Aby-a-Day – 6 October: Izaak and Lorelai at the show in Vårgårda (Cat Show Saturday)

Quick show report from Vårgårda today.

bjornrorycheckin_4753

Because of the funeral yesteday, we decided to cancel our motel reservation and just stay at home Friday and Saturday night. This meant a long, speedy, frenzied drive to the show hall this morning…only to face a long, slow line at check in. Of course.

zakroryshownap_4754

Of course, once we got the cage set up, Lorelai and Izaak were their usual, over-stressed selves.

zakrorybeefhearts_4757

Although we did have a bit of excitement over the dried beefheart samples…

bonk_4761

We were benched next to our friends Anna, Peter and Bonk. That was pleasant.

roryshalfsister_4762

The big surprise was that Rory’s half-sister was entered in the show! They have the same mother, Kajza, but Adela was born in January 2017.

roryshalfsister_4782

Here is Rory’s half-sister Adela up for judging.

roryjudging02

Rory was up for judging first, before Zak.

roryjudging01

The judge, Ulrika Eriksson, liked her well enough to call her back for the nominations.

rorysfinal_4785

She was up against this tabby-point and white Siamese…

rorysfinal-siamese_4796

…who ultimately ended up getting the nomination.

zakjudging_4811

Then it was Izaak’s turn.

zakjudging_4812

He was the only cat Jaana Jyrkinen judged today in his class (11 – Juniors, 7-10 months), so he got the nomination by default…but she loved him and would have had him in her final decision regardless.

zaknom_4820

Here’s Zak with his little Nom trophy.

zaknom_4817

…No, Zak…nothing to eat here…

zaknom_4823

We were so excited! This was Zak’s first nomination! Okay, it may have been by default…but still, it’s a nomination and it counts!

zaknom_4830

In the panel, Zak was up against a Bengal and a blue-spotted Ocicat.

zaknom_4833

It was close…but the Ocicat ended up being Best in Show today. But still, it was a good day for the only Singapura entered in the show!

Uncle Clancy hunts with StarClan

Okay, 2018. Seriously. We need to talk. This death thing? You really need to knock it off with the cats I know and love. Because…and I cannot fathom that this has happened again, and only a month since the last one…Jacoby’s Uncle Clancy joined StarClan today.

Clancy was Jake’s uncle. Clancy and Scar had the same parents, but were born to different litters. Clancy is most likely the red kitten in the back on the left in this photo.

Clancy loved to wear coats in winter and costumes at Halloween. This is him in a hot dog costume with Finnegan in a flame cape.

abycartoon119

Clancy and Seamus even starred in one of my cartoons.

I have gotten the best holiday cards with Clancy and Santa.

This was his birthday present, four years ago. He obviously loved his new cat tree. He was only thirteen. My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend has stopped running today. Sleep well in Tuonela, dear Uncle Clancy.

Aby-a-Day – 5 October: Jacoby and Bodil (Friday Flashback)

These are the words of Björn, Koshka’s husband.

jakebjornsmammaC07271

Today we held the funeral service for my mother. She was an artist and one who had cats as a kid and then later in life, when a couple of strays moved in, a few years between them.

jakebjornsmammaC07273

jakebjornsmammaC07276

Otto was a tomcat who was an opportunist, but Oskar won her and my dad’s hearts. A mean neighbor across the road had him caught and euthanized, something that grieved her for years afterwards. Mom got along really well with my old cat, Pyret, and when Koshka moved to Sweden, she got the opportunity to meet Jacoby and Angel.

jakebjornsmammaC07299

jakebjornsmammaC07307

She met them while visiting our home, and Jake being a social kitty liked the attention (and the chance of getting a snack or two). This was at a joint birthday party for my son Kalle and me, last March (2017).

jakebjornsmum-disneyjul_7306

We brought Jake for Christmas at my mother’s house in 2016 and 2017.

jakebjornsmum-kaviarjul_7373

He enjoyed the change of scenery, and the opportunity to sample some Swedish Christmas food. Jake seemed to enjoy Swedish kaviar (creamy salty fish egg paste).

jakebjornsmom-jul

jakebjornsmom-jul2

Mom slipped him a few tidbits, which made her a great two-legged being in his eyes. That last Christmas the first symptoms of Mom’s illness appeared, but we didn’t know that she would be gone less than nine months later. She was too sick to come visit us and see Lorelai and Izaak. We are sure she would’ve loved the young kitties, too. Our cats have lost a friend.

Other People’s Singas: Noodle the paddle boarder, Paolo the Brave and his brother, Keiko

This really awesome video of a Singapura paddle boarding with her human in the UK popped up on Facebook yesterday. Noodle and her human, Nigel, go paddle boarding regularly on rivers in Essex and Sussex. They even have an Instagram page.

But as cool as this story is, it gets cooler. Noodle (Singaneko Artemis) comes from a British cattery, and her father is Bakardi Minimali*PL (“Keiko”). Kinsey, the breeder, has also written two children’s books about Keiko and his littermate brother Paolo (Bolt Minimali*PL). I discovered – and bought – these books last year after we got Logan, delighted to find any books starring Singas.

zakmousieC00604

Of course, you know that our Izaak also comes from Minimali*PL. But if you look at Paolo’s, Keiko’s and Zak’s pedigrees, you’ll find that all three boys’ parents are Tinytoy Rus Mafoj*PL (father) and Angelina Minimali*PL (mother)…so Zak is Paolo and Keiko’s full brother, and Noodle is his neice! Paolo and Keiko are three years older than Zak…but how amazing is it to discover that Zak’s brothers are children’s book stars!? And his neice is a famous paddle boarder!? I guess Zak has a lot to live up to.

Aby-a-Day – 8 July: “Judge not, lest ye be judged” (Cat Show Cinema Sunday)

Last Saturday, as I posted, Lorelai made her first show appearance.

halfbroVäkC07530

What was interesting, though, was that her half brother Lord was being judged at the same time on the judging table next to ours. The ruddies and the blues were judged separately on Saturday, and together on Sunday.

halfbroVäkC07535

halfbroVäkC07539

It was fun to watch him be judged while Rory was being judged.

roryVäkjudgingC07557

roryVäkjudgingC07564

Rory is a cat show natural! She was fearless, playful, and utterly charming.

roryVäkjudgingC07566

The judge, Marie Westerlund, actually breeds Abys (her cattery name is S*Rackarkattens) and she fell in love with Rory.

In FIFe, the owner displays the cat to the judge, and the judge talks to the owner and explains what she’s looking for and how the cat meets the standard. It’s a bit different from CFA, where of course the judges know who the owners are, but there’s a sort of invisible wall of tacit anonymity. A show judge is not supposed to see or even know what cat is entered in the show. After the cat is judged, it’s okay to hang out with the judge. Also, in CFA, judges dress up. Men wear ties, and women wear nice suits and dresses. In FIFe, the judges seem to wear whatever they want. Men wearing jeans and a polo shirt is not uncommon.

Marie seemed to examine Rory for ages

halfbroVäkC07617

Meanwhile, Rory’s half-brother was still on his judging table.

roryhalfbroVäkC07632

roryhalfbroVäkC07651

roryhalfbroVäkC07654

Then something odd happened. Rory’s judge went over to talk to Lord’s judge! I hadn’t ever seen that happen before. Not sure what they were talking about, but it was cool to see them close together!

roryVäkjudgingC07683

roryjudgingC07685

As you can see, Rory is a natural star. And you can see how smitten Marie was by her.

I also shot a movie of her being judged. As I said, she was on the table a really long time!

Other People’s Singas: Izaak’s brother Joop the victorious (Super Singas)

While we were with Lorelai at her first show in Sweden, Izaak’s brother Joop was at the Wystawa Kotów Rasowych in Sopot, Poland.

I’m not sure exactly how the awards translate, but he did very well indeed, and I think this was his very first show, too. You can see him in action on the judging table

here.

Unlike CFA, when you win a Best in Show you get not only a rosette but also prizes – usually food and cat accessories.

Here is Joop and all his winnings. That trophy is bigger than he is!

And if you are wondering why we didn’t take Zak along with Rory to the show this past weekend, well, that’s because while he is registered in FIFe, he is registered as a Polish cat, not a Swedish cat. He needs to have his details entered into Sverak‘s database as my cat before I can enter him. So as soon as that happens…we’ll see if he can do as well as his littermate!

Aby-a-Day – 30 June: “A lady never gets her own eggroll. A lady never gets her own anything!” (Cat Show Saturday)

Today was Lorelai’s very first cat show in Forshaga, just north of Karlstad, in Värmlands Län.

abyentriesVäkIMG_E3846

When we got to the benching area and looked at the catalogue, we got two surprises…One, there was a little ruddy girl who was born the exact same day as Rory!

samedayVäkIMG_3838

Her full name is SE*Cat Claw’s Master-Class (I don’t know what her nickname is), and apart from the fact that she looks more like Jacoby, the rest of her was just like Rory.

samedayVäkIMG_3839

She really wanted me to open the cage door and play with her.

samedayVäkIMG_3841

“Oooh, shiny!”

halfbroVäkIMG_3837

But the other surprise was even bigger: Rory has a half brother! SE*Cat Claw’s Lord of Light’s father is the same as Rory’s: Norwegian-born Tejas Glenn! Her brother is a handsome fellow, isn’t he? He reminds me a bit of Alfred.

roryVäkjudgingIMG_3851

So how did Rory do? Well, turns out our judge, Marie Westerlund, bred Abys, and she absolutely fell in love with our girl.

roryVäkjudgingIMG_3850

And Rory played on the table like a champ.

roryVäknomIMG_3852

End result? She was nominated to the final panel! She didn’t get Best Kat. 4 Kitten in Show, though; a Russian Blue who is on track to be FIFe’s best kitten won the day. But, watching the judges, it looked close decision on the judges’ part, and it’s a very promising start. Let’s see how she does tomorrow.
