Aby-a-Day – December 31: When the clock strikes 13 (Hipstamatic Monday)

Well, here it is: New Year’s Eve.

hipstajakenewyearsIMG_0028

Interestingly enough, it was Jacoby, not Angel, who was on the ledge in front of the TV as we got closer to midnight.

hipstajakenewyearsIMG_0030

He seemed unimpressed with Carson Daly’s rockin’ New Year’s Eve.

hipstajakenewyearsIMG_0032

In fact, he was really sleepy.

hipstajakenewyearsIMG_0034

He could barely keep his eyes open!

hipstajakenewyearsIMG_0036

With two minutes to go, Jake was actually dozing sitting up.

hipstajakeangelnewyearsIMG_0039

And then, a New Year’s miracle occurred: Angel joined Jake and he gave her kisses!

hipstajakeangelnewyearsIMG_0040

hipsta-angelnewyearsIMG_0041

Apparently, she was just waiting for the countdown.

hipsta-angelnewyearsIMG_0042

And, of course, for the ball to start dropping.

hipsta-angelnewyearsIMG_0043

Happy 2013, everyone!!!
(And no, I’m not telling who I kissed first at midnight!)

Aby-a-Day – December 30: I like to Roomba, Roomba, Roomba

Every year, the house gets a Christmas present. This year, it was so large it needed to be wrapped in two of those giant blue bags you get from IKEA!

jakeroombaE_1814

jakeroombaE_1816

Jacoby was very interested in this mysterious package!

jakeroombaE_1826

He was also a little miffed when we didn’t open it right away so he could see what was inside.

jakeroombaE_1823

“HEY!!! Will someone unwrap this, please!? I’m dyin’ over here!”

jakeroombaE_2037

And look what it was! An iRobot Pet Series 562 Roomba!

jakeroombaE_2040

jakeroombaE_2041

Jake was, if anything, more interested in this new machine out of the box than he was when it was still boxed up!

jakeroombaE_2045

He examined it thoroughly, as only an Aby can.

jakeroombaE_2050

He gave it far more than the third degree (There is a fifth degree, beyond that which is known to man…you’ve just crossed over into The Aby Zone).

jakeroombaE_2052

He practically did handstands trying to look at the Roomba’s undercarriage!

jakeroombaIMG_2063

However, when the Roomba was fully charged and started doing its job, Jake wasn’t quite as fearless as he usually is.

jakeroombaIMG_2064

In general, I’ve found that Abys aren’t typically afraid of vacuum cleaners; they seem less intimidated by them than the other cats are. Even Angel holds her ground against a running vacuum.

jakeroombaIMG_2065

It must be the fact that it is self-propelling, rather than being moved by a human.

jakeroombaIMG_2066

The way it swept around the kitchen seemed to unnerve Jake somewhat…and Jake is not a cat who unnerves easily. It was interesting to watch.

jakeroombaIMG_2067

jakeroombaIMG_2070

And now, the $64,000 question, which I know you’re all dying to know: “Did Jake ride the Roomba?”

jakeroombaIMG_2074

And, sadly, while there are cats who love riding Roombas, Jake does not seem to want to be one of those cats.

jakeroombaIMG_2075

(And, yes, I was a little disappointed…I had high hopes of a “Jake and the Roomba” video, if I am to be completely honest.)

jakeroombaIMG_2076

Finally, Jake decided the safest place to watch the Roomba was up off the floor where it couldn’t get him.

jakeroombaIMG_2077

I guess it’ll take some getting used to. This should be interesting!

Aby-a-Day – December 29: Meeting the welders

Jacoby and I took a walk to the Post Office on Christmas Eve for a final mail check, and on the way we stopped to take a few photos to use for the illustrations for my “Romeo & Jacoby” story (which, yes, I know I need to finish)…

jakestrollerweldersE_1735

…and we got to actually meet the welders! They happened to be just leaving as we were there, and we started taking. “They” are Brad and Jason, his son. I also got to meet Jason’s daughters, Natalie and Gwendolyn. Brad was kind enough to let me inside the gate to take photos, and he told me the real names of some of the cats: Mama Cat is Fuzzy, the torbie I call Ginger is named Baby, and the longhair black kitten twins are Booger (the boy) and Boogie (the girl).

welderscatE_1723

I think this is the boy, Booger.

welderscatE_1727

welderscatE_1717

And this, I think, is his sister, Boogie. Both of them are huge, glossy, healthy cats…I remember them from when they were kittens.

welderscatE_1720

Here’s Baby, aka Ginger. She is super skittish. When I came in, she ran away. This is the closest I could get to her.

welderscatE_1721

She’s such a gorgeous cat. It was so cool to go inside the gate and see all the little cat beds and hidey-holes that Brad has built for the cats that you can’t see from the outside. And I got a lot of good background photos for the story’s illustrations. That’s one of my New Year’s resolutions, to work on the Romeo & Jacoby story…and I have plenty of illustrations to work on now!

jakestrollerweldersE_1736

Jake didn’t get to go inside the gate with me, of course; he waited in his stroller while I took all the photos. And we didn’t see his friend Romeo this time, either…but it was amazing to go inside the cats’ territory and see them up close.

Aby-a-Day – December 28: Fishing on the Fishtail (Fashion Friday)

One of Jacoby’s Christmas presents this year was the marvellous United Bamboo Cat Club Fishtail Parka that I was lucky enough to buy for him during their flash parka sale a couple of weeks ago.

jakeubambooE_1587

jakeubambooE_1945

jakeubambooE_1926

The workmanship on this little coat is just breathtaking.

ubambooE_1626

ubambooE_1624

ubambooE_1619

There are a lot of human coats that don’t have this kind of attention to detail.

ubambooE_1616

The thick, soft, black boa lining is attached with tiny, hand-sewn buttons and can be removed for warmer weather.

ubambooE_1623

The natural raccoon fur ruff on the hood is also detachable with the same tiny buttons.

ubambooE_1622

The drawstring toggles on the “fishtail” and the waist are real, heavy-gauge polished cowhide.

ubambooE_1620

The zipper and the snaps are heavy duty and solidly attached. The pockets aren’t real (they’re just flaps), but that’s the only thing about this coat that isn’t genuine.

ubambooE_1621

The sleeve cuffs even have velcro closures.

jakeubambooE_1597

The fishtail hem of the coat fits nicely with Jake’s tail.

jakeubambooE_1594

As usual, Jake knows full well how great he looks wearing his new parka!

jakeubambooE_1598

And it fits him perfectly, too. I was afraid that it would be too small…Jake’s a big boy and I was worried it would be too tight in the shoulders and chest. But it’s just right.

jakeubambooE_1605

jakeubambooE_1610

He’s such a natural model for this coat, don’t you think?

jakeubambooE_1950

jakeubambooE_1933

I hope we get another invitation to United Bamboo’s calendar photoshoot next year…and I hope that, this time, we can make it to NYC!

Aby-a-Day – December 27: “Rip it open in a second and it’s time to play”

Christmas, as Garrett Morris might have said, was Berry Berry Good for the cats this year.

jakexmasE_1811

You can see how satisfied Jacoby looks as he surveys the spoils.

tessiexmasE_1838

Tessie got, among other things, two refurbished Kittenator Neko Flies toys. She’d torn all the original fur off of them, so I re-furred them for her.

tessiexmasE_1836

She prefers her Kittenators off the rod.

kyliexmasE_1857

Kylie was just overwhelmed by all the goodies.

tessietreatgametoyE_1859

One of the toys the cats got was a nifty little treat puzzle toy from, of all places, Target. Tessie was the first to check it out.

tessietreatgametoyE_1862

She got bored with it pretty quickly, though. She didn’t even eat the treats!

jaketreatgametoyE_1882

Guess who didn’t get bored with the new toy?

jaketreatgametoyE_1876

Jake quickly sussed out what the point of the toy was and got to work.

jaketreatgametoyE_1878

Nom, nom, nom…

jakehelicopterE_1956

My husband got a remote-controlled helicopter as one of his gifts. Jake shared it with him.

jakehelicopterE_1954

Or he tried to share it, anyway…

jake-elfhatE_1957

Jake also got a fabulous Buddy the Elf cat hat from Etsy’s ScooterKnits. This is the same person who made Jake’s mistletoe hat and his pom-pom hat.

jake-elfhatE_1966

Like his other hats, Jake modeled his new elf hat proudly. “Buddy the Elf, what’s your favourite colour?”

angelelfhatE_1986

Angel got an elf hat, too. Hers is a replica of Jovie’s elf hat.

angelelfhatE_1969

Angel, however, did not model her hat as proudly as Jake did his.

angelxmastoysE_1869

She much preferred her other gifts. She got a collection of toys…

angelmatE_1873

…and a new catnip mat.

abys+elfhatsE_1867

I got an awesome present, too – two plush Abyssinians from Japan! They’re roughly life-sized and oh, so soft. They’re called 癒しねこは、本物そっくりのかわいい猫のぬいぐるみです(アビシニアン), which, according to Google, translates roughly as “Healing lifelike cat”…Proving once again that all the best Abyssinian things seem to come from Japan.

abys+elfhatsE_1865

One has open eyes and one is sleeping. They both have fabulous detail, including little black paw pads. They were also quite happy to wear Jake and Angel’s elf hats!

jakewhitechristmasE_1833

Although snow was predicted for Christmas Day, we did not get any significant snow here in Boston. This was closest Jake got to having a White Christmas…

Aby-a-Day – December 25: …And an Aby in a fake tree! (Cartoon Tuesday)

I can’t ever think of Christmas trees without remembering Gun-Hee running up the tree – repeatedly – on his first Christmas. Once he figured out how to do it the first time, there was no keeping him down on the floor!

Festivus for the rest of us!

Merry Christmas, Joyous Solstice, Ah Freilichen Chanukah, Kwanzaa
Yenu Iwe Na Heri, Good Yule, 즐거운 동지 and Festivus for the rest of us – whatever you celebrate, I want to wish a Happy Holiday to all my readers from Jacoby, Angel, and myself. Thank you for helping to make this blog what it is. Without you we are just pictures of cats on the internet.

Aby-a-Day – December 24: Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse…because, you know what, the cats took care of them (Hipstamatic Monday)

So. It’s the night before Christmas. Time for some corny self-portraits using Incredibooth’s Holidaze booth. Wearing Santa hats, of course.

I Want an Abyssinian for Christmas

A few years ago, I finally managed filk Gayla Peevy’s 1953 novelty hit “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”, and I thought I’d repost it again this year:

I want an Abyssinian for Christmas
Only an Abyssinian will do
Don’t want a doll, no dinky Tinker Toy
I want a Abyssinian to play with and enjoy

I want an Abyssinian for Christmas
I don’t think Santa Claus will mind, do you?
He won’t have to use our dirty chimney flue
Just bring him through the front door, that’s the easiest thing to do

I can see me now on Christmas morning, creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and what surprise when I open up my eyes
To see an Aby baby curled there

I want a Abyssinian for Christmas
Only a Abyssinian will do
No wild Bengals or silly Siameses
I only like Abyssinineses
And Abyssinineses like me too!

People say an Aby would tear apart my house,
I’m sure with proper training he’ll be quiet as a mouse!

There’s lots of room for him to play and jump and fight…
I’ll feed him and I’ll love him and I’ll never sleep at night!
I can see me now on Christmas morning, creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and what surprise when I open up my eyes
To see my Aby kitten waiting there

I want an Abyssinian for Christmas
Only an Abyssinian will do
No Devon Rexes, no Himalayans
I only like Abyssiniayans
And Abyssiniayans like me too!

gunhee-tree809

I also have an alternate or additional verse, for that second part:

Husband says an Aby would wreck the furniture
But only if he’s bored – he’s such a busy lil’ creature!

There’s lots of room for him in our two bedroom place
I’d feed him there and groom him there and kiss his pretty face
I can see me now on Christmas morning, creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and what surprise when I open up my eyes
To see my Aby kitten waiting there

Aby-a-Day – December 23: A Christmas Miracle

So I was sitting on the sofa, and I looked down and saw…

angeltessieIMG_9804

…this. And I was just…

angeltessieIMG_9803

…what? Because, as you know, this never happens.

kyliexmasIMG_9813

Except at Christmas, I guess.

Aby-a-Day – December 22: Beware of the leopard

Angel really loves the television.

angelleopardIMG_9787

I was watching a really great show about leopards on PBS the other day and Angel really got into it.

angelleopardIMG_9788

angelleopardIMG_9789

I mean, she really got into it.

angelleopardIMG_9790

She’s such a funny little cat. She just loves the television. She likes to sleep in front of it, she likes to hide behind it, and she likes to watch it. When she’s in the bedroom eating, she prefers to be in there with the television on, and meows, loudly, if it’s turned off.

angelleopardIMG_9791

I know part of her fondness for the large TV is the fact that it is very, very warm, but it doesn’t explain why she is so fascinated by the images on the screen. All the cats like the warmth of the television, but only Angel tries to interact with it.

angelleopardIMG_9792

A woman at a cat show this summer thought that maybe because Angel only has the one eye and her depth perception is compromised, she doesn’t realise that the things she sees on TV aren’t three-dimensional. Maybe they look more real to her than they do to the other, two-eyed, cats.

Aby-a-Day – December 21: Gun-Hee and Christmas (Friday Flashback)

I can’t think about Christmas without thinking about Gun-Hee.

gunhee-pat509

He was my Christmas kitten. We picked him up from Sherry on December 15. By December 16, he was a member of the family.

gunhee-everyone652

He fit right in with Patrick, Tessie and Kylie.

gunhee-tree796

But the thing I remember most about Gun-Hee and Christmas is his climbing the tree.

gunhee-tree814

Such an epic accomplishment for such a little kitten!

gunhee-tree818

That was a 7-foot tree, and he went right up to the top of it. Several times. We’d get him down and he’d zoom right back up.

gunhee-tree797

He was so proud of himself.

gunhee-xmas740

He was so little, too! He was nearly the same size as his little Balinese cuddle-buddy!

gunhee-xmas757

Gun-Hee was truly the best Christmas present I’ve ever had.

Abys in Need: Zippy in DC Metro

Zippy wants a new home for Christmas!

zippy

“Zippy is a purebred, spayed female Abyssinian. She is about 7-8 years old by her vet records. We will bring her up to date on all vaccinations. Photo is attached. We did a senior bloodwork panel which revealed hyperthyroidism. Chem/CBC was normal. T4 was 4.2, with 4.0 being high normal. Prior records from the vet stated that she is on Atopica for “history of immune-mediated dermatitis” but we have no skin biopsy in her file. Overall she is healthy, a bit overweight, and she does have mild scabbing on her ears from the dermatitis. However, the owner stated she didn’t give her the Atopica often. She is really a beautiful cat, but typically a cat with hyperthyroidism will get overlooked by adopters here so we were hoping to find a spot in a rescue.”

Or, better yet, a forever home!

Aby-a-Day – December 20: Executive assistant

A couple of months ago, I had to work from home for several weeks while our new office was being renovated.

jakeworkIMG_8875

Needless to say, I had a lot of help.

jakeworkIMG_8874

I think Jacoby was absolutely thrilled I stayed home all day…even if he did have to share me with the computer.

jakeworkIMG_8879

He was always right there at my side, helping. He especially liked it when I needed to print something.

jakeworkIMG_8878

“PC LOAD LETTER? What the heck does that mean?”

Aby-a-Day – December 17: Festive (Hipstamatic Monday)

I got the cats this festive holiday collar at Petco the last time we were there.

hipsta-angel06

It’s sort of like a jester’s neck ruffle, with sparkle balls.

hipsta-angel10

I tried it out on all the cats, but somehow it looked best on Angel.

hipsta-angel17

She wasn’t entirely sure what to make of it…

hipsta-angel15

But she did know two things:

hipsta-angel19

One: she looks super cute with it on, and…

hipsta-angel11

Two: those are little cat toys on the ends of the collar!

Aby-a-Day – December 16: Dude, where’s my bed?

You may recall seeing photos of the IKEA Pax wardrobe we have in our bedroom.

jake-paxN9760

Mainly in the context of Jacoby climbing it.

jakeonhighE0011

Well, up until recently we had a fishtank on a shelf of that cabinet, and a basket with clothes underneath. When we moved the aquarium, we put a cat bed in the open space.

jakefootN9395

And the basket, especially, was a favourite hide-out and napping-spot of Jake’s.

ikeaE_1414

Recently, however, we finished that cabinet and installed a set of drawers in the open middle section.

jakeikeaE_1410

jakeikeaE_1416

Jake was MOST DISPLEASED to discover his napping spot had disappeared.

jakeikeaE_1422

“Wait…WHAT?”

jakeikeaE_1423

“I could have SWORN it was JUST here!”

jakeikeaE_1419

“Maybe it’s temporary…I’ll just wait and maybe it’ll come back.”

jakeikeaE_1411

“I wonder if I can get inside one of those…”

Aby-a-Day – December 15: He sees you when you go up to your brother and do whappy-paws for no reason…

Remember last week, when Jacoby was posing with his cousin from Japan?

jaketsumineko-abyE_1439

Well, while I was taking photos, Angel came up out of the blue, hissed at Jake, and then just hauled off and whapped him!

jakeangeltsumineko-abyEIMG_1434

He was so surprised! She’s been doing that to him a lot, lately. I wonder if she likes coal?
