Aby-a-Day – 11 Januari: 12 years ago this week…(Friday Flashback)

12 years ago this week, on 7 January 2007, I posted about Gun-Hee’s first visit to Petco.

gunhee-petcomice2908

He was quite impressed with the mice.

gunhee-petcobirds903

The birds…not so much.

petco-tessie

tessie-cart+birds

Those were always more Tessie’s thing.

jakepetsmartbudgiesIMG_9041

And Jacoby’s, too.

gunhee-petcotoys1905

I’m just glad that nobody tried to buy him for $3.99, though!

Aby-a-Day – December 31: Wordless Wednesday (I want the one with the Aby on it!)

Aby-a-Day – December 25: Behind the scenes with Santa

Here’s some photos of yesterday’s photo being taken:

jakexmasoutingE_2093

jakexmasoutingE_2094

I was a little bit amused that the photos were just taken with a little digital camera. Ah, progress.

jakexmasoutingE_2096

jakexmasoutingE_2097

jakexmasoutingE_2098

I really liked the manager’s commitment to the Santa outfit. I mean, really, he only needed to wear the top half of the suit, right?

Aby-a-Day – December 24: Wordless Wednesday (Unwrap joy)

Aby-a-Day – December 21: A visit to St. Nicholas

Last week, Jacoby went to see Santa at Petco.

jakexmasstoller5

This is something I’ve wanted to do with him forever. I used to take my Siamese, Harri and Sigrid, to see Santa back in San Francisco.

harrisigridXmas95_0149

harrisigridXmas96_0149

So when I learned Petco was doing photos with Santa I leapt at the chance.

jakexmasstoller2

Luckily, it was a nice warm day, in the 40’s. I bundled Jake up well, but really, it wasn’t that cold at all.

jakexmasoutingE_2072

It’s been a while since we went anywhere in Jake’s stroller. I think he was happy to go out somewhere.

jakexmasoutingE_2069

We actually went to an Unleashed by Petco store. This one just opened on Washington Street in the South End back in July, and it’s so close to where we live! It was less than a mile’s walk, closer than the Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Center. We’ll definitely have to come back more often.

jakexmasoutingE_2074

The staff is awesome. And they were thrilled to see a cat come to shop.

jakexmasoutingE_2087

The manager, Jim, was playing Santa. He left his post to come meet Jake.

jakexmasoutingE_2085

jakexmasoutingE_2083

Now, that’s special treatment, when Santa comes to see you.

jakexmasoutingE_2079

jakexmasoutingE_2078

I’m not sure who enjoyed the petting more, Jake or Santa!

Aby-a-Day – December 19: In Soviet Christmas, cats deck you (Fashion Friday)

Last week I decked Jacoby out in his holiday finest. But then, we went to Petco to see Santa Claus, and a funny thing happened…

jakexmasfashionC03021

Yeah, we kind of found more holiday gear for his wardrobe.

jakexmasfashionC03027

Like this Elf costume complete with jingle bell “shoes.”

jakexmasfashionC03023

Green is definitely Jake’s colour.

jakexmasfashionC03085

And then we found…

jakexmasfashionC03095

…Reindeer antlers!

jakexmasfashionC03102

And they’re not just reindeer antlers. They’re red and green plaid reindeer antlers!

jakexmasfashionC03074

Yeah, it just doesn’t get much better than red and green plaid reindeer antlers.

jakexmasfashionC03121

Except…remember last week I mentioned I wanted to get Jake a fugly Xmas sweater…but I couldn’t find one? Well, guess what they had at Petco?

jakexmasfashionC03186

Unattractive holiday sweaters!

jakexmasfashionC03167

Yep…Admittedly, it’s more Neo-Fug rather than the Classic Fugly Sweater from the late 60’s to mid 80’s…but it’s definitely on the right track, don’t you think?

jakexmasfashionC03188

And you know what makes the sweater even better?

jakexmasfashionC03193

A red and green plaid holiday trapper hat!

jakexmasfashionC03194

Oh, yeah. Now Jake’s ready for Christmas! Bring it on.

Aby-a-Day – November 22: “Feather” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Feather.”

jakepetcoC00368

Birds, of course, have feathers. And when we went to Petco last Sunday, Jacoby was very interested in the budgies.

jakepetcoC00364

Or maybe he was just hungry?

jakepetcoC00400

jakepetcoC00374

The birds didn’t seem very upset that a big brown predator was just outside their enclosure? Maybe they knew he couldn’t get at them?

jakepetcoC00398

I really wonder what Jake would do if he ever encountered a bird that wasn’t behind plexiglas.

Aby-a-Day – November 21: Gun-Hee’s first trip to Petco (Friday Flashback)

Jacoby isn’t the only Aby who loved going to Petco. Gun-Hee loved it, too.

gunhee-petcotoys1905

These photos were taken on 6 January 2007, 10 days before Gun-Hee’s 4th month birthday. He had a great time playing with the dog toys.

gunhee-petcotoys2906

How much fun must it be to sit in a bin full of toys that are the same size you are?

gunhee-petcobirds903

Gun-Hee was not all that impressed by the budgies.

gunhee-petcomice1907

The small rodents, however…

gunhee-petcomice2908

those were much more to his liking!

Aby-a-Day – November 20: Shop therapy

After Jacoby’s assessment, we passed a Petco on the way home and decided to stop and pick up a few things since it was right there…and Jake could come inside with us.

jakepetcoC00344

Jake was all for a little shopping excursion.

jakepetcoC00409

He sat in the shopping cart’s baby seat very nicely and didn’t even try to get out and walk around.

jakepetcoC00432

He was, however, very interested in this display of dog and cat beds.

jakepetcoC00437

I think he saw something he really liked!

jakepetcoC00448

As if we don’t have enough cat napping spots in our house already – there’s more cat furniture than human furniture!

jakepetcoC00474

For a boycat, Jake is a very good shopper.

jakepetcoC00478

He waits so patiently in the cart.

jakepetcoC00527

And he advises us on our selections.

jakepetcoC00490

He really does enjoy going out and helping us shop.

jakepetcoC00510

We buy a lot of litter in one trip, especially in winter, so we are sure never to run out. Currently, we use a blend of Blue Buffalo Walnut and EverClean.

jakepetcoC00551

When we got to the canned food aisle, Jake really perked up.

jakepetcoC00566

It’s really interesting – even though cans of food have no food-like smell, he definitely recognises the cans as “food.” He even tried to get onto the shelf with the cans!

jakepetcoC00572

“Heeeyyy…why’s the bag with the Aby on it marked down?”

jakepetcoC00579

I think he’s sulking a bit here because I told him he doesn’t actually get to eat any of this food. The ProPlan is the girls’ food; Jake is, of course, on a strict UT prescription diet.

jakepetcoC00582

The least fun part of any shopping trip is checkout. But even then, Jake just sat in the cart and observed.

jakepetcoC00596

I think he was having a good time watching the clerk scan all the little cans of food.

jakepetcoC00602

I was so proud of how nicely he sat while we had our purchases rung up.

jakepetcoC00604

All the Petco salespeople were pretty impressed, too. They don’t see many cats come into the store in general, let alone one who’s so blase about shopping.

jakepetcoC00609

I was happy that Jake enjoyed the trip to Petco so much, especially after his hissing and growling at the assessment. He didn’t growl or hiss once the entire time he was in the shopping cart. He didn’t even meow very much. It really proved to me that it isn’t being away from his home – or his stroller – that upsets him, but it’s something about the actual therapy visit process. So I think the break will be a good thing.

Aby-a-Day – September 5: Trapper Jake (Fashion Friday)

So last week we happened to be in Allston and I saw the Unleashed by Petco shop. Of course I had to check it out.

jakehatIMG_5579

And I found this trapper hat, which of course I had to get for Jacoby.

jakehatIMG_5592

jakehatIMG_5597

I mean, just look at it.

jakehatIMG_5576

jakehatIMG_5575

It’s awesome.

jakekyliehatIMG_5571

And chicks really dig an awesome hat on a guy, you know.

jakehatIMG_5584

jakeangelhatIMG_5585

jakeangelhatIMG_5586

jakeangelhatIMG_5587

Well…

angelnohatIMG_5589

…Okay, maybe not ALL chicks. I stand corrected.

Aby-a-Day – November 9: “Sale” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Sale.”

kyliedressE_6196

I found this cute little dress with a plaid skirt on sale at Petco a while back.

kyliedressE_6197

Not only was it on sale – for only a dollar! – but it was actually designed for cats! I’m not sure which impressed me most, the fact that it was only a buck or the fact that it was actually meant to be worn by a feline.

angeldressE_7347

I know they always say that redheads shouldn’t wear red, but don’t you think it suits Angel?

angeldressE_7358

She seems to really like it.

angeldressE_7368

She definitely seems to know how cute she is in it!

angeljakedressE_7369

You would think that bratty little brothers would respect other people’s photo shoots, wouldn’t you?

Aby-a-Day – July 18: Pouncing Playground Bungalow

We went to Petco the other day and saw this cute Planet Petco Pouncing Playground Bungalow.

boxlabel_5309

It’s basically a fancy cardboard box with a scratcher.

boxlabel_5311

Except it has catnip and cute stickers to decorate it!

tessieboxtoy_5312

Tessie was the first to come check it out.

jaketessieboxtoy_5316

Jacoby read the instructions for me and made sure the catnip was fresh.

jakeboxtoy_5317

Then, it was time to start building!

jakeboxtoy_5320

Yes, Jake…of course you can help!

jakeboxtoy_5325

First, we built the base and put in the scratch pads…

jakeboxtoy_5326

…which Jake immediately tested to make sure they were up to code.

jakeangelboxtoy_5328

Okay, Jake. I think we’re good.

jakeangelboxtoy_5329

No, seriously, Jake. I think we’ve got this.

jakeboxtoy_5332

Next, we added the catnip to the scratch pads.

jaketessiieboxtoy_5333

jaketessiieboxtoy_5334

Jake and Tessie were responsible for making sure it was evenly distributed.

jaketessiieboxtoy_5337

They were very thorough.

jaketessiieboxtoy_5338

Jake even made sure the scratching still worked once the catnip was applied.

jaketessiieboxtoy_5341

Then the walls went up!

jakekylieboxtoy_5344

There’s still a little porch to scratch on outside the house.

jakeboxtoy_5345

Jake checked out the front door.

jakeboxtoy_5346

Yep, the scratchers still work. Good job, Jake!

jaketessiieboxtoy_5349

jakeboxtoy_5351

The bungalow was carefully inspected both inside and out.

jakeboxtoy_5353

Then the roof was raised!

angelboxtoy_5373

jakeboxtoy_5360

tessieboxtoyE_5359

jakekylietessboxtoy_5363

Everyone helped with decorating the little house with the stickers.

jakeboxtoy_5377

jakeboxtoy_5376

Jake tested out the scratcher on the porch again, just to make sure.

jaketessieboxtoyE_5391

It’s also good for just sitting on, as it turns out.

jakeangelboxtoyE_5399

jakeangelboxtoyE_5400

The bungalow isn’t perfect. The roof comes off a little too easily for my liking.

jakeangelboxtoyE_5402

jakeangelboxtoyE_5404

Angel didn’t seem to mind, though.

jakeangelboxtoyE_5406

Fire lazors! Yes, overall, I’d say this little house was a big hit. And I have to admit, it was a lot of fun to build!

Petco makes a castle and a skyscraper, too, and they even have a YouTube video about the set.

Aby-a-Day – October 28: This ain’t my first rodeo

Today Jacoby and I went to the big Halloween costume contest at the Quincy Petco.

jakesaward

I found an incredible cowboy hat and kerchief at Petsmart last weekend (on sale for 50% off if you can believe it) and the instant I saw it, I knew it would be awesome on Jake.

He just needed a jacket to go with it. So, I took one of his harness-coats and added a little cowhide…

jakescostumeIMG_9118 jakescostumeIMG_9119

…and voilà! Jake’s a cowboy!

jakepetcocontestIMG_9184

At Petco, they had a little runway set up. Of course, Jake rocked it.

jakepetcocontestIMG_9167

jakepetcocontestIMG_9178

It was the Feline Agility course all over again.

jakepetcocontestIMG_1051

The great thing about this costume is that it’s also a harness, and it’s warm. Perfect for a late October outing.

cowboyjakepetcoIMG_1056

Jake can move in it comfortably, and the hat doesn’t have to be on his head for the costume to work. He can have it pushed back and it still looks good.

cowboyjakepetcoIMG_1042

I need to get a cowgirl costume, now, so that we match. It seems that human-pet matching outfits are all the rage. Besides the general costume contest, Blue Buffalo sponsored a special contest for the best lookalikes.

jakecocopetcoIMG_9256

Since my Cleopatra outfit is in storage, I decided we’d go as Ellsbury and Pedroia.

jakecocopetcoIMG_9232

jakecocopetcoIMG_9237

Well…okay, we just wore Red Sox jerseys and hats. But he’s named Jacoby, and my jersey has Pedroia’s name and number, so there you go.

jakecocopetcoIMG_9255

But it worked! We won!

petcokidsIMG_9243

It was a great party, too. There was face-painting, a scavenger hunt, cupcakes with worms in them, and a lot of great dogs – and cats – in costume.

mrpixelpetcoIMG_9227

I was thrilled to see another cat in the contest. And look! He was even in a stroller!

mrpixelpetcoIMG_9230

This is Mr. Pixel, aka SuperCat. He’s the first cat I’ve seen in a stroller outside of a cat show.

jakemrpixelpetcoIMG_9252

We let Mr. Pixel and Jake check out each other – and their pimped out rides.

jakemrpixelpetcoIMG_9244

jakemrpixelpetcoIMG_9245

jakemrpixelpetcoIMG_9250

Amazingly, they got along pretty well. I was surprised there was no hissing!

jakesprizepetcoIMG_9242

I was amused that he won a bag of BLUE Longevity, the cat food with the Aby on the front I noticed for the first time last week at Petsmart. How serendipitous!

jakesprizeIMG_9270

You may also notice that the bag is full of bite holes…

jakesprizeIMG_9262

jakesprizeIMG_9269

…while I was putting the stroller away in the bike closet, Jake decided he wanted a snack and attacked his prize!

jakesprizeIMG_9268

I guess that means it’s good food, if he wants to tear into the bag to eat it! And, I guess that’s the perfect end to a good day.

Aby-a-Day – September 2: Something fishy

I love taking Jacoby to Petco.

jakepetcoN9125

We usually hang out in the more feline-oriented aisles, but the last time we went together, I was building a new tank for our two African Dwarf Frogs, Harold and Kumar, so we meandered on over to the aquatic part of the store.

jakepetcoN9126

“Whattaya mean they’re not for eating?”

jakepetcoN9139

I’m not sure why, exactly, he thought the tankscaping gravel would be a good place to sit, but he climbed up on those bags all by himself.

jakepetcoN9141

I think he’s had his photo taken so many times in his life, he’s starting to develop a sense of what makes a good backdrop to show himself off to his best advantage.

Aby-a-Day – April 7: Who let the cat into the bag?

When we were at Petco, I also picked up a Leopard Crinkle Sack with Catnip. It’s actually a lot more plush and nice-looking in person than it appears on their website, and I thought Jacoby would like it.

jakecrincklesack4

Oh, did he ever!

jakecrincklesack3

I took the tag off, set it down in the living room, and BANG! It was occupied!

jakecrincklesack1

“This is obviously mine,” he says. “It matches the inside of my house, my carrier and my harness!”

jakecrincklesack2

And of course, once I started taking photos, he started posing! Such a silly cat!

Aby-a-Day – April 5: Out with the old and in with the new

Last week we went to Petco to pick up our usual necessities, canned and dry cat food for the girls and kitty litter (including a great big bag of that new Blue Walnut Litter that I can’t wait to try!) and while we were there, I decided it was time to replace the beloved bedroom scratchers. We have many different scratching options in our apartment, both horizontal and vertical, with a variety of surfaces from carpet to sisal to cardboard. But one of the most favoured scratching toy is the Petlinks Dream Curl, or, as it’s mostly referred to, the S-Curve. The one we had (our second) was getting really raggedy, so I thought it was due to be replaced.

Jake-newScurve3

I found a nice Wedgwood blue-toned one, which matches the colours in the bedroom nicely. We barely had time to bring it in and set it down before Jacoby came over to christen it!

Tessie helped, of course. Actually, everyone managed to get a scratch in before we’d gotten it into the bedroom.

Jake-newScurve2

Scratch, scratch, scratch…

Jake-newScurve1

Jake really puts his back into it!

Jake-oldScurve4

Jake also helped me take the old S-curve (and the old simple scratching post, which was also replaced with a new Scratcher’s Delight Refillable Cardboard Scratching Post) out to the garbage room.

Jake-oldScurve3

We actually found that little upright post in the trash room over a year ago! It was practically brand-new at the time and our cats loved it. So far, they haven’t embraced the new post the way they have the new S-curve. But I’m sure they will…it’s only been a week.

Jake-oldScurve2

Jake seems a little sad at saying goodbye to his old S-curve…

Jake-oldScurve1

Farewell, clawed and tattered friend.

Aby-a-Day – December 20: Our Christmas Angel

Angel isn’t the ham Jacoby is, but she will indulge me and pose for some silly Christmas photos.

angelxmasN8256

This year, Petco was selling some really nice Santa hats specifically made for cats. I chose the “Mrs. Claus” hat and scarf for Angel, and I also put on the Jingle Star cat collar because Jake was wearing the Build-a-Bear Christmas cape.

angelxmasN8258

I have to give Petco some serious props: they’re making more and more holiday things for cats. Every year, I find more choices for cats at both Halloween and Christmas.

angelxmasN8268

Granted, the cats may not be super-thrilled with Petco’s increased cat costume selection…

Aby-a-Day – November 15: You can lead a cat to water…

Ever since Jacoby had his second Urinary Crystal Incident, I have wanted to get a cat water fountain for the cats.

newfountainN7330

The last time we went to Petco, the very fountain I wanted, the Pioneer Pet Stainless Steel Fountain, just happened to be on sale!

newfountainN7325

I set it up just outside the kitchen, where we currently have one of their two watering stations set up. Then, I waited to see what would happen.

jakenewfountainN7308

In a completely shocking turn of events, Jacoby was the first to investigate (What a surprise, I know).

jakenewfountainN7313

jakenewfountainN7315

jakenewfountainN7316

Jake’s a huge fan of drinking out of the bathroom faucet, so I was very interested to see what he would do with the fountain. At first, he examined it thoroughly, but didn’t drink.

jakenewfountainN7320

He was very interested in the little waterfall section.

jakenewfountainN7321

Or, he was interested in his reflection on the shiny stainless steel. It was kind of hard to tell.

jakenewfountainN7322

I was surprised he didn’t stick his hands in the water. He didn’t actually drink out of it during his preliminary reconnaissance mission; I think in part he wasn’t quite sure which side he was meant to drink from!
