrollerCat Twitter account! I guess it’s become kind of a thing

I literally found out about this from the reporter who left her number with the vet’s office! It’s crazy, but I guess Jake’s a sort of Boston celebrity now. I actually did a pretty decent interview with the Herald, and they asked a lot about our therapy work and the CFA Ambassador program; the reporter said it was going to be a positive piece.

Interestingly enough, I made this back in September of last year…evidently, it’s @strollercat’s motto.

Aby-a-Day – October 11: Drenched in vanilla twilight

As I mentioned in Sunday’s post, at the cat show in Groton I had the pleasure of meeting a lovely little Somali girl named Kayla (Kimbelot’s Kayla of Ameusin).

She’s only a year old, but she’s a seasoned pro when it comes to cat shows.

I was lucky enough to spend some time with Kayla on Saturday of the show.

Kayla and her human actually taught me something, too.

Kayla’s human used vanilla extract to keep Kayla calm and relaxed in the ring.

A little dab on her nose, and she can’t smell the other cats in the ring. She also won’t lose her temper in front of the judge.

Even funnier, Kayla loved the vanilla! When she saw the bottle come out of the box, she reacted the way most cats do when you shake a bag of Temptations treats, Aby-grabby hands and all.

I’ll have to try that trick sometime. I love how much I learn at cat shows. Something I saw on Sparkle’s blog the other day made me think about this…Steve Dale, a cat behavior consultant and pet journalist, says that we cat people don’t have public safety valves where we can express their affection. “In the world of cats, there is no dog park,” Dale says. “For cat owners, the dog park is the internet.” Which is true: we don’t get to go out and have playdates with our cats the way dog people (and people with kids) do…but we can, at cat shows. Besides the internet, we have cat shows to bond over our cats.

Throw in an agility course, and maybe we do have a dog park equivalent after all.

Aby-a-Day Upheaval: Remember this post about CafePress?

This one, where I mentioned:

I made one of these Kor water bottles for myself, and I didn’t realise at the time that it was going to be available to anyone to purchase…but, it is!

Here’s a close-up of the photo of Jacoby; I made it as large as I could on the bottle.

Kor water bottles are really awesome. I think they may be the best water bottles I’ve ever used. They have a nice handle, easy-access lid that’s attached, nice drinking opening…and this really cool thing called “stones” by which you can put a photo or any flat item under the lid where you will see it everytime you drink!

Their stones are made of some kind of waterproof paper, but they’ll have a way to customise them yourself on their site, and, they’re water-resistant, so you can laminate the photo and it’ll be fine (at least, mine are, so far). CafePress only has two colours available, Fuschia and Blue, but you can buy replacement rings and caps for the stones and adapt the colour at least a little.

Well, guess what? I just opened the Aby-a-Day Cafepress Show…where we’re serious about our cats on the internet! Granted, it’s a work in progress (I know, I KNOW, those are not Abys on the shop home page, and as soon as I figure out how to customise the template, you better believe that’s gonna change), and not all the products are entirely ready for sale yet (they’re placeholders while I fix the images to fit the products better, But “I promise you, we are open” during construction.

If you use the code BIGTIME before midnight PDT TONIGHT, you can save 20% on all Marketplace items (which mine are), too. So that’s special.
