Aby-a-Day – 11 November: On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month…(Serious Sunday)

Today is the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, the end of the Great War To End All Wars. As I recalled a few years ago, this holiday is observed somewhat differently in Canada than it is in the United States.

Apparently, the 100th anniversary observance of this occasion is handled VERY differently by Canada and the US, as evidenced by the two countries’ respective leaders. I’ve never been prouder to hold Canadian citizenship.

  1. My dad was a WW2 Coast Guard vet and often expressed memories of how poorly he and others from the South Pacific area were handled on coming back home – roughly shuffled on to trains in the cold in California with no proper clothing for the weather. My high school classmates went to Vietnam immediately after graduation and their treatment on coming home was sad and disrespectful. Those that did come home.

And I won’t even get in to how we in the US were represented this weekend on the world stage. Except to say, “Sheesh!”

If you know a vet or even chance to meet a stranger who is a vet or on active duty, thank them for their service ANY day of the year. And thank their spouse, too, as it takes a special person to “hold down the fort at home” while their loved one is away.
