Aby-a-Day – 27 Maj: In case you were wondering about Dashiell outstide…(Thursday Things)

As you may remember, Dashiell isn’t as confident about being outside.

freddydashoutsideC02858

freddydashoutsideC02859

freddydashoutsideC02860

But he does seem more comfortable when he’s with the other cats.

freddydashoutsideC02861

freddydashoutsideC02862

freddydashoutsideC02863

So when Alfred started to run down the hill, Dash kind of followed him.

freddyoutsideC02864

freddydashoutsideC02865

freddydashoutsideC02866

I mean, okay…Dash walked down the hill, he didn’t run.

freddydashoutsideC02867

But the fact that he went on the hill at all is a huge step for him!

Aby-a-Day – 23 Maj: Run, run as fast as you can! (Swedish Sunday)

Yesterday, we had Alfred walking.

freddyoutsideC02352

freddyoutsideC02353

Today, he is running! When he wants to, he can go pretty fast.

freddyoutsideC02355

freddyoutsideC02356

Because Freddy’s a bit of a chonk, and because I suspect he has mild asthma, he tend to run with his mouth open.

freddyoutsideC02358

freddyoutsideC02359

freddyoutsideC02360

I feel so fortunate to live where we do, in an area where it’s safe to let them run free, without worrying about cars or large predators or birds of prey to worry about. And I love that the cats are smart enough to know that if they don’t stay close, they get put on the leash and they don’t get to run.

Aby-a-Day – 21 Maj: More of Izaak running (Thursday Things)

I absolutely love watching Izaak run.

zakoutsideC02395

It’s so different from the way the Abys run.

zakoutsideC02396

zakoutsideC02397

zakoutsideC02398

It’s bouncier, somehow.

zakoutsideC02399

zakoutsideC02400

zakoutsideC02401

zakoutsideC02402

I’ve also noticed he has a tendency to curl up his tail as he runs, while the Abys’ tails are either straight up or straight out.

zakoutsideC02403

zakoutside02404

zakoutsideC02405

zakoutsideC02406

Zak’s got a swagger to his stride that the Abys just don’t have. They’re more about the speed.

zakoutsideC02407

And then Zak slows down to a businesslike trot.

zakoutsideC02409

He’s clearly a cat on a mission.

Aby-a-Day – 15 Maj: Tampopo (Singapura Saturday)

The other day, a friend posted an infomeme about dandelions. I think it has some very important things to know.

dandelionmeme

We are lucky that our område’s lawn is a natural mix of grass, moss, yarrow, clover, and many different flowers including dandelions. They don’t mow it super-short or super-often, so it gets really nice and natural. There’s also no sprinkler system. If it doesn’t rain, the grass turns brown…c’est la vie. It’s so much nicer than those perfect, manicured lawns in the States.

Dandelions are also wicked fun to gallop through. Just ask Izaak.

Aby-a-Day – 1 Mars: “That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run” (Hipstamatic Monday)

I barely caught these two photos of Alfred running when we went outside yesterday. I saw him out of the corner of my eye, and caught him in the corner of the frame.

hipstafreddyrun2

They turned out okay when I cropped them, but I thought that they worked better as Hipstamatic snaps. So here you have Freddy running for no particular reason.

Aby-a-Day – 14 Januari: More snow, more fun (Thursday Things)

Since I posted last week, we’ve had a bit more snow here. I took the cats outside again on Tuesday; it was actually rather warm and the snow was perfect and not too wet or icy.

rorysnow_5810

Lorelai, of course, went pelting off into the whiteness.

boyssnow_5793

The boys, however, were less enthusiastic (and yes, I made Dashiell come out with us).

freddysnow_5811

freddysnow_5812

Eventually, Alfred stretched his legs.

dashsnow_5797

dashsnow_5798

Dash even took a little walk around the building.

zaksnow_5818

Izaak…was displeased.

rorysnow_5802

rorysnow_5804

Rory, on the other hand, was playing with the snow.

rorysnow_5823

She was having so much fun out there.

haresnow_5814

haresnow_5815

haresnow_5816

One cool thing happened, though. Watching Rory run, I saw some movement in the background. At first I thought it was Freddy, but it was a hare! I wish one of the cats had seen it, though. I’d love to see what their reaction would be!

Aby-a-Day – 10 September 2020: Runaway Rory (Thursday Things)

As I posted on Sunday, we took Alfred, Izaak and Lorelai out to the recycling bins.

roryoutside_2779

But what I didn’t tell you about is that Rory ran away.

roryoutside_4160

Like, away away.

Here’s a satellite shot of our område. At the top of the photo is our apartment building. At the lower right is the recycling bins. And at mid-lower left is where she ran…and where I lost her. We actually had her back at our apartment, the boys were ready to go in…and she ran all the way back to where that arrow is. And the sun was setting, and it was getting dark.

roryoutside_3472

We had no idea where she could be (I suspected she’d doubled back, since every time we lost track of her, she was heading back towards our building), and apart from the darkness, it was also getting cold and we had to have our dinner (pot roast, which was in danger of overcooking).

Shout out to BlanketID, here: their poster generating feature is wonderful. I created one in English and Björn translated it into Swedish. Kalle offered to go out and look for her, and at almost 11 PM, he texted me and told me he’d spotted her in the small parking lot near the tvättstugen (laundry building). Björn went out to help him lure her in with some treats and a laser pointer, and when they called her, she finally came out. Kalle caught her, and they put her on her harness and leash. She did walk back like a good girl, but she didn’t get her chicken neck that night.

roryio_3907

I knew she was in heat…but I also know there aren’t any whole tomcats in the area. Still, I thought that her training would kick in. I think I underestimated the power of hormones and instinct just a little bit. Welp…until she gets knocked up, she’s only going outside on her harness and leash.

Aby-a-Day – 6 September 2020: Running around outside (Cinema Sunday)

We took the cardboard to the recycling area today, and of course we had help.

zakrunningoutside23.48.33

We’re fortunate to have two recycling stations right in our Område. We used to have to go about half a mile to get rid of plastic, metal, and glass…which was a bitch in winter. Now, we just go a few yards.

zakfreddyrunningoutside23.47.33

Izaak and Alfred were particularly buddy-buddy today.

zakrunningoutside23.48.38

I love watching Zak run.

zakrunningoutside23.49.11

“What?”

zakfreddyrunningoutside23.50.06

I love it so much when one cat jumps over another…

roryrunningoutside23.49.07

Of course, Lorelai was with us too.

roryrunningoutside23.51.44

And, as always, she was so joyful when she was running.

roryrunningoutside23.51.44 1

Rory loves to run. She practically flies when she runs. It’s joy personified.

Here’s a little video of the three of them having fun outside.

Aby-a-Day – 25 Juli 2020: Wait, what? (Silly Saturday)

As you’ve seen this week, Dashiell is becoming increasingly comfortable with going outside, but he’s still rather easily startled.

dashroryoutside_4016

The other day, Dash was standing out in the open on the lawn when Lorelai came speeding past him.

dashroryoutside_4017

It happened so fast.

dashfreddyoutside_4018

And then, in hot pursuit, Alfred came barrelling past.

dashfreddyoutside_4019

dashfreddyoutside_4020

Look at Dash’s body language. He’s completely thinking, “What just happened?”

Aby-a-Day – 5 Juli: A walk outside (Cinema Sunday)

When we take out recyclables, we often take Izaak, Lorelai and Alfred with us. I made a little movie of us walking over there. I also tried to capture the difference between the Singapura gait and the Abyssinian gait, so there’s some slo-mo incorporated in the video.

On the way back, I took still photos.

roryslide_3517

For a moment there, I thought Rory was going to go down the slide…

roryslide_3518

…but, no…

roryslide_3519

…she took the stairs like a perfect lady.

zakslide_3521

Zak on the other hand…

zakslide_3522

zakslide_3523

zakslideClose_3523

zakslideClose_3524

…Zak barrelled down the hill next to the slide like a bat out of hell.

dashbalcony_3505

I had tried to get Dashiell to come along with us. He was at the door…but I couldn’t get him to go out on his own. Since we were going to the recycling bins and not just outside, I didn’t force him.

dashbalconyzakfreddyoutside_3507

When he saw Zak and Freddy having fun outside when we got back to our building, I think he regretted his decision. Ah, well…maybe next time, Dash.

Aby-a-Day – 28 Juni 2020: The Mighty Izaak (Singapura Sunday)

When the cats go outside, the Abyssinians bolt out the door and run as fast and as far as they can.

zakoutside_3386

zakoutside_3387

But not Izaak. Zak…well, the best way to describe it is, Zak marches out the door and onto the grass.

zakoutside_3388

He also loves to hunt when he’s outside. Wonder what he sees?

bee_3393

bee_3393

Oh! A honey bee! Zak, please leave that little guy alone…we need all the bees we can get!

zakoutsideClose_3465

zakoutsideClose_3466

That’s not to say that Zak doesn’t run. He does.

freddyzakoutside_3450

He’s usually chasing one of the other cats, but oh, he runs.

zakoutside_E3329

He’s such a sturdy little man. As I mentioned before, someone compared him to Ron Swanson…and apart from the lack of mustache, it’s an apt comparison.

zakoutside_3319

I mean, look at him.

zaktree_3377

Finally, I have this photo. In my opinion, this is Zak’s first iconic photo. Jacoby had a few: Sitting on the carousel, posing in his hat and boots, and the one of him wearing his parka in the snow, among others

Aby-a-Day – 5 April 2020: More fun outside in the sunshine (Swedish Sunday)

Today I am sharing the rest of the outside adventure photos I took a couple of week ago but never posted. Starting with Dashiell and Lorelai outside.

roryoutside_1409

I love this one of Rory watching birds fly overhead.

zakoutside_163547

zakoutside_163538

Björn took these two of a very determined Izaak.

dashzakoutside_1398

Zak and Dash are such buddies.

freddyoksanaoutside_1400

Our upstairs neighbour, Oksana (Markis’ human), loves Freddy because he is so cuddly. Apparently Markis is not much for snuggling his humans.

freddyoksanaoutside_1404

She loves the fact Freddy lets her just hold him.

freddyoksanaoutside_1405

She used to come downstairs just to get some cuddle time…haven’t been able to do that in a while, though.

roryzakoutside_1522

dashfreddyoutside_1523

It’s fun to watch them chase each other.

zakoutside_1520

And to finish the collection, a couple of very cute portraits. Here’s Zak in the sunshine.

Aby-a-Day – 5 Mars 2020: It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s SuperFreddy! (Thursday Things)

As you saw yesterday, Alfred went a little bit crazy running around in the snow when we had it. He was the last one who wanted to come in from the cold.

freddysnowC01429

He just wanted to run and run….

freddysnowC01442

It was a little frustrating. I was only wearing a hoody so I would be as cold as the unclothed cats, and I was ready to go in, too.

freddysnowC01689

freddysnowC01691

He broke away from me at the door and made a beeline for the swing set that is always so popular in summer.

freddysnowC01700

He was wicked hard to catch.

freddysnowC01712

And he was super naughty! First, he peed in the snow. AGAIN.

freddysnowC01731

Then he moved on and started digging. I thought he was just playing with the snow…

freddysnowC01736

…And it looked like that was all it was, at first.

freddysnowC01744

But no. And, yes, that is exactly what it looks like. He pooped in the snow, too! I feel a little bad about leaving it there in the play area, but I guess kids won’t be swinging anytime soon.

freddysnowC01766

freddysnowC01768

freddysnowC01769

Soon after, he ran back towards our house. Guess that’s why he didn’t want to go back in. But I have never seen him go to the bathroom outside anytime except in snow. Weirdo.

hareprintssnowC01696

While I was out there in the “backyard,” I saw some things that I wouldn’t have had Freddy not run back there. Like hare tracks.

magpiesnowprintsC01753

And bird landing/take-off prints. This is probably a magpie.

birdsnowprintsC01763

birdsnowprintsC01790

I love bird footprints in snow.

wingsnowprintC01761

I also love wingprints.

birdsnowprintsC01779

I think this is a jackdaw picking something up.

birdsnowprintsC01784

I am guessing this is another magpie.

birdsnowprintsC01787

Walking and then a take-off. Magpies make tailprints, so this is either a crow or a jackdaw.

catsnowprintsC01794

Of course, there were also some cat footprints.

crocussnowC01685

As snowy as it looks, it was also melting fast.

crocussnowC01684

Crocuses are already blooming!

And, as you can see, a large area at the back of our building was all green grass. I think we’ll be lucky if we get any more snow this year.

Aby-a-Day – 29 Februari 2020: Happy Leap Day!! (Swedish Saturday)

Today is leap day! A very special day that happens only once every four years.

rorysnowC01230

Since it snowed this week, I took the cats out to play in the snow.

rorysnowC01231

rorysnowC01232

As you can imagine, Lorelai loved it.

rorysnowC01233

rorysnowC01234

She is our smallest, lightest cat, so you would think she would get cold out there. I mean, Jacoby would shiver in 10°C.

rorysnowC01235

Not our Rory, though.

rorysnowC01236

She loves to be outside, regardless of the weather or the temperature.

rorysnowC01244

And you know I wouldn’t be able to get her to keep a coat on…

rorysnowC01245

rorysnowC01248

She did a lot of leaping out in the snow…

Aby-a-Day – 20 Maj: It’s not as easy to make a 29 second video of a cat running down a hill as it looks…(Movie Monday)

So I am pretty proud of my Little House on the Prairie spoof with Izaak running down the hill that I posted yesterday. Mainly because it looks so perfect…but it wasn’t as easy as it looked.

Someone on Facebook asked me why I put Zak in Slo-Mo. Well…the reason is…he runs too fast when he gets going. This is the first part of what I ended up using…a whopping five seconds.

Here’s the ending bit. Don’t blink or you’ll miss it. So yeah, you can see why it was slowed down.

But it really took a lot more work than it looked. We had Lorelai and Alfred out there, too…my original thought was to have Rory and Zak running together down the hill. That just didn’t work out. Here are all the takes we did…with the original sound.

Aby a Day – 19 May: Little Cat on the Prairie (Singapura Cinema Sunday)

Since I moved to Sweden, I have absolutely fallen in love with Family Guy. Something about the razor-sharp New England sense of humour and the pitch perfect spoofs of pop culture…what’s not to love?

zakrun2

Recently, we happened to see Seth MacFarlane’s spoof of the iconic closing credits of the classic 1970’s television show Little House on the Prairie. Then a couple of days ago, whilst outside with Lorelai and Izaak…I got inspired.

zakrun3

It’s been rainy and grey the past few days, but today it was sunny and not windy and just…perfect for what I had in mind. It took us a while to get it just right…but at the end of the day, I am pretty proud of myself.
