Aby-a-Day – 5 Augusti: Necks-level logistics (Thursday Things)

The only downside to having Emma stay with us was the fact that she occupied the spare bedroom, where Alfred and Lorelai eat their daily chicken necks.

freddynecks_7785 1

freddynecks_7786 1

There is a very good reason for this.

dashroryzaknecks_7788 1

Rory and Freddy eat their necks wicked fast. Sometimes, Freddy will be finished with his neck before I can get the door shut!

dashnecks_7778

Dashiell and Izaak, however, eat their necks at a more leisurely pace.

dashzaknecks_7789 1

Which is somewhat ironic, considering Zak is the entire reason we have the evening neck ritual at all. But he’ll look at his neck, and then try to follow me out of the room. It’s like, dude…eat your damn neck! You wait all day for it and yell at me until I give it to you!

roryzaknecks_7791 1

It’s arrangement that works well. Freddy and Rory scarf their necks down, growl at each other if one tries to steal the other’s neck, and can pretty much defend their necks from one another. Dash and Zak respect each other’s boundaries and generally don’t try to poach the other’s neck (although sometimes they do trade).

dashroryzaknecks_7809 1

So you can see the problem. Dash and Zak aren’t accustomed to competition. Meanwhile, Rory…

freddynecks_7812 1

…and Freddy are hovering like vultures, just waiting for an opening to swoop in and snatch a neck away from one of the boys.

rorydashnecks_7814 1

Rory…NO!

rorynecks_7799 1

“Whattaya mean, ‘no,’ Mom? He’s not eating it!”

rorynecks_7815 1

Finally, Dash ate about half his neck, and I gave up and let Rory have the rest. Better her than Freddy; she needs the calories more than he does. And I needed to go eat dinner with Björn, Kalle and Emma.

rorynecks_7802 1<

"Thanks, Mom!"

Yeah, I'm glad we can go back to the two-room system.

Aby-a-Day – 9 Oktober 2020: Pretty fly for a white guy (Photoshop Friday)

As you probably are aware, there was a Vice Presidential debate on Tuesday. The thing that has the media and the internet abuzz, though, is the fly that landed on Pence’s head and stayed there for two whole minutes. As you might imagine, the event inspired a swarm of memes. So I thought I’d wing it and make one, too…so here are Izaak and Lorelai doing what cats do when they see a flying insect.

(I posted this to the Facebook group This Cat Is PHOTOSHOPPED, and it’s already gotten over 900 reactions…and someone is now using it as their userpic! I feel so honoured!)

Aby-a-Day – 5 Maj 2020: Sink-o De Mayo (Cartoon Tuesday)

Okay, so admittedly, this is a repeat of a cartoon I did five years ago. The original sketch is above.

abycartoon174

Since Cinco de Mayo happens to fall on a Tuesday this year, I thought I would share it again.

Aby-a-Day – 25 December: The sole of Christmas (Cartoon Tuesday)

In Sweden, the main Christmas celebrating is done on 24 December. After the ritual of Donald Duck, the presents are opened and then dinner is eaten.

sverigexmas-dinnerC04091

The traditional Julbord, which Björn’s mother orchestrated every year to perfection, consists of pickled herring, smoked salmon, hard-boiled eggs with kaviar,

sverigexmas-dinnerC04085

the Julskinka (ham with mustard), boiled potatoes, Janssons Frestelse (a sort of potato casserole with anchovies), cabbage rolls (which I can totally get behind because they’re also a Russian thing), handmade köttbullar (meatballs – ours were moose, lamb and wild boar),

sverigexmas-dinnerC04083

Prinskorv (sort of like hot dogs, but better), a ball of cheese and bread, and a cheesecake.

sverigexmas-dinnerC04086

This was our first year assembling the feast ourselves, and the first we have done at home instead of going to Jönköping. Beer, wine and shots of aquavit are usually drunk before, during, and after the meal, but this year we also added my kickass eggnog with rum, tequila, whiskey and hazelnut liqueur. Because, hey, let’s start our own traditions! (I also introduced the hanging and filling of stockings, which we open on Christmas day, because that was MY tradition. I still have the stocking I was given on my very first Christmas, when I was six months old.

The one Swedish Jul tradition I am not completely onboard with is the Christmas Day dinner of lutfisk served with potatoes and peas. Not that lutfisk is bad…it’s just bland. It’s basically like eating hard-boiled egg whites. Which is great, I love hard-boiled eggs. Just not necessarily for Christmas dinner. And I don’t really like peas all that much, either. We would always eat it at Björn’s mom’s house…but this year, we are having goose and starting our own tradition (which also includes the oranges my mom always used to put in our stockings).

lutefisk

The first Christmas I spent in Sweden, I drew this silly little drawing of a “lute fisk” as a joke for Björn’s brother…and today I got the idea to update it a bit with Abys. And a Singapura. Just a sketch for now, but…Happy Christmas, everyone!

Aby-a-Day – 10 September: There ain’t no party like a South Boston party, ‘cos a Southie party don’t stop! (Medical Monday)

Last week, we went to the South Boston Animal Hospital’s grand opening party at their new 9 West Broadway location…the building I used to live in.

jakeSBAHpartyC07587

After Jacoby and I toured the medical facilities, we went to check out the new exam rooms. At the old location, there were only two rooms…I don’t remember how many are at the new place, but it’s at least double that.

jakeSBAHpartyC07595

One room was set up as a photo room, with decorations and props, and guests were invited to use them and take photos. As you can see, there was a luau theme. So we started with the lei, and shot a few poses…

jakeSBAHpartyC07612

…before adding the grass skirt.

jakeSBAHpartyC07599

Jake wasn’t sure about that bit.

jakeSBAHpartyC07603

Okay, Jake, we’ll take it off and move on.

jakeSBAHpartyC07627

In the new location, there were exam rooms specifically for cats! No dogs allowed.

jakeSBAHpartyC07620

In one exam room, there was a rocking cardboard scratcher.

jakeSBAHpartyC07636

I didn’t think Jake would go for it at all, but he surprised me. He ROCKED that thing!

jakeSBAHpartyC07643

Then he noticed the mechanical mouse-in-the-cheese toy.

jakeSBAHpartyC07647

The yellow plastic mouse would pop out of the white plastic cheese wedge at random.

jakeSBAHpartyC07648

Apparently not randomly enough for our Jake.

jakeSBAHpartyC07655

“When the bloody hell is this sodding thing going to pop out?”

jakeSBAHpartyC07657

And then, finally…

jakeSBAHpartyC07662

“Well, that wasn’t worth all the excitement, now was it?” No, Jake…and welcome to about half the TV shows I watch.

jakeSBAHpartyC07630

Next we encountered a good, old-fashioned scratching post.

jakeSBAHpartyC07633

Finally, a toy I can relate to! Thought Jake.

jakeSBAHpartyC07635

“Oh, scratching post…you understand me.”

jakeSBAHpartyC07673

In another exam room, there was a catch-the-string machine.

jakeSBAHpartyC07691

Despite having a similar toy at home that has, the entire length of its career, been completely and utterly ignored.

jakeSBAHpartyC07696

Oh, but downstairs, it’s the Best. Toy. Ever.

jakeSBAHpartyC07700

jakeSBAHpartyC07704

jakeSBAHpartyC07719

And you know when we went back upstairs the toy we have? Totally ignored.

jakedrnatSBAHpartyC07723

But no playtesting session of the exam rooms would be complete without a bit of a schmooze with the vet.

jakedrnatSBAHpartyC07733

Jake and Dr. Natalie really did have a connection.

jakeSBAHpartyC07736

I know I miss her…I wonder if Jake does, too?

jakeSBAHpartyC07742

At the snacks table, there was, of course, ham…and Jake did get a bit.

jakeSBAHpartyC07744

He handled it extremely awkwardly, but he got some ham.

SBAHpartyC07665

Finally, I just have to share this lovely painting of a white cat and a martini. It reminded me of Kylie.

Aby-a-Day – 24 June: “The strangeness will wear off” (Silly Sunday)

So the last few days, I have had a lot of word-heavy, photo-light posts.

freddypollackIMG_3519

So I think we both need a little break.

freddypollackIMG_3520

So here is Alfred.

freddypollackIMG_3521

Going crazy.

freddypollackIMG_3522

With a Jackson Pollack catnip kicker toy.

freddypollackIMG_3523

You’re welcome.

Aby-a-Day – 17 March: My goodness, my Guinness (Silly Saturday)

At this local pub we go to for book club meetings and the occasional pub quiz was festooned with these silly Guinness pint glass St. Patrick’s Day floppy hats when we were there last Thursday. Of course, we had to snag one to show the LunaTicks. It turned out to be just the boys…Angel, sagely, made herself scarce.

loganguinnessC02184

Logan was in his favourite brown nest bed and I couldn’t drag him out just for some silly photos. So, I just put the hat on his bed. I think he liked it.

freddyguinnessC02187

When Alfred came into the room, I moved the hat to our tree stump cat tree.

freddyguinnessC02191

freddyguinnessC02192

He was actually a little afraid of it.

freddyguinnessC02193

He’s usually so brash and fearless, it was highly amusing to watch him be so wary of a new thing.

freddyguinnessC02200

I tossed it on the floor, and I think for a second he wondered if it was alive.

freddyguinnessC02201

He examined it thoroughly, inside…

freddyguinnessC02205

…and out.

freddyguinnessC02207

Then I did that slightly mean thing that all cat people do…I made the “Pssssst! sound and he jumped back.

freddyguinnessC02213

Which actually might be a good thing. Maybe I can put it on places I don’t want him to go.

jakeguinnessC02241

Jacoby, on the other hand, was unfazed…or should I say, unfezed?

jakeguinnessC02214

This is Jake’s 8th St. Patrick’s Day, of course, and he used to live at Ground Zero for the legendary Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade. I guess it’s all old hat to him.

loganguinnessC02220

Meanwhile, Logan came out of his bed and joined us on the sofa. I came up for a different way for him to “wear” the hat.

loganguinnessC02222

I’m not sure if he liked it or not. With that face, it’s hard to tell sometimes.

loganguinnessC02232

Okay, then. Guess he didn’t like it. Well, St. Patty’s Day isn’t really a thing in Sweden anyway, apart from some bars.

Aby-a-Day – 7 April: House wine

I tend to prefer red wine, but when I drink white I prefer Pinot Grigio. I’ve also taken to drinking wine in boxes because it’s lighter, more convenient, and better for the environment! It’s also easier to store.

housewineIMG_3602 1

Over the weekend I went to pick up some more, and discovered this Original House Wine from Walla Walla, Washington.

housewineIMG_3629 1

Well, the moment I saw it, I knew this had to happen.

housewineIMG_3628 1

Because, seriously, what could be better than opening your fridge and seeing Dr. House glaring at you?

jakehousewineIMG_3631 1

Of course Jacoby helped me.

jakehousewineIMG_3635

If you’re an Abyssinian, you help. It’s what you do.

jakehousewineIMG_3646

(Sounds like an ad for Geico, doesn’t it?)

jakehousewineIMG_3639 1

Jake approves of my handiwork! Dr. House, on the other hand, thinks I’m an idiot for drinking wine in a box.

Aby-a-Day – 26 March: “Nuts” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Nuts.”

jakenuts

Jacoby doesn’t have his anymore…so I can’t exactly fulfill the Photo Hunt theme today, but hey. Close enough!

Aby-a-Day – 22 March: Here comes Jakey Cottontail (Cartoon Tuesday)

So this happened. I don’t know…Easter, Abys being known as “bunny cats,” a really bad pun and a chance to draw Jacoby being goofy and Angel doing one of her patented face-pawlms.

egg

I really wish I had the time and braincells to do real cartoons right now. I miss Photoshop so much. However, I may play with this one some more using the iPad Pro.

Aby-a-Day – December 29: Snö! (Cartoon Tuesday)

It finally snowed here in Skövde yesterday! Not quite a white Christmas, but close.

jakesnow-h20Colour

I’ve been drawing on my iPad again, using both Paper by 53 and Photoshop Sketch. This picture of Jacoby is actually based on the view of the first snow from Björn’s living room window. I’m pretty proud of it, since I haven’t been drawing that much lately.

lutefisk

Of course, I also drew this picture of Lutfisk after a traditional Christmas day dinner at Björn’s parents’ house…so don’t expect a brilliant comeback of my cartoons anytime soon…

Aby-a-Day – September 25: Angel we have heard on high (Friday Flashback)

I guess I shouldn’t be so surprised at Angel embracing our wall climbing system.

angel3990

The very first night I adopted her and brought her to my mom’s house, Angel did this…

angel3985

…and this…

angel3986

…and this!

angelonhigh

And then the next morning, she got up the nerve to jump the gap and stand on top of the TV cabinet!

angel0508c

A few months later, we were installing an IKEA Pax wardrobe, and before it was even finished, she was on top of it! I don’t even know how she got up there!

angel0509b

And she tried to go even higher!

angel0508a

For such a skittish kitty, Angel really loves to climb.

angel0723a

I guess this is kind of anti-clime-actic…

Aby-a-Day – May 22: Jake’s Finnish crown (Fashion Friday)

Because “Jacoby with a Finnish cat toy on his head” didn’t have nearly the same ring…

jakeSeacoast2015C00427

Ha ha, get it? RING? Because it’s one of the crocheted rings that Sanna sent us…oh, all right.

jakeSeacoast2015C00423

I put it on Jake’s head because I could, and because it was made of metallic gold thread, it looks like a little crown. Sort of.

jakeSeacoast2015C00422

Heavy is the head that wears the gold crocheted cat ring toy?

Aby-a-Day – May 7: “Cinco de Mayo makes me long for a world in which all holidays are conveniently named after the dates on which they fall.” (Cartoon Thursday)

In my defence…this is all Kim’s fault. She showed me this photo, and well…

abycartoon174

…yeah, I could not resist. However, the perspective was kind of fun to play with.

(Click cartoon to embiggen, or you can view all cartoons in Slideshow mode on Flickr.)

Aby-a-Day – March 3: “First, we’ll make snow angels for a two hours…” (Cartoon Tuesday)

It’s funny how someone can just say one thing, and it triggers a cartoon idea. In this case, Abyfriend Harford suggested that I do a cartoon of Jacoby making a snow angel…

abycartoon165

…whereupon a lightbulb went off, and I envisioned Jake making a snow Angel.

(If you recall, Jake doesn’t like tomatoes…)

(Click cartoon to embiggen, or you can view all cartoons in Slideshow mode on Flickr.)

Aby-a-Day – November 17: Hooked (Hipstamatic Monday)

Hookless fishing lure toys are always popular. And why wouldn’t they be? They’re made of fur and feathers, and they look like bugs, mice and other small, edible creatures. What’s not to love?

hipsta-angeltoyIMG_5873

Angel really loves them.

hipsta-angeltoyIMG_5875

She finds them very alluring.

hipsta-angeltoyIMG_5876

See what I did there? A-lure-ing?

hipsta-angeltoyIMG_5874

Yeah, Angel didn’t think it was funny either.

Aby-a-Day – July 22: The Cat Lady in Red (Fashion Friday)

Last weekend at ArtBeat, Ritterbin Photography had a booth set up for free Facebook photos. Well, I said, I don’t do Facebook, but can I use them in my blog? “Of course!” was Mike’s response. Now, I don’t know how fashionable we are, but we did avail ourselves of some of the props.

CocoJakeArtBeat_2011-0059byRitterbin

Jacoby has red star sunglasses, and I am wearing a red fez.

CocoJakeArtBeat_2011-0063byRitterbin

Or, as my dad would say, “I don’t remember the name, but the fez is familiar” (Yeah, it’s a genetic problem, obviously).
