I just want to feature Izaak today. He is my constant little buddy; as I am typing this he’s sitting next to me on the sofa. I think he is trying to fill the hole Jacoby left when he died.
He has the funniest run. And he doesn’t walk…he trots with a swagger.
He loves to sleep under the blankets with me.
I think it started the first time we met.
We bonded over the crazy trip from Stockholm back to Skövde.
He slept on my lap the whole ride home.
Look at him looking at me on his first night here.
He helped me pack for Lorelai’s first cat show (he couldn’t go because he hadn’t gotten his Swedish pedigree yet).
He started in on his chicken necks before he even had his adult teeth!
Zak loved running outside right from the start.
He charmed the judges at his first show.
He’s a stubborn, goofy, talkative boy. In typical Singapura fashion, he’s decided who his person his and there’s no arguing with him.
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, one of Dashiell’s favourite afternoon napping spots is at the end of the sofa.
He’s a big, gangly yearling, but he manages to get his legs rolled up in a tight ball.
…And, the camera woke him up. Sorry, Dash!
The other day, we were watching YouTube videos on the television, and I wanted to show Björn the video of Lorelai stalking the geese, which he hadn’t seen yet.
After that, YouTube autoplayed the next video, which was the one of Izaak sitting on top of Dashiell.
Dash was intensely interested in seeing him and his buddy on TV. And then the cutest thing happened.
He reached his paw out and touched Zak! It was so sweet, so tentative…but he definitely recognised his friend.
Then a different video autoplayed, one of Angel and Zak outside. And Dash patted Zak’s image again! I have never seen a cat do this before. I have seen them play with images on screen, but not recognise another cat that they know.
I made a little video of him…but he went behind the screen looking for the cats. I did finally capture him patting Zak.
Björn took these photos while I was sleeping…
These were actually taken after we rushed Jacoby to the hospital…but never brought him home.
Izaak was sleeping on me exactly the way Jake used to do.
It’s almost like Zak knew what was going to happen before the rest of us did.
In both New England and Sweden, a pleasant sunny day is like a special gift, not to be squandered. One must go out and enjoy the good weather while it lasts…because, in both places, wait five minutes and it’ll change.
Take today, for example. It was raining so hard that it woke me up. Anyone who knows me, knows what a difficult thing that is to do.
But a couple of weeks ago? It was gorgeous outside, and we absolutely needed to get outside and enjoy it.
And oh, how Lorelai and Izaak enjoyed it.
The way they interact outside is so different from the way they interact inside. They are best buds, the two who grew up together, the cat show team, the “kittens.”
They play chase games in the house, but it’s taken to a whole other level when they’re outside. They are pretty evenly matched: Zak is older and heavier, but Rory is faster and sneakier.
I know we don’t have a subway to ride, or a city to explore, but we can run around free outside…and that’s a fun option to have.
