Aby-a-Day – 8 July: “Judge not, lest ye be judged” (Cat Show Cinema Sunday)

Last Saturday, as I posted, Lorelai made her first show appearance.

What was interesting, though, was that her half brother Lord was being judged at the same time on the judging table next to ours. The ruddies and the blues were judged separately on Saturday, and together on Sunday.

It was fun to watch him be judged while Rory was being judged.

Rory is a cat show natural! She was fearless, playful, and utterly charming.

roryVäkjudgingC07566

The judge, Marie Westerlund, actually breeds Abys (her cattery name is S*Rackarkattens) and she fell in love with Rory.

In FIFe, the owner displays the cat to the judge, and the judge talks to the owner and explains what she’s looking for and how the cat meets the standard. It’s a bit different from CFA, where of course the judges know who the owners are, but there’s a sort of invisible wall of tacit anonymity. A show judge is not supposed to see or even know what cat is entered in the show. After the cat is judged, it’s okay to hang out with the judge. Also, in CFA, judges dress up. Men wear ties, and women wear nice suits and dresses. In FIFe, the judges seem to wear whatever they want. Men wearing jeans and a polo shirt is not uncommon.

Marie seemed to examine Rory for ages

Meanwhile, Rory’s half-brother was still on his judging table.

Then something odd happened. Rory’s judge went over to talk to Lord’s judge! I hadn’t ever seen that happen before. Not sure what they were talking about, but it was cool to see them close together!

As you can see, Rory is a natural star. And you can see how smitten Marie was by her.

I also shot a movie of her being judged. As I said, she was on the table a really long time!

Other People’s Singas: Izaak’s brother Joop the victorious (Super Singas)

While we were with Lorelai at her first show in Sweden, Izaak’s brother Joop was at the Wystawa Kotów Rasowych in Sopot, Poland.

I’m not sure exactly how the awards translate, but he did very well indeed, and I think this was his very first show, too. You can see him in action on the judging table

here.

Unlike CFA, when you win a Best in Show you get not only a rosette but also prizes – usually food and cat accessories.

Here is Joop and all his winnings. That trophy is bigger than he is!

And if you are wondering why we didn’t take Zak along with Rory to the show this past weekend, well, that’s because while he is registered in FIFe, he is registered as a Polish cat, not a Swedish cat. He needs to have his details entered into Sverak‘s database as my cat before I can enter him. So as soon as that happens…we’ll see if he can do as well as his littermate!

Aby-a-Day – 30 June: “A lady never gets her own eggroll. A lady never gets her own anything!” (Cat Show Saturday)

Today was Lorelai’s very first cat show in Forshaga, just north of Karlstad, in Värmlands Län.

When we got to the benching area and looked at the catalogue, we got two surprises…One, there was a little ruddy girl who was born the exact same day as Rory!

samedayVäkIMG_3838

Her full name is SE*Cat Claw’s Master-Class (I don’t know what her nickname is), and apart from the fact that she looks more like Jacoby, the rest of her was just like Rory.

samedayVäkIMG_3839

She really wanted me to open the cage door and play with her.

samedayVäkIMG_3841

“Oooh, shiny!”

halfbroVäkIMG_3837

But the other surprise was even bigger: Rory has a half brother! SE*Cat Claw’s Lord of Light’s father is the same as Rory’s: Norwegian-born Tejas Glenn! Her brother is a handsome fellow, isn’t he? He reminds me a bit of Alfred.

roryVäkjudgingIMG_3851

So how did Rory do? Well, turns out our judge, Marie Westerlund, bred Abys, and she absolutely fell in love with our girl.

roryVäkjudgingIMG_3850

And Rory played on the table like a champ.

roryVäknomIMG_3852

End result? She was nominated to the final panel! She didn’t get Best Kat. 4 Kitten in Show, though; a Russian Blue boy who is on track to be FIFe’s best kitten won the day. But, watching the judges, it looked close decision on the judges’ part, and it’s a very promising start. Let’s see how she does tomorrow.

Aby-a-Day – 7 June: Lorelai’s first professional photos

I got a delightful surprise today: Lorelai’s breeder, Eva, sent me the first professional photos she had taken of Rory and her littermates when they were 11 weeks old (and of course, that’s Rory front and center in the above photo).

The photos were done by Maria Westling and ArtPhoto, and they really capture Rory’s personality.

There was an event at our DjurMagazinet a couple of weeks ago, and I took everyone to have photos done. It was especially important to get professional photos of Alfred and Angel, since it’s much easier to get photos done at cat shows. Angel cannot be entered in a FIFe show, as cats missing parts aren’t allowed in shows, even as Household Pets. Not that Angel would like being shown at all. Freddy is FIFe-registered, and could be shown as a Abyssinian, of course, but his colour is so dark that he’d be laughed off the judging stand. He also has some barring on his front legs and his eyes are somewhat round. He’s a great Aby…he’s just not a show Aby. And that is okay.

There’ll be a post about that circus eventually (Björn had to work and Kalle was sick, so I had to wrangle all four cats on my own. Which was oh so much fun.

I wasn’t aware that Rory had done that before. She certainly didn’t act like she’d ever had profressional photos done!

She seems to have done wonderfully on this first go.

I love that she had these done! This was the week before we got her, and it’s so great to have pro photos from before we actually got her.

She seems to be a natural.

Pretty sure that’s her with the toy, though.

Aby-a-Day – 10 May: Alfred’s father

When we went to the cat show in Stockholm to collect Lorelai, we got a bit of a surprise.

snusC03370

One of the Abys entered in the show was none other than Alfred’s father, Snus!

snusC03363

It was great to see him again.

freddyC03172

But also, wow. Freddy looks SO much like his dad. Especially around the eyes.

Aby-a-Day – 26 April: The two holes in our house (Thursday Things)

Remember what you were doing in February? In February, we had a happy household with five cats.

Now, we only have three. It feels very empty. We will get another Aby soon…it was in the works before we knew Logan was even sick. And we do want to add another Singapura someday. They are so much fun to show!

pyretloganC01847

But that is all in the future. Right now, it’s just too hard to stop looking at the past.

Aby-a-Day – 6 April: Alfred’s father (Friday flashback)

This is the fourth installment of posts about Alfred’s family. I was lucky enough to get to meet both of his parents, all of his littermates, and some other relations as well. Today we meet Alfred’s father and his cousins. Last week’s post is here.

dadC08097

Freddy’s father is an absolutely stunning ruddy named SE*Maghreb’s Snusmumriken. Of course, his father’s awesome ruddiness is also part of the reason why Freddy is so dark for a black silver Aby.

dadC07989

He is also a poser, like Jacoby. He knows how handsome he is!

dadC08125

Snus is also super friendly, which has definitely rubbed off on our Freddy.

dadcousinC07979

He’s also brilliant with kittens. Which is lovely; not all tomcats are.

dadcousinC08024

dadcousinC08030

Especially when the kittens aren’t theirs! These cute sorrel babies are actually Snus’ sister’s kits.

dadcousinC08139

It reminded me a bit of watching lion cubs play with the big male lion.

cousinsC08223

cousinsC08224

Those cousins were pretty adorable, too. Either playing alone…

cousinsC08217

(Hey! Be careful!)

cousinsC08243

…or together.

cousinsC07973

The cousins were also supremely adept at posing, just like their father.

…Well. Mostly.

But it was so much fun and such a special opportunity to meet so many members of Freddy’s family! Not often you get the chance to do that.
