Aby-a-Day – 14 April 2020: Emma’s Baby Yoda (Cartoon Tuesday)

The other day, Titti sent us an Easter drawing Emma made. Little creatures in Easter eggs: a lion, an elephant, and…

…Baby Yoda! This kid is going to grow up to be awesome!

Aby-a-Day – 10 April 2020: More PHOTOSHOPPED cats (Photoshop Friday)

Continuing last week’s Photoshop Friday, I did some more Photoshop challenges on the Facebook group This Cat is PHOTOSHOPPED. I also posted the meme about the green screen dress Queen Elizabeth wore when she gave her COVID-19 speech last Sunday.

3jakequeen

And, of course, I had to give Her Majesty a Three Jake Moon shirt.

mya-gollum

When I saw this photo of Mya the Sphynx, I had only one thought and one thought only. Isn’t she precious?

Jezebel-chewing-down-tree

Jezebel’s original photo had her on her scratching post. I thought she needed a real tree.

Chonky-Hindenburg_disaster

THIS is one of my favourites from this week. When I saw this chonky girl, my brain instantly went to…well, Manchester Township, New Jersey. One member said that it should be a poster. It’s always interesting to work in greyscale.

Yoda-cirque-trapeeze

Athletic Yoda reminded me of a trapeze artist.

How-To-Train-Your-Void

This face! I had to do this.

Chandler_Central_Perk

This cat’s name is Chandler, so I had to do this…

chandlercentralperk

I didn’t think that sofa looked “Central Perk” enough, so I used this one instead. Much better!

chandlercentralperksmelly

Then Björn made a comment…eh, it was inevitable.

harleypowderwhitealbumjpg

Harley and Powder’s human wanted them ‘Shopped onto a rock album. Hey, no problem.

MIAbear

I had saved this photo of the bear and was waiting for a cat to fill it. I thought it was Mia…but I wasn’t so sure after I finished it. But her human loved it, so that’s good enough for me.

peso_owl_flying

Peso is a semi-celebrity in the group – I mean, look at those eyes! Behold, the majestic Peso Owl in flight.

williejoust

Willie’s human wanted him Photoshopped riding something “bad ass”…well, what’s more bad ass than Joust? This was a lot of fun…I learned how to pixilate photos with this one. It’s always nice when one of these challenges teaches me a new trick.

willieputin

Then, someone in the comments posted a photo of Putin, shirtless, riding a horse, and said, “Someone please put him on the horse with Putin!” Challenge accepted.

gilliganabydos

Gilligan reminded me of an ancient Egyptian cat, so I put him in the temple at Abydos. Not super happy with how it turned out…but Gillgan’s human loved it. Again, that’s kind of the point.

ColGentlemanFlipped_Sitting_Behind_the_President's_Desk_in_the_Oval_Office

This is Colonel Gentleman. His original photo looked like he was sitting behind a desk, so… Fun fact: the base I used was a photo of Socks sitting behind Bill Clinton’s Resolute Desk.

3kittens-nightlights

Another person posted her adorable foster kittens Meeps, Sully and Toque….it was the obvious choice. I wish Toque’s photo had been larger, though.

jawscatposter

Another obvious choice. I had fun with the bubbles.

peadaniel

Daniel had to have his back leg shaved for an operation, and his owner wanted us to cover it up. I used a photo of a peacock I took at Borås Djurpark last summer, and used feather brushes to fill in spots.

baileytrump-empty-chairs

This is today’s project. Bailey’s human wanted him to turn his blep against evil. This was the most evil I could think of.

baileyjoeexotic<

Well, either that, or this. Potato, potahto.

Aby-a-Day – 27 Februari 2020: It finally snowed! Actual real snow! (Thursday Things)

As I may have mentioned before, we’ve been having a pretty crap winter with almost no snow

markissnowC01028

But on Tuesday, finally, it snowed all day Tuesday!

markissnowC01029

markissnowC01037

And on Wednesday morning, when I looked out the window, I saw the cutest thing.

markissnowC01042

Our upstairs neighbours’ girls were sledding down the small hill in our område, and Markis was just hanging out nearby, playing in the snow.

markissnowC01050

markissnowC01059

He really looked like he was happy we finally had snow, too.

markissnowC01066

He really seemed to be enjoying himself out there.

markissnowC01085

All the while keeping his eye on his smol hoomans.

dashsnowwindowC01069

Markis’ fun was not unnoticed by Dashiell, however.

dashsnowwindowC01074

Although I am not sure if he was wishing he was out there too…or if he was happy someone else was out there in the cold, wet snow.

markissnowC01099

Markis really seemed to be having a good time, though.

markissnowC01134

markissnowC01164

markissnowC01167

He just plowed back and forth out there in the snow. It was adorable.

Aby-a-Day – 21 Januari 2020: Castle Cats (Cartoon Tuesday)

So, on our way to see Frozen 2 downtown, I couldn’t help but notice a power box decorated with the very lovely Castle Cats.

I had no idea what they were or what they referred to, and come to find out that they’re part of a video game designed by PocApp Studios, based right here in Skövde!

How cool is that? I am not much of a gamer, but I may have to check out this game!

Aby-a-Day – 7 Juli: My first visit to a cat cafe…in Paris! (Special Sunday(

As I mentioned yesterday, whilst we were in London, we took a daytrip last Tuesday to Paris.

catcafeIzmirAthena_7782

Our first stop was Le Café Des Chats, my first ever cat café!

catcafeSimbaAthenaGavroche_7724

I know, I know…cat cafés are a thing…but this is the first one I’ve ever been to.

catcafeNames1_7769

catcafeNames2_7770

They had laminated cards with photos and backstories of every cat. Those came in wicked handy.

catcafeSimba_7771

One cat, Simba, decided it was his job to manage the front desk.

catcafeSimba_7767

Simba was up there, managing, most of the time we were there.

catcafeSimba_7766

It was so adorable, how seriously he took his self-appointed job.

catcafeZan_130950

Then there was Zan.

catcafeZan_7779

Zan spent almost the entire time we were there (from the café’s opening at noon) up on his shelf on the wall.

catcafeStairs_7780

The café has an ingenious system of steps, bridges, and old furniture mounted to the wall to create a “cat superhighway” (™ Jackson Galaxy). Seems like it’s working.

catcafeSalem_130703

The resident cats clearly knew that they were in charge. The only rules were “don’t feed the cats” and “don’t wake a sleeping cat.”

catcafeSalem_7778

This is Salem, owning his chair.

catcafeAlaska_120848

Here’s Alaska.

catcafeAlaska_7725

According to his bio, he was born in the street to a neglected housecat. Not sure why he’s called Alaska…but it suits him.

catcafebook_7775

The table we sat at had books that patrons could read. This book, “Secrets of the Cat,” was one of them.

catcafebookspread_7772

It had a two-page spread dedicated to the “indefatigable players” – notably, the Abyssinian and the Singapura.

catcafebookAby_7773

Abys’ playfulness needs no explanation…

catcafebookSinga_7774

…But the part about Singapuras is particularly adorable. It says, “The Singapura is an expert in clowneries.” Sounds about right.

catcafeFamousFelines_7723

The café also has this brilliant poster featuring famous felines.

catcafeFamousFelinesJake_7723

And it really is complete. Look at #62: It’s Zunar J-9/5 aka Jake the Cat From Outer Space!

catcafeOldprint_7730

Then there was this old print in the washroom. That “wild cat” looks a lot like an Aby, don’t you think?

catcafeIzmir_7732

But the best part about the café was this lovely lady.

catcafeIzmir_7731

Her name is Izmir.

catcafeIzmirCoco_122319

At first, she looks like a white longhair…but she isn’t. She’s a lilac Turkish Van; you can barely see it in photos, but her tail is lilac, not white. She also has one yellow eye and one blue one.

catcafeIzmirCoco_122342

catcafeIzmirCoco_122325

Izmir was a very polite cat. She came up to me and sat on the table, waiting for permission before engaging.

catcafeIzmirCoco_122317

Then, a gentle headbutt.

catcafeIzmirCoco_122434

Then she decided to crawl onto my lap.

catcafeIzmirCoco_122452

catcafeIzmir_7751

She has the longest whiskers I have ever seen on a cat.

catcafeIzmirCoco_122942

She settled down and made herself comfortable. The leather couch was rather slidey, so I was half sitting, half lying on it when Izmir settled. It was a bit awkward.

catcafeIzmirCoco_123039

But how could I move? She was so comfy.

catcafeIzmir_7741

And she was purring!

catcafeIzmir_7746

She stayed on my lap, purring and kneading, for the longest time. I didn’t really get to interact with many of the other cats…but after almost a week of not having any kitties to cuddle, she really made my day.

Aby-a-Day – 26 Februari: Fox finished…plus a little extra (Cartoon Tuesday)

Last week, Linus finished up my fox tattoo. I really love the way it turned out.

foxtatt_6289

Here is a close up, showing where the snake used to be.

coco-snaketatC06322

I am so glad to be rid of that snake! Even though I adore Barnaby, the artist who did it (and who did my Octopus, Koi and Tiger tattoos)…but it was a mistake.

my3catstattC05541

Whilst I was there, Linus also touched up the memorial tattoo of Gun-Hee and Logan (Logan’s eyes were made greener, and the background was touched up.

anklekitty

But best of all, he also touched up my very first tattoo, which I got on my first trip to New York City at the end of 1995. Naturally, being almost 25 years old (Day-uuuuuuummmmm!), poor Harri has faded quite a lot.

harri-retouchtatC05545

Now he looks like he did when I first got him! Thank you, Linus!

Aby-a-Day – 29 Januari: Lucky 7’s (Cartoon Tuesday)

A few weeks ago, Iris sent me an email about this year’s NEMO show. She wanted me to do a drawing of Marlin for the flyers and online show postings. Unlike previous years, we’re not having a barbecue, so a variation of Chef Marlin isn’t an option. Actually, it was kind of a relief; I’m not sure I could come up with yet another iteration on that theme. She wrote: It is our 7th show, so we are going with Lucky 7’s and dice and gambling and Las Vegas kinda stuff. This means we need some new art for the flyer (which we hope to have together by the end of this month).
So what do you think? Can you help us out? It wouldn’t be a NEMO show without Marlin!

So, as soon as I read that, I had an idea. Marlin playing craps.

Merlin_Craps-notable

I came up with an illustration that had three variations. Marlin with the dice and the entire craps table…Marlin with the dice and just the bumper…

Merlin_Craps-justdice

…and just Marlin and the dice. So depending on the need, there’s a graphic with Marlin for any occasion. And, if they want something other than Marlin, they’re always welcome to use my drawing of Lorelai as a Vegas showgirl!

Aby-a-Day – 20 Januari: Catching up with Tessie and Kylie

When I moved from Boston to Skövde, only Jacoby and Angel came with me. Kylie was always my ex’s cat, and Tessie, who was, in part, a 40th birthday present from my mom, helped raise Kylie and taught her how to cat. As much as I love Tessie, leaving her with Kylie was the best decision.

kylietess_5737

Clearly, you can see that was the right decision. They are bestest best friends.

tessie_5277

Tessie is now 15 (and almost a half) years old.

tessie_5597

To look at her, you would never guess she was that old!

tessieplushIMG_5143

I mean, here she is five years ago…she must have a little kitty portrait in her attic!

tessiebox_5389

She still loves boxes.

tessie_5706

And warm laundry.

tessienightlights_5641

I can’t believe she’s 15.

kylie13thbday_5042

Kylie turned 13 last April.

kylie_5659

She, like Tessie, does not look as old as she is, and is quite healthy.

kylieskyline_5620

She is still the only cat of ours who was born in Boston (well, Quincy). Tessie was born in Oregon, Angel in California, and Jacoby in New Brunswick. Only Kylie is a native New Englander.

kylieskyline_5637

(Not gonna lie…I do miss that view…)

kylie_5552

Kylie is still as pretty as ever, too.

kylietess-stalk

Right from the start, Kylie and Tessie were besties.

kylietess_5743

Thirteen years later, nothing has changed.

Aby-a-Day – 16 Januari: Wordless Wednesday (Oops, he did it again…)

chewedpacket_5982

Aby-a-Day – 15 January: Tattoo foxers (Cartoon Tuesday)

This is only tangentially related to Abys, or even cats, but I thought you might find it interesting.

snaketatt_5969

I had this snake tattoo…and I really didn’t like it. I got it for the wrong reasons, it hasn’t aged as well as most of the other ones I have, and it really doesn’t go with the other tattoos I have.

foxtatt_5975

So I finally decided to do something about it. I decided to get the snake covered up with a traditional Japanese fox design.

foxtatt_5976

Today was the first session. We got the outlines done, and then we coloured in the fox. I am not going to lie…this was the most painful tattoo I have ever gotten.

foxtatt_5979

Instead of a red fox, though, I wanted a North American grey fox. I have always loved the grey and orange colouration of these foxes.

freddybalconyC08993

Also, the colouration of the grey fox is quite similar to Alfred’s…I call him my grey fox.

foxtatt_5978

When I got home, I was drained and exhausted. I was lying on the sofa and Jacoby instantly came and lay on top of me…and on top of the tattoo. But it was nice, actually. Soothing. We’ll finish this tattoo up next month.

Aby-a-Day – 13 November: Cat Mob (Cartoon Tuesday)

Okay, not exactly a cartoon, but I see this sticker grafitti stuck to a wall-ashtray everytime I go to Commerce downtown. It’s just so happy! I mean, I know it’s grafitti…but it’s adorable.

CatMob-Mailbox

They also hit a postbox with a Sharpie, and this time Cat Mob has a friend. I really love his tail. I have no idea what or who Cat Mob is, but I appreciate their mascots.

Aby-a-Day – 28 August – Marlin meets Singulls (Cartoon Tuesday)

As I have posted, this past weekend was the NEMO CFA show back in Massachusetts. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend…but I judged the costume contest, sent a box of Swedish swag for the raffle, and did a new illustration of Marlin for the show catalogue cover.

I was thinking of the seagulls going after the grilling fish…and then I tried to eat something around Izaak.

marlinchef+dory

I also did a new one last year, showing Marlin with Dory, an Oriental Shorthair, which I haven’t shared with you yet, so here it is.

And, in case you are a new reader, here is the original NEMO logo I did and also
the cover illustration for our third show, which had a film and cinema theme.

Aby-a-Day – 14 August: Pining for the fjords (Cartoon Tuesday)

Whilst working on a new project for the upcoming NEMO show, I came across an old drawing I did for Iris five years ago for the National Norwegian Forest Cat Breed Club’s show catalogue (the show was around Columbus Day, as I recall). I’d forgotten all about it, but considering where I live now, it was too funny not to share.

wegieship-colour

Seeing it again also reminded me that I had always wanted to colour it. So, it being a rainy Tuesday, I figured, what the heck?

Aby-a-Day – 2 March: A long walk with a small Pyret (Friday Flashback)

Björn actually trained Pyret to walk on a leash when she was quite young. The above photo was taken when she almost a year old. She was actually well used to travelling when she was younger.

pyretwalkC09732 2

pyretwalkC09734 2

pyretwalkC09735 2

And even when she was older, she enjoyed a walk outside. Kalle and I took her out for a walk shortly after I moved here, just before her 17th birthday.

pyretwalkC09738 2

You can see how eager and excited she is!

pyretwalkC09746 2

Well, she was. She kinda had a “resting bitch face.”

pyretwalkC09767 2

pyretwalkC09768 2

pyretwalkC09770 2

She trotted across the grass with purpose.

pyretwalkC09774 2

pyretwalkC09788 2

Apparently, she wanted to visit her favourite tree.

pyretwalkC09817 2

pyretwalkC09828 2

When she was finished with that, she headed towards the tall grass.

pyretwalkC09805 2

pyretwalkC09833 2

We didn’t let her go too far into that, though.

pyretwalkC09834 2

pyretwalkC09837 2

pyretwalkC09840 2

pyretwalkC09847 2

pyretwalkC09848 2

So she and Kalle walked along the border between the mowed lawn and the tall grass.

pyretwalkC09856 2

She chewed some grass, and then she was done.

pyretwalkC09863 2

She led the way back to the apartment. Well, she had lived there for 10 years at that point, so of course she knew the way.

Aby-a-Day – 5 June: Travelling with a Singapura (Swedish Sunday)

When Björn was in Boston for our wedding in April, my friend Linda (who is also a member of NEMO) asked if we could help her out.

linda-leon-Seacoast16a

linda-leon-Seacoast16b

Linda, along with her husband Chuck, breed Singapuras (their cattery name is Mystiquecats), and she wanted to know if Björn would be willing to help two other Singapura breeders. Pat, of (Sopan Singapuras had a 10 month old girl kitty who needed to fly to live with a breeder in Sweden. And, as luck would have it, Björn was returning home and flying into Stockholm at just the right time!

nainaC06467

Well, naturally we jumped at the chance, not only to help out friends, but because just two months later, I would be making the exact same journey – on Icelandair – with Jacoby and Angel, and what better way to try out the flight accommodations with a cat than to actually take a cat on the flight?

nainaC06453

So, Björn and I met Pat and Naina, the girlcat, at Logan. I know Singapuras are small cats, and Naina was only 10 months old…but she was TINY!

nainaC06452

Pat had sent cats abroad before, and gave me excellent advice on how to outfit the carrier for a long trans-Atlantic flight. From her I learned that a bag of dry food should be attached to the outside of the crate, and the water bowl should be filled with water and frozen the night before, so the bowl would be filled with non-spillable, slowly thawing ice that the cats can lick if they are thirsty.

naina-pat-bjornC06468

After checking in, we got to go behind the scenes with an Icelandair employee. We went into a back room and a TSA employee checked Naina and her carrier to make sure that nothing was being smuggled in with the cat. Then they took her to the plane. On Icelandair, pets travel in a special pet hold rather than in the cabin. This is because Iceland is an island, and has very strict animal import laws and impose a quarantine on imported mammals. Animals need to be monitored by official airline personnel at all times and cannot be on the ground more than three hours. When I booked my flight to Sweden later this month, I had toyed with the idea of having a seven-hour layover in Reykjavik and actually go into the city, but since I’ll be travelling with the Abys, I can’t do that. So, I’ll have just enough time to go through customs, grab a snack, and get on my next plane.

naina-pat-bjornC06482

However, in our case, the cats having to travel in the pet hold is actually an advantage. Two animals of the same species, weighing less than 40 kg (88 lbs), can share one crate, so Jake and Angel will be able to travel together in one carrier rather than me having to manage two separate bags with cats in them along with my laptop and carry-on bag.

naina-pat-bjornC06476

Naina flew like a champ. When Björn landed in Stockholm and picked her up, she was as cheery and relaxed as she had been in Boston. He was impressed that after eleven hours flying and changing of planes, she was just meowing a little, but mostly was just curious about her new surroundings.

naina-arlanda 2

naina-arlanda

Björn met up with Lisa, of Melur Singapuras, at Arlanda and Naina was swiftly taken to her new home.

NainaHome1

NainaHome2

NainaHome3

As you can see from these photos Lisa posted on Facebook, Naina settled in almost immediately! She took to being in Sweden right away. Just like I hope that Jake and Angel will!
