Aby-a-Day – October 6: Christmas Déjà vu (Cartoon Tuesday)

Björn found another holiday cartoon I drew while clearing the basement storage for the imminent arrival of all my crap. This one was a quick sketch I drew, without pencil, for his then-girlfriend Titti back in 1997 when I was living in San Francisco with my two Siamese Harri and Patrick.

xmas-bjorn1997

A quick sketch like that? Of course I didn’t remember it after 18 years. But when he showed it to me on Sunday when he discovered it I was instantly struck with the similarity of this little scribble of Patrick and Harri to this cartoon I did in 2013 starring, of course, Jacoby and Angel:

abycartoon104

I mean, okay, the joke is different…but the basic dynamic is very similar. I’m also amused that Harri seems to have transitioned from being the “goofball” (aka Jake) character into being the “intelligent straight-man” (aka Angel) character with the introduction of Patrick, who was younger, rather than Sigrid, who – like Angel – was older than Harri. Or, the girlcat is always smarter…when there is no girlcat, the older cat is smarter.

Still…interesting to see an embryonic idea become a full-fledged cartoon years later…even if it was a complete accident!

Aby-a-Day – January 6: Or, What You Will (Cartoon Tuesday)

Today is Twelfth Night, the day my mother always told me was the day that all the holiday decorations were to be taken down.

abycartoon157

Of course, there is no better tree-taker-downer than an Abyssinian. Perhaps they’re a little too helpful?

Aby-a-Day – January 3: “Present” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Present.”

jakelasercollarC03373

One of Jacoby’s Christmas presents was a collar-mounted laser pointer from ThinkGeek.

jakelasercollarC03394

Jake loves lasers. If I make the “laser pointer sound” (mimicking the chattering he makes when he sees it), he will come running.

jakelasercollarC03398

In fact, he’s even figured out how to turn on the Dart laser toy by himself, so he can play with it whenever he wants (I just haven’t been able to get any photos of him doing it yet).

jakelasercollarC03404

jakelasercollarC03405

jakelasercollarC03408

It took him a little bit to get used to the idea that the red dot was kind of following him around.

jakelasercollarC03413

He needed to test it out a little before he really started playing with it.

jakelasercollarC03335

But once Jake got the idea…he was off! Watch him chasing the red dot!

Up and down the hallway! What fun! This is the best present ever!

jakelasercollarC03349

After he got tired of running, Jake and his laser pointer took on the ultimate challenge…

jakelasercollarC03351

…The Christmas lights!

jakelasercollarC03352

Keep your eye on that red dot, Jake!

jakelasercollarC03353

Good luck!

Aby-a-Day – January 2: Prêt à Porter de Paris (Fashion Friday)

Jacoby and I did a little holiday gift swap with our Facebook friend Juliette Mok.

jakexmassweaterC03217

Juliette made an admiring comment on Jake’s bomber jacket, and wanted to get one for her Aby, Lamé.

jakexmassweaterC03221

Juliette and Lamé live in Paris, so she couldn’t just order the bomber jacket from Petco. So I offered to buy it and mail it to her.

jakexmassweaterC03222

In exchange, she offered to send me something from ZooPlus, a French pet store.

jakexmassweaterC03209

We picked the Norwegian Sweater. To go with it, Jake also got this Scandinavian-style scarf.

jakexmassweaterC03230

The scarf is a little wide for Jake’s neck, I think…but the sweater is magnificent. Feline fashion direct from Paris!

jakexmassweaterC03225

I think Jake likes it, too…thank you, Juliette and Lamé!

And here is Lamé, in his new bomber jacket! Isn’t he dashing?

I also sent a bomber jacket to my friend Sanna-Leena in Finland for her fawn Aby, Sketsi.

Even though Sketsi lives in Helsinki, this was his first experience with snow. He also wore the knitted hat I sent him last winter. Maybe next time, I’ll need to send him some boots like Jake has, too.

Abyssinians are fashionable all over the world!

Aby-a-Day – December 30: Nipped Nog (Cartoon Tuesday)

Disclaimer: Do not give cats alcohol.

abycartoon156

Of course, there is no alcohol in this eggnog. It’s all catnip.

Aby-a-Day – December 27: “Smooth” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Smooth.”

jaketinytieC03280

Jacoby got a new Tiny’s Tie from Sherry for Christmas.

jaketinytieC03292

As you can see, it’s a Boston’s Bruins Tiny Tie.

jaketinytieC03305

And, as you can also see, Jake’s looking pretty smooth wearing it.

jaketinytieC03284

Cue the dramatic lighting!

jaketinytieC03283

Whoa! Where the heck did that come from?!

Aby-a-Day – December 26: Gun-Hee’s first Christmas (Friday Flashback)

I know I post this nearly every year, but I love these photos so much I have to share them again.

gunhee-tree794

Pretend Gun-Hee is Rudolf…a holiday tradition!

gunhee-tree795

We got Gun-Hee on December 15, 2006, so I always called him my Christmas kitten.

gunhee-tree796

This was Christmas night, after all the presents were opened, and my future husband and I were in the kitchen cleaning up after dinner when we heard a sound from the front room of my old apartment.

gunhee-tree797

And there he was, Gun-Hee. Up the tree.

gunhee-tree798

We extricated him from the faux branches and put him back down on the floor, but as soon as we let him go he scrambled right back up into the tree like he had magnets in his feet.

gunhee-tree799

This went on for a while. I was afraid he was going to break the tree – the wiring between sections was already kind of iffy.

gunhee-tree800

As it turned out, this old tree only had one more year left in it. Had we known that then, we probably would have let Gun-Hee play in the tree more.

gunhee-tree809

When he was up in the tree he just looked so serious.

gunhee-tree814

It was like climbing the tree was his job, and he was a very diligent worker.

gunhee-tree818

He was such a little kitten compared to Jacoby. It’s probably a good thing that we got Jake in the summer, and by Christmas he was 8 months old and too big to really consider climbing the tree. Jake just played underneath it. A lot.

gunhee-tree820

Yes, Gun-Hee is looking at the curtain rod to see if he can get any higher.

Aby-a-Day – December 25: Behind the scenes with Santa

Here’s some photos of yesterday’s photo being taken:

jakexmasoutingE_2093

jakexmasoutingE_2094

I was a little bit amused that the photos were just taken with a little digital camera. Ah, progress.

jakexmasoutingE_2096

jakexmasoutingE_2097

jakexmasoutingE_2098

I really liked the manager’s commitment to the Santa outfit. I mean, really, he only needed to wear the top half of the suit, right?

Merry Christmas to all our readers!

Since I don’t have everyone’s address, here is your holiday card!

Merry Christmas, one and all, and thank you for following our adventures!

Aby-a-Day – December 24: Wordless Wednesday (Unwrap joy)

Aby-a-Day – December 23: Don’t look directly into the light (Cartoon Tuesday)

I thought of this before I actually found Jacoby an ugly Christmas sweater…

abycartoon155

…so I had to come up with the ugliest sweater ever in the history of ugly Christmas sweaters. Which this has to be, because I did a Google image search “ugliest Christmas sweater ever” and combined several of the best worst ones I found. And then enhanced them. So this is truly an ugly Christmas sweater. If I could make it an animated blinking gif, I would have.

abycartoon155sketch

And here’s the original iPad sketch, just for fun. There are some things that Photoshop does really well…and evidently uglifying Christmas sweaters is one of them. I couldn’t make the sketched sweater nearly as ugly as I wanted.

(Click cartoon to embiggen (if you really want to see that sweater any larger than this), or you can view all cartoons in Slideshow mode on Flickr.)

Aby-a-Day – December 21: A visit to St. Nicholas

Last week, Jacoby went to see Santa at Petco.

jakexmasstoller5

This is something I’ve wanted to do with him forever. I used to take my Siamese, Harri and Sigrid, to see Santa back in San Francisco.

harrisigridXmas95_0149

harrisigridXmas96_0149

So when I learned Petco was doing photos with Santa I leapt at the chance.

jakexmasstoller2

Luckily, it was a nice warm day, in the 40’s. I bundled Jake up well, but really, it wasn’t that cold at all.

jakexmasoutingE_2072

It’s been a while since we went anywhere in Jake’s stroller. I think he was happy to go out somewhere.

jakexmasoutingE_2069

We actually went to an Unleashed by Petco store. This one just opened on Washington Street in the South End back in July, and it’s so close to where we live! It was less than a mile’s walk, closer than the Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Center. We’ll definitely have to come back more often.

jakexmasoutingE_2074

The staff is awesome. And they were thrilled to see a cat come to shop.

jakexmasoutingE_2087

The manager, Jim, was playing Santa. He left his post to come meet Jake.

jakexmasoutingE_2085

jakexmasoutingE_2083

Now, that’s special treatment, when Santa comes to see you.

jakexmasoutingE_2079

jakexmasoutingE_2078

I’m not sure who enjoyed the petting more, Jake or Santa!

Aby-a-Day – December 19: In Soviet Christmas, cats deck you (Fashion Friday)

Last week I decked Jacoby out in his holiday finest. But then, we went to Petco to see Santa Claus, and a funny thing happened…

jakexmasfashionC03021

Yeah, we kind of found more holiday gear for his wardrobe.

jakexmasfashionC03027

Like this Elf costume complete with jingle bell “shoes.”

jakexmasfashionC03023

Green is definitely Jake’s colour.

jakexmasfashionC03085

And then we found…

jakexmasfashionC03095

…Reindeer antlers!

jakexmasfashionC03102

And they’re not just reindeer antlers. They’re red and green plaid reindeer antlers!

jakexmasfashionC03074

Yeah, it just doesn’t get much better than red and green plaid reindeer antlers.

jakexmasfashionC03121

Except…remember last week I mentioned I wanted to get Jake a fugly Xmas sweater…but I couldn’t find one? Well, guess what they had at Petco?

jakexmasfashionC03186

Unattractive holiday sweaters!

jakexmasfashionC03167

Yep…Admittedly, it’s more Neo-Fug rather than the Classic Fugly Sweater from the late 60’s to mid 80’s…but it’s definitely on the right track, don’t you think?

jakexmasfashionC03188

And you know what makes the sweater even better?

jakexmasfashionC03193

A red and green plaid holiday trapper hat!

jakexmasfashionC03194

Oh, yeah. Now Jake’s ready for Christmas! Bring it on.

Aby-a-Day – December 16: Stocking Stuffer (Cartoon Tuesday)

This is just a little something I came up with while riding the Commuter Rail out to Natick.

abycartoon154

I don’t think Jacoby actually fits inside his stocking, but if he could…

abycartoon154sketch

And here’s the original iPad sketch, just for fun.

Also, I really want to thank CoyoteMange for an awesome set of Photoshop fur and feather brushes they made available for free download on DeviantArt! This is the first time I tried them and I really like the effect. I think these are going to be a major influence on my cartooning in the future.

(Click cartoon to embiggen, or you can view all cartoons in Slideshow mode on Flickr.)

Aby-a-Day – December 15: Jake and the flake (Hipstamatic Monday)

While I was taking snapshots of Jacoby in his mistletoe hat last week, I picked up a snowflake light that had fallen off the string.

hipstajakexmas21

hipstajakexmas22

Of course, Jake was instantly intrigued.

hipstajakexmas25

He demanded (as only an Aby can) to see what I had in my hand.

hipstajakexmas26

hipstajakexmas27

“What is this shiny device? I must have it!”

hipstajakexmas28

Gimme dat!

hipstajakexmas29

Nom nom nom!

hipstajakexmas30

hipstajakexmas31

It’s really amazing just how strong those Aby grabby hands can be when they really want something.

hipstajakexmas32

hipstajakexmas33

Usually only really good food (ie, MY food) gets this kind of a reaction!

hipstajakexmas34

I’m not sure if it was the interesting shape, or the way it caught the light. Jake was really biting that snowflake!

hipstajakexmas35

“Mine! All mine! I licked it, so there!” Yeah, things got a bit frenzied.

hipstajakexmas36

He was really into that flake! As it turned out, we’re still missing one snowflake bulb, so the string won’t light up. I’m thinking that may not be a bad thing…could you imagine Jake trying to bite the snowflakes if they were lit?

Abys are Everywhere – Cute Overload’s Free Holiday Wallpaper

Thanks to Abyfriend Martin for this find!

Cute Overload has free holiday wallpaper for you to download, and it features an Aby kitten!

Aby-a-Day – December 8: Nest of Stockings (Hipstamatic Monday)

The other day while I was untangling Christmas lights, I had all the stockings in a pile on the floor waiting to be hung up.

hipstajakexmas1

Jacoby decided that would make a nifty nest.

hipstajakexmas2

hipstajakexmas3

He carefully tramped the down to make them just the right amount of comfy.

hipstajakexmas4

hipstajakexmas5

It was kind of interesting that he especially selected his own stocking to cuddle with.

hipstajakexmas6

I wonder if he knew it was his…or it just happened to be the most on top?

hipstajakexmas7

Of course, you can’t be Jake and get all cute on a pile of stockings, and expect me not to find the infamous Mistletoe Hat.

hipstajakexmas8

Of course, Jake instantly began striking poses.

hipstajakexmas20

Thoughtful…

hipstajakexmas10

…cute…

hipstajakexmas9

…dreamy…

hipstajakexmas11

…serious…

hipstajakexmas12

…dramatic…

hipstajakexmas13

…befuddled…

hipstajakexmas17

…and alert.

hipstajakexmas14

Jake is such a ham. He loves when I have my camera handy.

hipstajakexmas19

“Here’s my good side.”

hipstajakexmas18

“Here’s my other good side.”

hipstajakexmas15

Hmmm…maybe I need one of those 3D scanners to capture his true magnificence.

Is it an Aby? Somali edition: Holiday money card

You know me, I’m always on the lookout for greeting cards with Abyssinians – or Somalis – on them.

I found this one last week at Target. I think it’s a Somali…but what do you think? The colour on the cat is pretty desaturated, so that makes it harder to tell…

Aby-a-Day – November 29: “Candle” (Saturday Photo Hunt)

This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Candle.”

angelcandleIMG_1991

Because we have two Abyssinians in the house, we don’t have real candles. At Christmastime, we use battery-operated fake candles.

angelcandleIMG_1994

Some of these candles are pretty nice. This one is covered with real wax and actually smells a little bit like a bayberry candle. Okay, so they’re not as nice and warm as real candles, but they do have one distinct advantage.

angelcandleIMG_1989

When they fall over, nothing catches on fire and there isn’t any hot melted wax to deal with.
