I honestly don’t know how this can possibly be a comfortable way to sleep. And yet, Lorelai sleeps like this a lot.
She also sleeps with her eyes a little bit open sometimes. That’s just creepy.
When we went outside the other day, one place Lorelai had to visit was her beloved sandbox.
She loves to roll around in the sand so much.
It’s different, looking at still shots vs watching her roll around live.
She looks a lot more goofy in the still shots.
She tries to become one with the sand. It’s so much fun to watch.
Rory carefully examines her next rolling spot in the sand.
And then she just…goes for it, Relationship goals: find yourself someone who looks at you like Rory looks at the sand.
My friend (and Dashiell’s breeder) sent us some Christmas gifts. Among them was a simple wand toy with holographic tinsel.
I put it in a pencil cup. Lorelai really liked it.
Errr…maybe she liked it a little too much. But she’s proof that wand toys don’t need to have a human on the other end to be fun to play with.
As for the question on everyone’s mind…I still can’t tell if Rory is pregnant. Her nipples seem to say yes, but he isn’t showing anything yet. I am going to weigh her this weekend, so maybe that will give us a clue.
When the cats go outside, one thing they love to do is take a dust bath.
Look at Alfred luxuriating in the warm dust at the base of this tree.
Lorelai found a different tree…but the same lovely warm dust.
And finally….here we have Izaak, also rolling in the wonderful warm dust. They are so much fun to watch outside.
As I posted last Sunday, Izaak and Angel’s cat tree battle has become an afternoon ritual.
Angel goes to hang out and chill on the top of the cat tree, Zak tries to unseat her, and she defends herself.
And she is 100% capable of defending herself. I mean, look at that hiss! She may have only two teeth, but this girl is FIERCE!
Angel has no problems keeping Zak in his place.
Zak attempts to take over the top again…
…but look at Angel’s cocked arm. She’s more than ready for him.
Zak makes one last half-hearted feint at Angel…
…and nearly falls out of the hole in the bottom of the house.
…and…Zak out.
It’s become something of an afternoon ritual.
Izaak and Angel have a cat tree battle.
Angel occupies the top spot, and Zak occupies the house.
And then Zak attempts to storm the castle and take over the top.
He has some…interesting moves…
He’s very stealthy…
Okay, that’s just plain…what is that, even? What is that meant to accomplish?
May as well settle in, Zak. You’re not going to knock Angel off her perch.
I am kind of loving how the language of the internet is evolving. From L33t speak in the 1990’s to LOL cat speak, it’s really been a lot of fun to watch develop.
And now we have the newest internet dialect: DoggoLingo. Just as LOL cat speak was applied to dogs, DoggoLingo is being co-opted by kitties. It’s a world of heckin good bois, chonks, bleps and peets, and, of course, smol bols
Lorelai and Dashiell, especially, love to sleep curled up into the smallest balls they can. Rory making herself a tiny ball isn’t that hard; she’s a small cat, weighing only 2.6kg (just under 6lbs).
But Dash, who is almost as big as Alfred (who is 4.6kg, just over 10lbs), can make himself into a pretty smol bol.
I don’t know what he does with those gangly legs of his…but it’s impressive.
Freddy and Izaak tend to do a double bol. I am not sure if Freddy has much say in the matter.
Then we have the pretty poses. They have nothing to do with the language stuff above.
They’re just pretty.
Zak manages to make some pretty poses himself.
For about five seconds. Then he goes and ruins it. Way to go, Zak.
Yeah? Well…what you think is a moo point. You know, like a cow’s opinion. It doesn’t matter. It’s moo.
Lorelai is elegant, lithe, and graceful…When’s she’s awake.
Sleeping? Not so much.
And she’s always been that way, actually. The first two photos were taken this week.
But the rest of the photos in this post were taken last July, when Rory had only been living with us a couple of months.
She really folds herself into some interesting positions.
But she seems to sleep deeply, despite her contortions.
Of course, she doesn’t always sleep alone.
Today is also Izaak’s Gotcha Day…last year, on 20 June, I went to Stockholm to collect him. So, sometimes Rory has to share her sleeping quarters with her little big brother.
While he is not quite as…stretchy and bendy…Rory is, he can sleep in some pretty odd positions, too.
Jacoby was such a great poser. He just seemed to understand what I wanted, and I could set him some place and he would sit there perfectly. I never trained him to do that, he just knew that the camera meant that he should hold still.
When I saw the cat on the carousel in Boston Common, I knew I had to get a shot of Jake riding it. In between rides, they let me put him on the cat and were quite impressed with how cooperative he was.
He struck this pose when he was only six months old.
I used it to make this.
He posed wonderfully without even trying.
This photo became the iconic #strollercat T-shirt.
He could be very dramatic at times…
…very dramatic!
He was so wonderfully patient when I asked him to pose in his clothing.
Jake loved riding the T.
When it came to agility…Jake was a little too good at posing!
Some of the best photos of him were in snow. The first one, with the hat, was published in Boston magazine.
The current lot are photogenic, and Alfred in particular can throw some awesome poses… but they don’t have that understanding that Jake had. What were a team. We did so much together. I wonder if I’ll ever have that again with another cat.
It’s not impossible…I said the same thing after Harri died, the last cat I had that kind of bond with. I just don’t know what the magic formula is for finding a cat like that.
Jake was just so…bulletproof. I could set him anywhere and back away to take a photo, and I knew he wouldn’t jump down. We trusted each other implicitly.
I love our current LunaTicks dearly, of course. Angel is not really bonded to anyone (she cuddles on her own terms) and Freddy is bonded to everyone. The kittens are also bonded to everyone, Izaak slightly more to me and Lorelai slightly more to Björn. But as much as we love them and they us…none of them have that connection, that spark, that undefinable something that elevates them to another level of human-cat interaction.
On the simplest level, no other of our cats head bonk me. With Jake, I would put my head down and we would bonk our skulls together like a cranial fist bump. We did it fairly hard, too. When I try to do that with the others, they either back up, or sniff me, or rub their sides against my head…well, Freddy will sometimes pat me on the head. But no bonks.
I hope I can find another Aby to bonk heads with some day.
Almost every evening, Alfred comes for a cuddle with Björn.
Freddy sits right up next to Björn whilst he uses his laptop.
The thing is, he looks a right goon when he does it.
Of course, Freddy looks like a right goon most of the time. That’s just part of his charm.
Ultimately, he’s just a big lovable guy.
We love him so much.
This is the fourth installment of posts about Alfred’s family. I was lucky enough to get to meet both of his parents, all of his littermates, and some other relations as well. Today we meet Alfred’s father and his cousins. Last week’s post is here.
Freddy’s father is an absolutely stunning ruddy named SE*Maghreb’s Snusmumriken. Of course, his father’s awesome ruddiness is also part of the reason why Freddy is so dark for a black silver Aby.
He is also a poser, like Jacoby. He knows how handsome he is!
Snus is also super friendly, which has definitely rubbed off on our Freddy.
He’s also brilliant with kittens. Which is lovely; not all tomcats are.
Especially when the kittens aren’t theirs! These cute sorrel babies are actually Snus’ sister’s kits.
It reminded me a bit of watching lion cubs play with the big male lion.
Those cousins were pretty adorable, too. Either playing alone…
(Hey! Be careful!)
…or together.
The cousins were also supremely adept at posing, just like their father.
…Well. Mostly.
But it was so much fun and such a special opportunity to meet so many members of Freddy’s family! Not often you get the chance to do that.
Because Björn is in Sweden, and I’m in the States, we spend a lot of time communicating online via FaceTime.
Sometimes, this can lead to some amusing photos. Now, these aren’t exactly “selfies,” I know, but…
…Abys + FaceTime can lead to some pretty hilarious photos!
This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Elegant.”
Abyssinians are widely considered to be one of the most elegant breeds of cat.
No, really.
I’m serious!
No, I really AM serious.
Look, you can even Google it.
I can hear you laughing, you know.
I can still hear you.
Oh, now you’re just hurting his feelings.
Whoops…almost rolled right off the bed there…
Yeah, all right.
So maybe I don’t have the best example…
Because “Jacoby with a Finnish cat toy on his head” didn’t have nearly the same ring…
Ha ha, get it? RING? Because it’s one of the crocheted rings that Sanna sent us…oh, all right.
I put it on Jake’s head because I could, and because it was made of metallic gold thread, it looks like a little crown. Sort of.
Heavy is the head that wears the gold crocheted cat ring toy?
This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Mystical.”
Throughout history, cats have been associated with mystical powers.
You see that all the time: Cats are mystical, mysterious, magical.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah they are.
They totally are. They’re absolutely other-worldly.
I was in our local grocery store the other day and I happened upon a Lindt Gold Bunny gift set.
Well, once I saw those ears, I knew I had to buy it.
And you know what I had in store for those ears, too.
Well, seriously. Brown bunny ears? I’m surprised more Aby people didn’t snap these up!
We had a little trouble getting the ears to stay on properly at first, being that they headband wasn’t sized for a cat’s head.
But Jacoby’s a pro at wearing things on his head, so eventually we got it to work.
Oh, yeah, Jake got the ears to work, all right.
Work it, Jake.
My husband commented that he though the ears were more Angel’s colour than Jake’s.
All right, let’s find out.
So…who wore it better?
This week’s Photo Hunt subject is “Fan.”
My husband is a Green Bay Packers fan.
Since Jacoby is the only boy in the house, and the only other person in the house who will watch football on a regular basis, he is also a Green Bay Packers fan.
You may remember when the Packers won the Super Bowl, and Jake dressed up in a Green Bay jersey and helmet.
Now he also has an official Cheesehead to wear.
Not that it did a lot of good last Sunday.
In case you didn’t hear, it will be Seattle and not Green Bay who will play the New England Patriots next week on Superbowl Sunday.
I would explain why Jacoby is not a New England fan (when he is all about everything else Boston)…but it’s a very long story. Let’s just say it’s because of his dad and leave it at that.
Hey, at least there’s always Kitten Bowl II and the Kitty Halftime Show to look forward to!
